It’s nice to see clinical studies on more realistic levels of nutrients (Vit C at 1000 mg and Vit E at 800 IU). Chalk this one up in the “benefits and vitamin C” column along with the several thousand others (as opposed to the lonely “harmful effects of vitamin C” column with only a handful…).

PYLORI INCREASE PERMEABILITY TO FOOD ANTIGEN IN GASTRIC BIOPSY – (03-15-04)

This is interesting if you follow the physiology. I strongly believe that H. pylori is an opportunistic infection possibly related to lowered vit C status or lack of protective flora. So here we have an opportunistic infection related to poor health status leading to an increase in the antigenic effects from food allergies. And food allergies can have many negative impacts on health. So, if you think antibiotic resistance is the only problem to be worried about with antibiotic overuse–follow the physiology.

HIGH DOSE OF VITAMIN MAY INCREASE AND CAUSE MORTALITY – (12-09-04)

HIGH-DOSAGE VITAMIN E SUPPLEMENTATION MAY INCREASE ALL-CAUSE MORTALITY

My, wasn’t this one a hot one for a day or so? This always brings up the question about how some of these articles manage to make it to the mainstream media when other topics much more important (like Syndrome X) remain unheard of. A couple comments. First, the end results from the study were very weakly positive. 1.04 X risk. 1.00 risk means no effect, so a .04 increase in risk is very small.

Also, the “p” value is .035–this is an evaluation of how much the study results are a result of chance (p value of coin flip is 1). The lower the number the stronger the study. I prefer p values lower than .001. That being said, there’s still the possiblity of a risk, which is NOTHING NEW. I’ve included a strong article that reviews the pro-oxidant effects of Vit E. Vit E can act as a pro-oxidant but THIS IS ABOLISHED BY CO-ANTIOXIDANTS LIKE VIT C. From a natural perspective, we don’t treat supplements in a vacuum and lifestyle changes would ALWAYS be done in a package, not with just one supplement. I’m sure that taking Vit E along with Vit C and other compounds like green tea and red wine will show nothing but a strongly protective effect.

HEALTH EFFECTS OF ANTIOXIDANT VITAMINS AND MINERALS – (12-09-04)

A RCT OF THE HEALTH EFFECTS OF ANTIOXIDANT VITAMINS AND MINERALS

This was a relatively simple approach to affecting long term health and at least is a little more representative of a natural approach (low doses of Vit C, E, selenium, beta carotene and zinc).

This study found a very strong protective effect in men for any cause of death. This protective effect was not found in women, however. The authors suggest a reduced levels of pre-trial antioxidant status in men to explain the difference. I might add another angle–most of the women in this study were pre-menopausal. These women would generally have less iron due to loss of blood during the menstrual cycle. Iron has the capacity to be a pro-oxidant in higher levels. This may be a factor that contributed to the differences. It would be easy to check–just stratify the group into pre- and post-menopausal women. Regardless, this is a very, very cheap and simple protective mechanism for preventing chronic disease.

REACTIVE OXYGEN SPECIES ASSOCIATED WITH DIABETIC DAMAGES – (02-17-03)

Are Oxidative Stress-Activated Signaling Pathways Mediators of Insulin Resistance and ß-Cell Dysfunction?

This article finds that reactive oxygen species (i.e. free radicals) are a result of elevated glucose levels, and these ROS than damage DNA, proteins and lipids. This damage than starts a snowball effect killing off beta cells of the pancreas and leading to the damage we associate with diabetes. This would suggest that antioxidant supplementation (N-acetylcysteine, Vit E, Vit C, CoQ10…) would be important nutrients for any patient with impaired glucose tolerance or diabetes.

BLOOD PRESSURE DAMAGES CELL LYING IN ARTERIES – (09-24-03)

High Pressure Induces Superoxide Production in Isolated Arteries

Wow! This article suggests that increased blood pressure alone is enough to start a cascade of damage in the cells lining the arteries. Increased super-oxide without ample antioxidants to quench this free radical will result in further damage to the cell. This damage can begin the infiltration of white blood cells that begin plaque formation. This lends more support to the idea of antioxidant supplementation such as Vit C, E and CoQ10 to lower risk of CVD.

SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT EFFECTS THE HEALTH CONDITIONS – (08-28-06)

Clinical outcome of patients with Helicobacter pylori infection: the bug, the host, or the environment?

See!! It’s not just my own rantings and ravings that suggest that it’s not H. pylori, but rather the patients’ poor environment that leads to problems. We know that more lactobaccillus in the stomach means less H. pylori.

We know that Vit C levels are lower in the gastric juices of the patient with H. pylori. We know that H. pylori likes a less acidic environment, which would be readily produced by someone under chronic stress. So, in my own little dream world future, any patient with H. pylori would be counseled on lifestyle changes rather then antibiotics ablation.

MECHANISM UNDERLYING OXIDATIVE STRESS – 05-01-05)

Mechanism underlying oxidative stress-mediated lipotoxicity

In a nutshell, the researchers in this study found that elevated triglycerides (as would be found in insulin resistance) get sucked up into the macrophages (a type of white blood cells), and once there, started to destroy the mitochondria of the cell resulting in cell death.  The death of a macrophage in the bloodstream can lead to the production of foam cells and subsequent plague in the arteries.

Interestingly, vit C, NAC and resveratrol protected the macrophages from this death.  So, to extrapolate into a living, breathing human, antioxidants protect the cells that produce plaquing in the arteries, resulting in less plaque.
