p53 Tumor Suppressor Down-Regulation by 17ß-Estradiol – (08-22-02)

p53 Tumor Suppressor Down-Regulation by 17ß-Estradiol

The evidence continues to mount for estrogen being a carcinogen. Here we start seeing the potential biochemical reasoning for this outcome. Remember, however, that estrogen (as produced by the body) is a naturally occurring substance and serves its purpose. I firmly believe that the body, in its wisdom, down-regulates production of certain hormones as we age as a protective mechanism. Evidence strongly supports this theory for estrogen and HRT.

Inflammatory Biomarkers, HRT, and Incident CHD – (09-12-02)

Inflammatory Biomarkers, HRT, and Incident CHD

I still continue to beat my head against the wall trying to figure out why any woman would use this stuff!! There have been no shortage of studies identifying adverse risk with HRT use (many of which HRT has been touted as benefiting for decades…). What’s even more surprising is how adamantly women talking HRT defend their use. Hot flashes and mood swings are the two most common reasons I hear. These can usually be managed very effectively with natural methods which include progesterone and some form of phytoestrogen.

HRT and Associated Risk of Stroke in Postmenopausal Women

Sorry…just felt the need to beat a dead bush (too much of an animal lover to beat a dead dog…). Still wondering why this stuff is even available, let alone prescribed…

HRT and Incidence of Alzheimer Disease in Older Women – (11-07-02)

HRT and Incidence of Alzheimer Disease in Older Women

The sideline view of this whole debacle is very entertaining. We are now seeing a scramble to find a use for this multi-billion dollar gold mine. Lets see…lower your risk of Alzheimer’s only to die from breast or endometrial cancer or heart disease. If Alzheimer’s is a concern, how about boosting antioxidant intake (the ApoE4 genotype leads to increased risk unless balanced out with increased antioxidants), lowering aluminum exposure and balancing with increased zinc, ginko biloba use and checking for wheat allergy that can increase risk as well.

HRT worsens inflammation of the brain that could lead to Alzheimers – (11-21-02)

Long-Term ERT Worsens Behavioral, Neuropathological Consequences of Chronic Brain Inflammation

In English  this animal study shows that, contrary to what the pharmaceutical ants are trying to prove to find a use for the multi-billion dollar HRT industry, HRT may actually worsen inflammation of the brain that could lead to Alzheimers. Keep in mind that Mother Nature does things for a reason. Menopause included. The down regulation of hormone production in our later years may be a protective effect designed to guard us from decades of chemical and lifestyle abuses.

HRT and Heart Disease – (11-05-01)

HRT and Heart Disease

Here’s another study not able to find a benefit of HRT on heart disease indices. Any women desiring to take HRT needs to fully evaluate what diseases she hopes to altered the path to. If lowering risk of heart disease is the reason then there are 20 other things this woman can do to lower her risk that are very clear cut, do not potentially increase risk of other diseases and are less controversial (and much cheaper!!). Besides, just ask that mare that’s been confined most of her life while she is maintained in a state of almost constant pregnancy which methods she would prefer…

Hormone therapy shouldn’t be used for the heart – (11-02-00)

February 3, 2013 by James Bogash

HRT Shouldn’t Be Used as Secondary Prevention of Heart Disease

This is always a very sensitive issue with many women. I am ardently opposed to the use of synthetic drugs to “treat” a natural process in women. We have created a disease–menopause. It is a natural state of life, not one to be medicated into eradication. I do support the use of natural HRT if needed, but this constant quest for man to best nature is not good for our health. Not only does the use unquestionably increase your risk of cancer, but with the release of this study (which, ironically, has not been plastered all over the media….???) it blasts another reason many women take HRT–prevention of heart disease.

Pharmacotherapy 20(9):1021-1027, 2000 As described in the pro side of this debate, several CHD benefits are ascribed to estrogen, including positive effects on low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) and promotion of coronary vasodilatation, specifically through endothelium- dependent mechanisms, reduction of fibrinogen levels, and production of antioxidant activity. Although these are plausible mechanisms by which estrogen might provide benefit to patients with CHD, the proven benefit of hormone replacement for secondary prevention of CHD remained untested until the HERS. Hormone replacement therapy has not been proven to reduce cardiovascular events in postmenopausal women with cardiovascular disease. In contrast, it increases the risk of thromboembolism, even in a carefully screened population such as the HERS. Long-term HRT and the age of the targeted population are both associated with increased breast cancer risk.

USE OF HRT MAY CAUSE BREAST CANCER IN WOMEN – (08-14-03)

October 21, 2012 by James Bogash

Breast cancer and HRT in the Million Women Study

No one is going to accuse this study of being too small to weed out potential inaccuracies!! Basically, in this study alone, what has been referred to as a “small” increased risk (mainly in the media) would project to 19,000 additional cases of breast cancer. Unless they find (or make up…) some brilliant new use for HRT then we are witnessing snippets for the epitaph of HRT. Maybe it’s just wishful thinking on my part??…
