SOY FOOD INTAKE AND COLORECTAL CANCER RISK IN WOMEN – (08-17-09)

February 13, 2012 by James Bogash

Prospective cohort study of soy food intake and colorectal cancer risk in women

No we move to that most dangerous of substances–soy. At least that’s what you’d think if you read the first 20 pages listed on any internet search for “soy.” Unfortunately, the research finds quite the opposite.

In this particular study there was a 33% reduction in the risk of colon cancer with the highest intakes. Hardly the demonic food some of those websites make it out to be.

STUDY OF FISH, N-3 FATTY ACID INTAKE, AND COLORECTAL CANCER RISK IN MEN (02-23-09)

February 12, 2012 by James Bogash

A 22-year Prospective Study of Fish, n-3 Fatty Acid Intake, and Colorectal Cancer Risk in Men

Not to rattle on incessantly about how much we can do about preventing cancer..but I just can’t help it. In this solid, long term study, we find up to a 40% reduction in the risk of colorectal cancer in those men with the highest intake of omega-3 fatty fish such as salmon. Given that colorectal cancer is up there in the number of cases and deaths, this could result in a staggering reduction in the number of cases. Couple this with soluble fiber, health bacterial flora, optimal vitamin D intake and it’s almost GONE.

So why is this message just not making it out to the public? Why do we continue to promote the idea of finding and funding a cure when prevention is so darn clear cut in almost all cases? A side note–there is a clear difference between farm raised and wild caught fish. Salmon in the wild eat algae as a fuel source, which is loaded in DHA and carotenoids. Farmed raised in generally fed grain meal, has dyes added instead of natural carotenoids, is high is pesticides and contributes to the perpetuation of parasites that destroy wild salmon. Still want to order the farmed raised?

SIGNIFICANT HEALTH BENEFITS WITH MICROWAVING – (05-25-09)

February 11, 2012 by James Bogash

Polyamine Metabolism and Transforming Growth Factor-beta Signaling Are Affected in Caco-2 Cells by Differentially Cooked Broccoli Extracts

Ok…don’t let the title put you to sleep…you need to follow along here because there are some very important concepts to be learned. First, there is always concern that microwaving will destroy much of the water soluble healthy compounds in foods.

This study was interesting in that it microwaved broccoli for 0, 1 and 4 minutes and looked at how many genes were activated in a colon cancer cell model. The 1 min sample was almost 3 times more effective than the un-microwaved sample. Next, it was determined that the 4 min sample had all the sulfurophane destroyed, and yet was able to induce positive changes in the toxin metabolism of the cells it was exposed to. I’m not saying that we should all feel free to nuke our broccoli until it’s ash in the tray of the microwave, but in today’s environment where convenience is king, maybe even microwaving a healthy entree (i.e. Kashi, Amy’s) can have significant health benefits.

ADVERSE OUTCOMES FOLLOWING BARIATRIC PROCEDURES (05-04-09)

February 7, 2012 by James Bogash

Increased Colorectal Epithelial Cell Proliferation and Crypt Fission Associated with Obesity and Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

The concept of bariatric surgery has become so accepted that many now view this as a procedure with only positive outcomes. However, messing with the way our bodies digest and assimilate food is never a good thing, and the long term safety of these procedures have never been demonstrated.

We have, however, seen a variety of research studies finding adverse outcomes following bariatric procedures. This study adds to the weight of this evidence, suggesting that, after this procedure, there is an increased risk of colorectal cancer.

COLON CANCER: WHAT IS YOUR TEEN EATING?

December 21, 2011 by James Bogash

Most people who have been diagnosed with colon cancer will ask themselves and their doctors what can be done to help the outcome.  Few will be foresighted enough to ask what behaviors they have created in their children that will create the same outcome as the parent.

Cancer is what we refer to as a long latency disease.  In other words, you don’t light up your first cigarette today and get lung cancer tomorrow.  It takes decades for the abuse to our bodies to manifest into the chronic diseases of today.  Maybe this is why chronic diseases are so hard to overcome with short-latency approaches like drugs…?

