MS, Seizures, Migraines–Can Your Gut Protect Your Brain?

Anyone with a neurological condition, whether anxiety, depression, epilepsy, migraines or MS, will tell you that symptoms wax and wane.  But why?

While a common occurrence, it seems that few question why this is so.  It is considered more as just a course of the condition.  But what if the fluctuations of symptoms are not only explainable, but possibly controllable?

The blood brain barrier (BBB) is a layer of cells that basically separates your brain cells from the rest of your body.  Consider it like the Great Wall of China for your brain.  And there are very specific gates that restrict access to only what your brain needs.  Even immune cells cannot cross this barrier.  Luckily, the brain has its own set of immune cells (called the microglia) to fight off anything that threatens to attack the brain cells.

The BBB develops very early in the womb and, as a result, the immune system never really “sees” the cells that make up the central nervous system.  In other words, it’s a very sheltered, protected environment due to the presence of the BBB.  Or at least it would be if the BBB remain intact.

We know that in certain neurological conditions, like multiple sclerosis (MS), the BBB solidity fluctuates, sometimes doing what it is supposed to be doing and sometimes letting in chemicals, compounds and immune cells that the brain would be better off not being exposed to.  This leaky BBB has been linked to symptom flare ups in MS.

What if you could better control your blood brain barrier through lifestyle choices?  That’s exactly the question raised by this particular study.  In it, researchers looked at two groups of mice.  The first were born to mothers who were raised in sterile, germ-free environments.  In other words, this group of mice did not have the benefit of being exposed to bacteria from the womb on.  The second group was born to mothers who were raised with normal exposures to bacteria.

Here’s what happened:

  • The germ-free mice had a leaky BBB while the normal mice did not.
  • The leaky BBB started in the womb and continued through birth and during adulthood.
  • The mice with leaky BBB had reduced expression of proteins that protect the brain barrier (tight junction proteins occludin and claudin-5).
  • However, when the gut bacteria from the normal mice were put into the damaged BBB mice, the blood brain barrier stabilized and there was a higher production of tight junction proteins.

This is an animal study and done under controlled conditions, but given how much the gut bacteria have been shown to play a role in other neurological conditions, the results of this study are likely to fit in with what we already know.  The relationship between the bacteria in our gut and just about every aspect of health is literally exploding at an exponential rate.  It seems like every day we learn more about how it affects our health and risk of chronic disease.

Despite this, I have patients come in time and time and time again given drugs like antibiotics, steroids and NSAIDs that completely disrupt the delicate balance of the bacteria in the gut.  This remains a topic that mainstream medicine seems determine to remain oblivious to no matter how much research is published.

Multiple Sclerosis and Vitamin D

DON’T LIVE IN AZ OR FL?  ARE YOU OR YOUR CHILDREN AT RISK FOR MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS??

The likely answer is yes.  There is a clear delineation between those living at higher latitudes and the risk of MS, with Vit D being the key link.  And while Vit D likely plays an integral role in the onset of MS, it’s effect on treatment of MS is not that strong.  That means effecting the process before it starts.  So why doesn’t everyone in the frigid tundra of Chicago get MS?  The answer most likely lies in genetic uniquenesses.  This article looks at genetic uniquenesses (called “SNPs”) that may contribute to risk in the presence of lower Vit D levels.  Basically, if you have a disadvantaged SNP and you don’t have enough Vit D, your risk is much higher.  One of the SNPs (Vitamin D receptor, or VDR) is of concern.  These SNPs, despite common perception, ARE are to be checked with simple cheek swabs with certain companies.

Multiple Sclerosis is a disease that uses toxic drugs to keep the symptoms at bay. Unfortunately, many of the side effects of therapy are bad, and all the drugs seem to do is reduce the number of flare ups. I know several MS patients who went off their med entirely and made some strong lifestyle changes and are now healthier than ever.

