HRT Use Linked to Increased Risk of Asthma in Women – (11-23-00)

HRT Use Linked to Increased Risk of Asthma in Women

Okay, okay. Explain to me again why HRT is consistantly one of the most heavily prescribed pharmaceuticals?? I just don’t understand. And why did these results not end up all over the news media?

(article) Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is associated with an increased risk of adult-onset asthma but not chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), researches reported here at the annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians. Analysis of the data revealed that “current users of estrogen alone had an increased risk of asthma (RR 1.8) compared with never-users of HRT after adjustment for age and smoking,” and this risk increased with the dose and length of estrogen use. In addition, women who took estrogen and progestin and past users of HRT “had similarly elevated risks of asthma.” “This is a large increase in risk for developing asthma. However, the number of women who develop asthma in this age range is relatively small, particularly compared with those who develop heart disease or osteoporosis,” Dr. Barr told Reuters Health. Also, Dr. Barr pointed out, the analysis so far indicates that HRT is not associated with worsening of pre-existing asthma. Dr. Barr’s group also found that “current users of estrogen also were at increased risk of a new diagnosis of both asthma and COPD (RR 2.0) compared with never-users of HRT.” The risk of COPD alone was the same for HRT and non-HRT users, after adjusting for age and smoking, and there were no effects associated with dose or duration of HRT.

The Heart and Estrogen/Progestin Replacement Study Revisited – (11-12-00)

The Heart and Estrogen/Progestin Replacement Study Revisited

Yet another nail in the coffin of HRT. This commentary is a review of recent evidence suggesting that HRT may actually worsen heart disease. With all the evidence coming out against artificial HRT (there needs to be a differentiation between horse estrogens and natural, human estrogens) and effective natural alternatives, I truly cannot understand why any woman would consider putting this into her body.

Effects of Estrogen plus Progestin on Health-Related Quality of Life – (03-18-03)

Effects of Estrogen plus Progestin on Health-Related Quality of Life.

Sorry to be in the negative mode, but the subject of HRT is becoming so dead in the water that it is laughable. The drug companies are so desperately scrambling for a use for this multi billion dollar industry and keep striking out left and right. He we see no impact on sleep disturbance, physical functioning, and bodily pain. So..no benefits, but it does increase risk of gallstones, breast cancer, endometrial cancer and heart disease. Why the hell is this product still on the market? If this was a natural product it would’ve been yanked off the shelves faster than tryptophan in the eighties!!

Estrogen Replacement Therapy Does Not Reduce Alzheimer’s Risk – (05-03-01)

Estrogen Replacement Therapy Does Not Reduce Alzheimer’s Risk

Strike off yet another excuse for HRT. Want to lower your risk of Alzheimers? Identify and avoid food allergens, lower your overall inflammatory burden, maintain high intakes of fruits, vegetables and whole grains high in zinc and avoid as many sources of aluminum as you can.

Arch Neurol 2001;58:435-440 The use of estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) by postmenopausal women does not reduce their risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Dr. David A. Drachman, of the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, used the General Practice research Database in the UK, which includes prescription data, to identify 112,481 postmenopausal women who used ERT and an age-matched cohort of 108,925 women who had not used ERT. From these groups they conducted a nested case-control analysis of 59 women with newly diagnosed AD and 221 matched controls. “Among the 59 newly diagnosed cases of AD, 15 (25%) were current estrogen users, while among the controls, 53 (24%) were current users,” the investigators report. After adjustment for body mass index and smoking, the odds ratio for AD in women who had used estrogen for at least 1 year was 1.18 compared with nonusers. When the authors combined past ERT users with current users, the odds ratio compared with nonusers 1.19. For those who used estrogen for at least 5 years, the odds ratio was 1.05. “Odds ratios were similar for estrogen recipients who received estrogens alone and recipients who received combined estrogen-progestin treatment,” Dr. Drachman and colleagues note.

Younger Women on HRT May Be at Risk for Colon Polyp Recurrence – (05-03-01)

Younger Women on HRT May Be at Risk for Colon Polyp Recurrence

If there are so many potential negative effects of synthetic HRT, why is it still on the tip of most physician’s tongues when a woman approaches menopause? Every woman who is perimenopausal needs to evaluate why she would consider HRT and see if there are any natural, safer alternatives.

(article) Although estrogen has been shown to protect against colon polyp formation, National Cancer Institute (NCI) researchers said here on Tuesday that younger women on hormone replacement therapy may be at risk for developing new polyps after they have already had some removed. For unknown reasons, women under the age of 62 had an increased risk of recurrence, NCI scientist Dr. Karen Woodson said in presenting data from the institute’s Polyp Prevention Trial here at the 92nd annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer research

Oral Contraceptive Use and HRT Associated with Microalbuminuria – (09-10-01)

Oral Contraceptive Use and HRT Associated with Microalbuminuria

Many studies have linked impaired insulin sensitivity with microalbuminuria. Other studies have linked oral contraceptive use with worsening insulin sensitivity. This study sort of brings the two concepts together.

Nitroglycerin therapy vs Premarin in prevention of bone loss – (02-26-01)

Nitroglycerin therapy vs Premarin in prevention of bone loss

This study suggests that nitrogylcerin applied topically may be as effective as HRT for preventing post-oopherectomy (ovaries surgical removed) bone loss. Such an easy, safe therapy based opon nitric oxides’ effect on bone. Nitroglycerin as well as arginine are precursors to nitric oxide in the bloodstream. Arginine supplementation has also been shown to lower blood pressure, thereby reducing risk of heart disease. To top it all off, side effetcs of arginine are rare, and it is much, much cheaper than Premarin. Oh–and it doesn’t increase risk of breast and endometrial cancer…

Some HRT Regimens May Increase Risk of Postmenopausal Stroke – (01-08-01)

July 7, 2013 by James Bogash

Some HRT Regimens May Increase Risk of Postmenopausal Stroke

Okay, okay…so why would someone want to take HRT again?? I just cannot figure it out. Reasons for taking HRT are several. Lowering risk of heart disease is one of these reasons; and yet research may indeed be pointing to an INCREASED risk for CVD with HRT use. Prevention of osteoporosis is another reason; HRT does not fix osteoporosis, it just slows its progression. Osteoporosis starts decades earlier and does not suddenly start at menopause. Try less animal proteins, more fruits and veggies, soy products, high quality calcium supplements and exercise to reduce and maybe even reverse osteoporosis.

Ann Intern Med 2000;133:933-941,999-1001 Twenty years of prospective follow-up in the Nurses’ Health Study shows that daily estrogen doses of 0.625 mg or higher plus progestin may increase the risk of stroke by up to 45%. Dr. Grodstein’s group found that that the age-adjusted relative risk of a major coronary event was 0.54 for current users of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) compared with women who never used HRT. While they observed little overall difference in the relative risk of stroke among users and non-users of HRT, stroke risk varied by daily estrogen dose. Stroke risk was lower among women who received estrogen at 0.3 mg/d compared who those who took 0.625 or 1.25 mg/d. And among women taking 0.625 mg/d of estrogen combined with progestin, the authors observed a 45% higher risk of stroke compared with those who never took HRT. In an accompanying editorial, Drs. Deborah Grady and Stephen B. Hulley, of the University of California at San Francisco, sugg! est that “hormone therapy may have mixed effects, causing thrombotic events while improving the lipoprotein profile.” If that is the case, they speculate that prothrombotic activity may be more damaging to the small vessels of the cerebrovascular circulation than to the larger vessels of the coronary circulation.
