Exogenous hyperinsulinaemia on VLDL composition in normal subjects – (04-12-01)

Exogenous hyperinsulinaemia on VLDL composition in normal subjects

This study finds that exogenous insulin (from outside the body such as what diabetics inject) will produce unfavourable changes in cholesterol composition. This brings to mind a conversation I had with a diabetic representing the ADA at a health fair. She felt that it was okay to eat high glycemic foods because all she had to do was inject her fast-acting insulin and she would be okay. She just didn’t get it. Insulin itself, in high levels, is a dangerous hormone. This article points out just one potentially damaging effect of insulin therapy.

Lyon Diet Heart Study – (05-03-01)

Lyon Diet Heart Study

This is a wonderful article outlining very nicely what a Mediterranean diet consist of. I am a big, big fan of the Mediterranean diet and feel that, for most patients, it is probably one of the healthiest on the planet. In previous studies it has been compared to the ADA and AHA diets and pretty much puts them to shame; and yet these organizations continue to recommend their outdated, ineffective programs.

US Dental groups sued over use of mercury – (06-25-01)

July 2, 2013 by James Bogash

US Dental groups sued over use of mercury

Remember that the ADA was formed mainly to promote the use of mercury as safe in amalgam fillings. There is now no question that mercury from fillings can and does end up in the bloodstream and breast milk, and that mercury is very toxic to the human nervous system. Not a very good track record for the ADA. And yet they are looked to as an authority when it comes to the use of fluoride in municipal drinking water…

(article) A coalition of public interest groups sued the American Dental Association (ADA) and the California Dental Association (CDA) on Tuesday, claiming they have misled the public about the dangers of mercury in tooth fillings. The lawsuits, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, are the latest salvo in a growing battle over mercury fillings, which opponents say can poison the body with leaking vapors possibly linked to Alzheimer’s disease and other neurological problems, especially in children and unborn babies. The dental associations insist that mercury is safe when mixed with other metals and implanted in teeth and that studies have failed to demonstrate that the low level vapors are dangerous. The lawsuits allege violations of California’s business and professions code and charge that the ADA and the CDA have issued rules preventing dentists from discussing the dangers of mercury with patients. “The worst thing they are doing is hiding the presence of mercury in fillings — which they call silver amalgam — and trying to keep dentists from saying the ‘M’ word and keep consumers from hearing the ‘M’ word,” plaintiffs’ attorney Charles Brown said. “These fillings are 50% mercury.” “We consider it to be safe and the science certainly indicates that it is,” CDA spokeswoman Linda Seifert said, adding that her organization advocates that dentists explain the risks of any procedure to patients. Fred Peterson, a spokesman for the ADA, said he could not discuss the lawsuit but issued a prepared statement which maintains that the fillings are safe. The National Institutes of Health are conducting clinical trials to investigate the effects of mercury fillings in children. Other studies of mercury in fillings have been inconclusive. Similar lawsuits have been filed in federal court in Maryland by dentists and patients, while state legislatures in New York and Maine are considering bills that would require dentists to disclose to patients the makeup of their fillings.

Nutrition and Recommendations for Diabetes and Related Complications – (12-31-01)

Nutrition and Recommendations for Diabetes and Related Complications

This is the position statement by the ADA for the nutritional intervention in patients with diabetes. If this wasn’t the ADA I would dismiss it as inconsequential. Unfortunately, this paper will be viewed as the bible by many physicians and diabetic patients. Interested in my take? Once again, the ADA has shown that governmental or high profile groups are over conservative to the point of being damaging. I could point out all the issues that I disagree with, but the entire position is here for you to read. I will point out a few of the issues I feel most strongly about. First, registered dieticians should be the primary source of nutritional education for diabetic patients. I’m going to go out on a limb and probably upset some people, but most RDs do not have the background in physiology, biochemistry and diagnosis to do much more than match a meal to the RDAs given by the government. There are some I have come across that have a tremendous background in these aspects, but far more often I see diabetic patients who were never educated about refined carbs and beneficial vs harmful fats. Second, this paper basically states that all carbs are created equal. What rock have these people been studying under? The lack of understanding in this statement alone makes it hard to stomach the rest of the paper….

DECREASE IN MORTALITY WITH PEOPLE WITH MEDITERRANEAN DIET – (10-13-04)

November 3, 2012 by James Bogash

Mediterranean Diet, Lifestyle Factors, and 10-Year Mortality in Elderly

I have been a strong supporter of the Mediterranean Diet for a long time and it’s great when studies come out suggesting a FIFTY PERCENT decrease in mortality with persons following a Mediterranean-type diet. Remember that the Med diet comes out of a culture that had a low mortality from many chronic diseases. The national organizations (AHA, ADA…) come up with a diet plan they THINK will help. And don’t think that special interests and the almightly dollar do not play a major role.

REDUCE CANCER RATES BY SUPPLEMENTING VITAMIN D – (10-29-07)

April 17, 2012 by James Bogash

Optimal Vitamin D Status for Colorectal Cancer Prevention – A Quantitative Meta Analysis

1,000 to 2,000 IU/day of Vit D could result in a 50% reduction in cancer rates. 50%. One half. With no known side effects to Vit D supplementation at this level, and little risk with rationale sun exposure. Shouldn’t this information be plastered across every piece of marketing material the American Cancer Society puts out? If the benefit is so clear cut, why do I still get push back from people in the community when I suggest 2,000 IU/day? Shouldn’t everyone be aware of this by now?

I can’t begin to explain my frustration with all the focus on “finding a cure” when knowledge about prevention is so incredibly strong. And this is just one approach, which, incidentally, would also be in line with the AHA’s and ADA’s agendas, since they purport to lower the burden of their respective diseases.