There are countless examples of behaviors in youth that have later impacts on chronic disease.  Just a few include:

  • Soy intake as a teen cuts breast cancer rates as an adult by more than half
  • Sunlight exposure as a teen cuts prostate cancer rates in half
  • Sunlight exposure as a teen cuts breast cancer rates by 35%

This is, of course, merely the short list.  There is clearly enough evidence to say that critical points in cancer development actually occur during our youth, likely starting as earlier as conception (if not before!).

This particular study adds to the list of studies that demonstrates teenage behaviors contribute greatly to long term colon cancer rates.  In particular:

  • Highest intakes of vitamin A lowered risk 18%
  • Highest vegetable lowered risk 19%
  • Highest intakes of calcium lowered risk 17%
  • Highest intakes of vitamin C 17%
  • Fruit 16%
  • Milk 22% (more on this later)
  • Higher total fat increased risk 15%
  • Re meat  increased risk 31%
  • Processed meat 24%

Regular readers will know that I am no fan of dairy, so I would, of course, not jump on the recommendation that teenagers should be drinking more milk.  It may very well be that the protective effect may have been related to the calcium in the dairy or the replacement of dairy in the diet for something more toxic like soda.

Overall, though, you should clearly see that decisions that our teens make can have a massive impact on their long term health.  What lifestyle habits are you teaching your kids?

DIET LEADS TO MORE AGGRESSIVE CANCER

November 21, 2011 by James Bogash

DIET LEADS TO MORE AGGRESSIVE CANCER. For years now, we have understood that diet strongly drives how much inflammation our bodies have. This mean joint pain, headaches, diabetes, cancer, heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, autoimmune conditions like RA, Lupus, psoriasis…did I miss any?

In the human body, I consider inflammation as a giant domino setup. To the left is a large number of dominos all aiming towards one single gold domino. To the right expands out more dominos. Knock down one of the left dominos, and ultimately the gold dominio goes. Knock the gold domino down and you start the cascade of other dominos we know as inflammation. Rows out to the right are where our drugs come in–AFTER the gold domino has fallen. To the left is lifestyle. Preserve these and the gold domino stands. This gold domino has a name and plays a role in : NF kappa B.

HOW TO DROP COLON CANCER RATES?

November 21, 2011 by James Bogash

Dropping colon cancer rates AGAIN? You’re now taking Vit D to drop your risk 45% or so. Increasing intake of soy for women can drop it another 21%. I know soy’s gotten a bad rap, but I can’t figure out why. The research is VERY strongly in support of soy.  However, this is REAL soy, not the processed junk (NO veggie burgers, soy dogs, Tofurky..).  Keep in mind that it is not just the soy, but the presence of health bacteria in the gut that produces some of the strongest benefits of soy.

So it is likely that things like antiobiotics will prevent soy from exerting it’s strongest protective benefits. But do the math…we’re practically eliminating colon cancer here!!  Where are the front page headlines?

WHICH B VITAMIN CAN CUT COLON CANCER RISK IN HALF?

November 20, 2011 by James Bogash

WHICH B VITAMIN CAN CUT COLON CANCER RISK IN HALF?  There has been some confusion over folic acid’s effect on the risk of colon cancer. Sometimes it protects, sometimes it increases the risk.  Overall, it seems like folic acid, if used before the development of colon cancer, protects.  If used after the beginnings of precancerous growth has begun, it increases.  It may also depend heavily upon your genetic makeup (specifically the MTHFR enzyme–which CAN be checked easily).

This study looks at another B vitamin that is important is some of the same pathways as folic acid-B6 and finds that higher levels in the blood lower risk by half.  So, a good quality multi (no one-a-day types), good quality diet w/ a blend of soluble and insoluble fiber and an overall anti-cancer lifestyle will likely cut your risk dramatically.
