Phytoestrogen Consumption and Breast Cancer Risk – (09-10-01)

September 1, 2013 by James Bogash

Phytoestrogen Consumption and Breast Cancer Risk

Scanning quickly would give you the idea that soy intake has no effect on breast cancer risk in non-asian women. Reading further, however, you will find that this study evaluated their “usual” intake of tofu at one serving per week, which is less than the 3+ servings shown to be protective in other studies.

Phytoestrogen Intake Is Associated with Higher Bone Mineral Density – (11-19-01)

Phytoestrogen Intake Is Associated with Higher Bone Mineral Density

The finding that phytoestrogens have a positive effect on bone mass is becoming very well accepted. This study does find that intake effects postmenopausal but not premenopausal women. This finding may not be all that surprising. Recall that the perimenopausal period is one of major shifts in circulating estrogen. Contrary to popular belief, the symptoms of perimenopause are not from low estrogen, but rather from rapid changes in estrogen. By blunting the highs with progesterone (helps to down-regulate estrogen receptors) and filling in the lows with phytoestrogens the symptoms of perimenopause can be alleviated in most cases. This protocol can also help reduce the bone loss associated with the perimenopausal period.

Inflammatory Biomarkers, HRT, and Incident CHD – (09-12-02)

Inflammatory Biomarkers, HRT, and Incident CHD

I still continue to beat my head against the wall trying to figure out why any woman would use this stuff!! There have been no shortage of studies identifying adverse risk with HRT use (many of which HRT has been touted as benefiting for decades…). What’s even more surprising is how adamantly women talking HRT defend their use. Hot flashes and mood swings are the two most common reasons I hear. These can usually be managed very effectively with natural methods which include progesterone and some form of phytoestrogen.

Phytoestrogens Associated with Favorable Cardiovascular Risk Profile – (02-04-02)

Phytoestrogens Associated with Favorable Cardiovascular Risk Profile

Remember research a few weeks back that found that high dose phytoestrogen did not affect blood lipids? I had to comment that the study used high dose phytoestrogen extract, not the whole food.

This article addresses phytoestrogen intake as a part of the diet and found favorable outcomes. I firmly believe that soy and other phytoestrogen containing foods are an essential part of a healthy lifestyle.
