RISK OF POSTMENOPAUSAL BREAST CANCER – (08-17-09)

February 13, 2012 by James Bogash

Urinary Melatonin Levels and Postmenopausal Breast Cancer Risk

Hate to sound like a broken record, but if ANYONE out there thinks that cancer risk is in our genes and we have no control over it….that absolutely, positively, without a doubt flies in the face of hundreds of studies confirming a large degree of control over our risk of cancer and the outcomes of cancer diagnosis.

In this particular study, we found higher levels of melatonin (a hormone produces deep in the brain to help settle us into sleep when the sun goes down) led to a 38% reduced risk of breast cancer. That means that good daylight sun exposure and getting your body to sleep WITHOUT the use of drugs, as well as NOT working a graveyard shift can all help avoid breast cancer.

BREAST CANCER INCIDENCE AFTER HORMONAL INFERTILITY TREATMENT – (08-17-09)

February 13, 2012 by James Bogash

Breast cancer incidence after hormonal infertility treatment in Sweden

Regular readers of updates know how strongly I am against infertility treatment in all but a few cases. Almost all cases of infertility can be managed with aggressive, safe lifestyle changes. If a couple (yes–you men are to blame as well because YOUR health plays a role in fertility as well) is NOT willing to make the hard decisions to clean up their lifestyles to have a healthy child the way Mother Nature intended, maybe, just maybe…they’re not ready.

Hard statements, but looking at the health risks these babies have (prematurity, increased rates of CVD and diabetes….) it needs to be said. Now, if that wasn’t bad enough, we see some pretty massive increases in the rates of breast cancer in these women treated with clomid to force fertility. Breast cancer is already likely in this group, since being pre-diabetic is a strong cause of infertility. Use of fertility agents led to a double or tripling of the risk for breast cancer.

EFFECTS OF LIPID BIOACCESSIBILITY, APPETITE AND HORMONE RESPONSE

Mastication of almonds: effects of lipid bioaccessibility, appetite, and hormone response

Gosh I love this one.  Can you imagine a room full of researchers just watching people chew??  But seriously, the implications of this one are huge.  The mere act of chewing more, no change in the food or quantity you’re eating, increases the production of GLP-1, which is one of the newest and greatest diabetic drugs out (Byetta–the hila monster spit drug…).  They stayed fuller longer and had better serum lipid responses.  Talk about a very, very simple adjunct to everything else!

IS THAT NIGHT LIGHT KILLING YOU?

January 30, 2012 by James Bogash

IS THAT NIGHT LIGHT KILLING YOU?  We’ve known for some time that shift works are at higher risks of certain types of cancer, and that “light maps” of the US show correlations with breast cancer is the more highly lit regions of the country.

This study starts to shed some light on potential mechanisms.  Many have postulated that the hormone melatonin, which is known to have very strong antioxidant properties, may be at work.

This study, however, looked at the effect of one hour of night time light exposure on mice’s cell division and found that normal cell division was affected.  By no means is this the end of the story, but it adds further concern to those who work graveyards or stay up into the wee hours of the night reading my FB posts…
