REDUCE CANCER RATES BY SUPPLEMENTING VITAMIN D – (10-29-07)

April 17, 2012 by James Bogash

Optimal Vitamin D Status for Colorectal Cancer Prevention – A Quantitative Meta Analysis

1,000 to 2,000 IU/day of Vit D could result in a 50% reduction in cancer rates. 50%. One half. With no known side effects to Vit D supplementation at this level, and little risk with rationale sun exposure. Shouldn’t this information be plastered across every piece of marketing material the American Cancer Society puts out? If the benefit is so clear cut, why do I still get push back from people in the community when I suggest 2,000 IU/day? Shouldn’t everyone be aware of this by now?

I can’t begin to explain my frustration with all the focus on “finding a cure” when knowledge about prevention is so incredibly strong. And this is just one approach, which, incidentally, would also be in line with the AHA’s and ADA’s agendas, since they purport to lower the burden of their respective diseases.

HOW TO REDUCE CANCER RISKS IN COLON CANCER PATIENTS? – (09-17-07)

April 15, 2012 by James Bogash

Dietary synbiotics reduce cancer risk factors in polypectomized and colon cancer patients

Now that I’m knee deep in a family member being treated for cancer, I can say that one of the more “renowned” cancer groups here in AZ is not anywhere I would again take a family member. There is absolutely no consideration for supporting normal physiology and helping reduce the side effects of treatment and increasing the effectiveness of treatment. It’s really, really difficult to watch from the sidelines.

In this study, we find positive effects with the combination of specific probiotics with short chain fatty acids (produced when bacteria digest soluble fiber in the gut) on colon cancer markers. This raises 2 questions–given that we know that this combination helps prevent colon cancer, why do we not use it for treatment and what does this say about our society’s overuse of antibiotics killing off the normal, protective flora?

RISK OF COLORECTAL CANCER AND COLON CANCER – (03-05-07)

April 5, 2012 by James Bogash

Risk of Colorectal Cancer is linked to Erythrocyte Compositions of Fatty Acids as Biomarkers for Dietary Intakes of Fish, Fat, and Fatty Acids

Another wow. Look at these odds ratios…as high as an 9.45 times increase in risk of colon cancer with higher levels of saturated fat / lower levels of healthier fats in red blood cells. This is one of those reasons I have such a beef with our national organizations.

Information like this needs to be disseminated to everyone within earshot. Just by increasing our intake of healthier fats and reducing intake of unhealthy fats we could make a serious dent in the rates of one of the greater cancer killers. But our national organizations remain silent, instead pushing to collect ever more money to find a “cure” for a very preventable disease.

ASSOCIATION OF DIETARY PATTERNS WITH CANCER RECURRENCE – (02-11-08)

March 18, 2012 by James Bogash

Association of Dietary Patterns With Cancer Recurrence and Survival in Patients With Stage III Colon Cancer

There is an unfortunate attitude among many (if not most) oncologists in this country. Basically, the human body and its own inherent physiology no longer matters in the outcome of the cancer. Along these same lines, any type of supplementation or dietary change will be inconsequential in the total picture. However, this attitude is blatantly false with much research to back it up. That’s all fine and dandy, but the patient’s life is literally hanging in the balance.

In today’s day and age, with the amount of research backing it up, it should be considered malpractice for an oncologist NOT to fully integrate physiology-based natural interventions to lower the risk of side effects and increase the outcomes of cancer patients.

In this study alone, we see patients adopting a typical Western-type diet having more than TRIPLE the risk of death or recurrence of colon cancer. Triple?

CHILDHOOD DAIRY INTAKE TRIPLES RISK OF COLORECTAL CANCER IN ADULTS – (05-26-08)

March 4, 2012 by James Bogash

Childhood dairy intake and adult cancer risk: 65-y follow-up

For those of you still brainwashed into believing that “milk does a body good” you’d better sit down. In this trial, which looked at the adolescents’ dairy intake and the risk of certain cancer 65 years later. They found almost a TRIPLIING of risk for colorectal cancer in the adults who had the highest dairy intake as a child. And this was dairy 65 yrs ago–free from antibiotics, growth hormones and xenohormetic stressors!!

Of course, this can’t compare to a dairy sponsored clinically trials determine that prostate cancer risk is not elevated in infants consuming dairy for 3 yrs…But seriously…how the heck is it that dairy recommendations have infiltrated EVERY public health recommendation from federal down to county when the evidence for it is weak at best? The only answer is that the dairy industry’s money wields massive influence and ability to brainwash an entire country.

RISK REDUCTION IN COLORECTAL CANCER WITH MSM – (03-08-10)

February 25, 2012 by James Bogash

Associations of Herbal and Specialty Supplements with Lung and Colorectal Cancer Risk

Wow…I didn’t see this one coming!! Look at the risk reduction from what would be found in better joint support formulas 54% reduction in colorectal cancer risk w/ MSM? It all makes sense when you look at it, but even with my background, I have always looked at a joint support formula as just that. MSM, as a sulfur donor, does result in a short lived detox with some points when they initially begin, and this could play a large role in cancer reduction. As for the increase in cancer rates with garlic supplementation, this is one of those supplements (like cinnamon) that I tell patients to avoid and just obtain from your diet in it’s whole form.

CAN FRUITS AND VEGGIES LOWER RISK OF CANCER? (08-24-09)

February 15, 2012 by James Bogash

Higher Intakes of Vegetables and Vegetable-Related Nutrients Are Associated with Lower Endometrial Cancer Risks

Ok..I’m getting sick of hearing myself repeat this. The horse is not only dead, but fully decomposed and it’s nutrients reabsorbed by the foliage…Highest intakes of fruits and veggies led to 49% reduced risk.

RED MEAT AND COLON CANCER; THE HIDDEN FACTOR

February 13, 2012 by James Bogash

There has always been some degree of disagreement when it comes to the connection between red meat and colon cancer. Like most things when it comes to good health, the answer and the connections are not that simple.

I remember having a “discussion” a decade or so ago with a representative from the AZ Beef Council who absolutely refused to acknowledge that red meat was a player in colon cancer and heart disease. Not that she had a biased position (I could imagine that her tenure as an employee would probably be pretty short without this biased opinion).

Now, more than a decade later, it is clear that an animal based diet high in animal based proteins (the magic number seems to be around 20%–so keep animal proteins, including dairy, under 20% of your protein intake). But the story is not that straightforward.

Clearly, the quality of the meat plays a role.  Organic, grass fed beef that is grass fed throughout the entire lifecycle will have a better effect on our health. Wild game falls into the same category. And for the record, pork is NOT the “other white meat.” Really…when was the last time you looked at bacon and thought “white meat”…?

Adding spices to red meat can increase the value of the meat and lower the potential for damage to our health.

This particular article adds more information to the overall picture of how red meat consumption does or does not contribute to colon cancer risk.

Regular readers will already know what a telomere is. As a refresher, consider them as the wick on the end of the DNA of our cells. When this wick burns down, that’s it. The cell is no more. So, the longer the telomere on the end of our DNA, the longer that cell is going to live and, by extension, the longer you are going to live.  (Click here to read more on telomeres)

The authors looked at what happened to the length of the telomeres of the colon cells when resistant starch was added to a diet of red meat and found that resistant starch actually protected the telomeres from being shortened in the presence of red meat in the diet.

This says two things. First, red meat clearly plays some role in the development of colon cancer. Two, the addition of resistant starch (think of foods like beans, whole grains and basmati rice) protected the telomeres in the colon cells.
