Ghrelin, Induces Hyperglycemia and Reduces Insulin Secretion in Humans – (11-01-01)

May 11, 2013 by James Bogash

Ghrelin, a Natural GH Secretagogue Produced by the Stomach, Induces Hyperglycemia and Reduces Insulin Secretion in Humans

This is more of an FYI. Keep an eye on this hormone. It is just now finding it’s way into the limelight and will most likely be a target of some new drugs coming down the pipeline. It is only a matter of time, however, before we find out how certain vitamins, minerals, herbs and foods affect ghrelin levels.

DHEA in Healthy Men with an Age-Related Decline of DHEA Secretion – (11-01-01)

DHEA in Healthy Men with an Age-Related Decline of DHEA Secretion

This is an interesting article that address the normal process of reduced DHEA secretion as we get older. Remember that DHEA is produced in the adrenal cortex from cholesterol and goes on to produce estrogen, testosterone and progesterone. In previous updates, I’ve mentioned that many people believe that the body deliberately down-regulates production of certain hormones as a protective mechanism to protect against age related changes. This study found no changes in healthy adult males after 4 months of DHEA supplementation. Personally, in patients with low DHEA levels I feel it would be safer to support the adrenal glands and let them do what they’re supposed to do.

HRT and Associated Risk of Stroke in Postmenopausal Women – (09-26-02)

HRT and Associated Risk of Stroke in Postmenopausal Women

Sorry…just felt the need to beat a dead bush (too much of an animal lover to beat a dead dog…). Still wondering why this stuff is even available, let alone prescribed…

Functional polymorphism in promoter of progesterone receptor gene associated with endometrial cancer risk – (09-26-02)

Functional polymorphism in promoter of progesterone receptor gene associated with endometrial cancer risk

Hate to beat up on today’s clinicians, but here we go again…the research is loaded with relationships between single gene nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and disease risk and tests to determine many of these SNPs are readily available, cheap and easy to do. And yet, I would guess that it will be well over 40 years (the magic number for clinicians to recognize and use the literature) before these tests are accepted by mainstream medicine. The wonderful thing about SNPs is that many of them identify unique requirements for nutrients, natural compounds and lifestyle changes that can reduce risk.

HRT and Incidence of Alzheimer Disease in Older Women – (11-07-02)

HRT and Incidence of Alzheimer Disease in Older Women

The sideline view of this whole debacle is very entertaining. We are now seeing a scramble to find a use for this multi-billion dollar gold mine. Lets see…lower your risk of Alzheimer’s only to die from breast or endometrial cancer or heart disease. If Alzheimer’s is a concern, how about boosting antioxidant intake (the ApoE4 genotype leads to increased risk unless balanced out with increased antioxidants), lowering aluminum exposure and balancing with increased zinc, ginko biloba use and checking for wheat allergy that can increase risk as well.

HRT worsens inflammation of the brain that could lead to Alzheimers – (11-21-02)

Long-Term ERT Worsens Behavioral, Neuropathological Consequences of Chronic Brain Inflammation

In English  this animal study shows that, contrary to what the pharmaceutical ants are trying to prove to find a use for the multi-billion dollar HRT industry, HRT may actually worsen inflammation of the brain that could lead to Alzheimers. Keep in mind that Mother Nature does things for a reason. Menopause included. The down regulation of hormone production in our later years may be a protective effect designed to guard us from decades of chemical and lifestyle abuses.

Treatment of multiple sclerosis with the pregnancy hormone estriol – (06-17-03)

Treatment of multiple sclerosis with the pregnancy hormone estriol

I’ll take this opportunity to freshen up on female hormones. The human produces three estrogens; estradiol, estrione and estriol. Estriol is generally considered the friendly hormone, and many regimens of natural HRT rely heavily upon estriol. In this study we see estriol as possibly being protective against MS. This study tried to figure out why MS symptoms seem to be reduced or in remission while a woman is pregnant (a condition where estiol levels are high) and found that estriol may be a factor.

Sex hormone binding globulin as prepubertal marker for hyperinsulinaemia – (01-10-02)

March 10, 2013 by James Bogash

Sex hormone binding globulin as prepubertal marker for hyperinsulinaemia

This is an interesting article that may give us some insight on preventing the startling rise in Syndrome X prevalence. Exactly what role SHBG plays is not yet known, but lower levels may increase free concentrations of hormones such as testosterone, and this hyperandrogenicity may be the real player. Either way, I feel that finding markers for those at risk so they can make lifestyle changes would be a moot point if everyone make healthier lifestyle choices…
