This study suggests that nitrogylcerin applied topically may be as effective as HRT for preventing post-oopherectomy (ovaries surgical removed) bone loss. Such an easy, safe therapy based opon nitric oxides’ effect on bone. Nitroglycerin as well as arginine are precursors to nitric oxide in the bloodstream. Arginine supplementation has also been shown to lower blood pressure, thereby reducing risk of heart disease. To top it all off, side effetcs of arginine are rare, and it is much, much cheaper than Premarin. Oh–and it doesn’t increase risk of breast and endometrial cancer…

HRT – Fact or Fiction??

This is an excellent editorial on the rampant use of HRT in medicine. The article uses well referenced material to basically state that there is a paucity of evidence to support the use of HRT in peri and post-menopausal women and even less on the safety. So why are meds like Premarin so incredibly prevalent? The cynic that loves a Mac over an IBM would gladly give you the answer–good marketing… Remember that managing perimenopause does NOT require medications in the vast majority of women. Blunt the estrogen peaks with progesterone cream (downregulates the estrogen receptors) and fill in the valleys with some form of phytoestrogens (soy, black cohosh, licorice…).

Cardiovascular Disease Outcomes During 6.8 Years of Hormone Therapy

I hate to beat a dead, crumbling dog, but I’m still confused as to why Premarin is one of the top few prescription drugs. No benefit and possible increased risk for heart disease. Increased risk for breast and endometrial cancer. Little, if any benefit on bone health. No benefit for Alzheimer’s disease. What the hell is left?? Hot flashes? Those respond very readily to phytoestrogens and progesterone cream. I’m scratching my head on this one….
