ISSUES OF HUMAN HEALTH FOR OWNING A PET – (12-19-05)

May 25, 2012 by James Bogash

Pet ownership and human health: a brief review of evidence and issues

Being the owner of just short of a kennel (5 canines) this article really hit home. While there are no hard findings on pet ownership and mortality risk, any pet owner could tell you that their animals are good for them.

Most people light up as they talk about their pets, and when Rover snuggles up next to you just prior to taking up the entire bed, I’m sure that stress hormone levels plummet in the bloodstream.

LIFESTYLE IS AN IMPORTANT DETERMINANT OF THE ESTROGEN RATIO – (02-21-05)

May 13, 2012 by James Bogash

Urinary Estrogen Metabolites and their ratio among Asian American Women

Recall that our bodies (yes–women AND men) breakdown estrogen to get it out of the system.  This process can follow several pathways.  The “2″ pathway is generally considered protective.  The “16″ pathway is generally considered damaging to the genes, and the “4″ pathway is akin to lighting a stick of C4 and lying it directly on your good ‘ole double helix.

Luckily, the body has a mechanism to instantly get rid of the “4″ estrogen metabolite (which is subseptable to genetic variation along the COMT pathway), and the ratio between 2 and 16 is amenable to diet.  We know that compounds like cruciferous veggies contain indole-3-carbinol which gets converted to di-indolylemethane with the help of stomach acid.  This DIM goes on to make sure estrogen heads towards the 2, more friendly pathway.

This study confirms that lifestyle is an important determinant of this ratio.

BALANCE OF VISCERAL VS SUBCUTANEOUS FAT – (04-04-05)

May 8, 2012 by James Bogash

Differential Responses of Visceral and Subcutaneous Fat Depots to Nutrients

Wow.  What an insightful approach.  Basically, visceral (bad) and subcutaneous fat have a different response in the level of release of hormones after a glucose load.  The hormones derived from adipose tissue (resistin, leptin, adinopectin, PAI-1) generally contribute to insulin resistance and obesity.  More is released by visceral fat after feeding.

So the authors have planted a seed–might checking blood levels in non-fasting states give us more insight into the balance of visceral vs subcutaneous fat?  Interesting, huh?

RISK OF CVD BY HYSTERECTOMY STATUS – (05-01-05)

May 6, 2012 by James Bogash

Risk of CVD by Hysterectomy Status, With and Without Oophorectomy

This exemplifies what I have a problem with–many times women have hormonal dysfunctions that lead to gynecological problems.  These problems could be caused by estrogen dominance, insulin resistance, increased inflammation via poor dietary supply of omega 3 fatty acids…

But these women undergo hysterectomies without ever fully evaluating what the actual cause of the problem was!  Quite frustrating considering that whatever the imbalance, it is allowed to reign unchecked after one of the body’s smoke detectors (the problem leading up to the hysterectomy) is plucked out.

RISK OF OVULATORY INFERTILITY – (08-13-07)

April 14, 2012 by James Bogash

Dietary fatty acid intakes and the risk of ovulatory infertility.

Concerns of infertility, both male and female, are definitely becoming more commonplace. There is obviously a reason for this reduction in fertility; Mother Nature would not shut down the “reason to be” unless there was a darn good reason. Enter mainstream medicine, seemingly oblivious to Mother Nature’s plan, who proceeds to force fertility on a body that’s not ready for it. I remember a patient that was excited about seeing a fertility “specialist” a year or so ago.

She had done her research and she felt he was going to find out WHY she was not getting pregnant. He ran a single serum hormone test (salivary profile taken over a month is arguably one of the best ways to evaluate what the hormones are doing) and determined that she needed hormone shots!! Some “specialist”!!! No talk about celiac disease, thyroid problems, diet, heavy metal exposure… I guess that the sad part is that this is ALL I’ve ever heard about “specialists.” The use of assisted reproductive technologies is damaging the health of our society, increasing the rate of preterm babies and babies born with higher lifetime chances of developing diabetes, heart disease and obesity.

ROLE OF INFLAMMATION THAT PLAYS IN BONE LOSS – (03-05-07)

April 5, 2012 by James Bogash

Follicle-stimulating hormone stimulates TNF production from immune cells to enhance osteoblast and osteoblast  formation

While this was a mouse study, it does have some potentially important implications. First, it further confirms the role that inflammation plays in bone loss. Basically, the more inflammation present, the more cells that are produced to break down bone (osteoclasts) and thus greater bone loss.

The marker of inflammation, TNF-alpha, was increased by FSH, a hormone that will increase around peri-menopause as the body tries to jump-start the ovaries to release an egg. Next implications, ascorbic acid was found to prevent this increase in osteoclasts in the presence of elevated TNF alpha.

ITS SHOCKING THAT PREGNANCY INCREASES RISK OF BREAST CANCER – (01-21-08)

March 23, 2012 by James Bogash

Heightened Risk of Breast Cancer Following Pregnancy: Could Lasting Systemic Immune Alterations Contribute?

This one gets a little deep. Many realize that pregnancy lowers your risk of developing breast cancer. What many do not know is that this is long term risk–in the short term the risk is actually elevated. So why the discrepancy? I have heard the theory proposed that the high levels of progesterone in pregnancy actually increase the risk of terminal duct lobular carcinoma of the breast, but lower the risk of interlobular ductal breast cancer.

This article is suggesting a different (or complimentary) theory. We know that pregnancy induces a change in immune status towards a Th2 dominated state. With a Th2 immune profile, the body is less likely to look inside for something to attack (like the developing fetus). However, we use this system for cancer surveillance. This may indicate that a Th2 state during pregnancy would leave cancer cells to divide unchecked by the immune system, leading to increased rates of cancer.

ARE YOU AWARE THAT ADRENALS BURN THROUGH VITAMIN C UNDER STRESS? – (01-26-08)

March 21, 2012 by James Bogash

Human adrenal glands secrete vitamin C in response to adrenocorticotrophic hormone

I have to admit, this one caused me to slow down and do a double take. It is well known that adrenals burn through Vit C under stress. I had always just assumed that this meant that Vit C was being used as a cofactor for some enzymatic process.

However, this study finds that, when the adrenals are stimulated via ACTH, they actually release high levels of Vit C for a short burst of time, presumably to assist in stress-related adaptations elsewhere in the body. This is a known mechanism in other mammals (humans are one of 4 mammals no longer able to make their own Vit C in the liver) that is used to combat stress, but I had never heard of any comparable process in humans. Maybe we just did.