Nutrition and diet in the clinical management of multiple sclerosis

This article is always a nice one to hopefully wake up some of those in the medical community that consider nutritional advice for those with autoimmune diseases to be pointless. MS is one of those diseases that can be managed well with strong lifestyle changes designed to lower overall inflammatory burden and also to stabilize the blood brain barrier. Interestingly, I remember an article awhile back that addressed the approach to stabilizing the blood brain barrier and found the recommendations very similar to changes I would recommend to improve someone’s overall health. Remember…taking care or yourself is taking care of yourself–no matter what disease you happen to have.

More Evidence Supports Infectious Cause of Childhood Leukemia

Here we see another example of the theory that many of today’s chronic diseases (in which I classify cancer…) have multiple etiologies. Infectious origins have been suggested for many diseases, including heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis. This study looks at the exposure of children in Scotland to servicemen during WWII and the subsequent increase in leukemia in this population. Leading a healthier lifestyle will lower your risk of many types of diseases as well as boost your immune system at the same time. Could it be that this boost in immune function is actually the route by which healthier lifestyles lower the risk of certain diseases?

Lancet 2001;357:858 UK investigators have documented a significant increase in childhood leukemia deaths in an isolated rural population exposed to servicemen stationed nearby during World War II. The findings support the theory, they say, that an infectious agent is responsible for childhood leukemia. Drs. Leo J. Kinlen and A. Balkwill, both of the University of Oxford, examined death registries for two complete cohorts from Orkney and Shetland, in Scotland. The first cohort consisted of all 8574 children up to age 14 living on those two islands in 1941, plus 3690 children born there between 1941 and 1945. The postwar cohort consisted of 6478 children born in Orkney and Shetland from 1946 to 1955. During the war, up to 60,000 servicemen were stationed on the two islands, with an additional 40,000 stationed aboard a ship near Orkney. Local residents numbered fewer than 45,000. The researchers documented a 3.6-fold increase in leukemia deaths in the wartime group, whereas in the postwar cohort, followed until 1970, there was no increased risk of leukemia compared with age-specific leukemia mortality rates for Scotland. Drs. Kinlen and Balkwill explain that there was a great deal of contact between local people and servicemen during wartime “through regular social events, servicemen buying local produce, and local people working for army camps.” In addition, they note, “outside populations consisted almost wholly of adults, which points to their relevance in the transmission of the infection underlying childhood leukemia.” “Childhood leukemia must be a rare response to the underlying infection,” they suggest, adding that the agent or agents involved have yet to be determined.

I’ll take this opportunity to freshen up on female hormones. The human produces three estrogens; estradiol, estrione and estriol. Estriol is generally considered the friendly hormone, and many regimens of natural HRT rely heavily upon estriol. In this study we see estriol as possibly being protective against MS. This study tried to figure out why MS symptoms seem to be reduced or in remission while a woman is pregnant (a condition where estiol levels are high) and found that estriol may be a factor.

Vitamin D intake and incidence of multiple sclerosis

Vitamin D formation in the human body is a complex and interesting process. Sunlight exposure on the skin converts a pro-hormone Vit D to it’s next form which is then converted in the kidneys and liver to the active form 1,25 hydroxyvitamin D3. This process is severely blunted in patients using sunscreen and obviously those staying out of the sun. Considering that every cell in the body has a receptor for 1,25 hydroxyvitamin D3, the effects on every aspect of our health cannot be understated. It has been well accepted that Vitamin D metabolism being reduced the farther you go from the equator is one of the risk factors for MS.

HEPATITIS B VACCINATION AND MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS- (10-13-04)

Study suggests hepatitis B vaccine increases risk of multiple sclerosis

If there is someone out there that can give me a rational explanation as to why we are vaccinating newborns just minutes out of the womb for a virus that is transmitted through IV drug use, direct blood exposure or unprotected sex, I would love to be enlightened. (I can understand if the mother is HBV positive) Supporters would probably say that, at least these infants will be protected for the rest of their lives against hepatitis B. Guess again, studies are proving that the hep B vaccination immunity barely lasts five years. Okay, the supporters would say…but at least the vaccine is totally safe….
