Chronic Elevation of Insulin, IGF Levels May Raise Colon Cancer Risk

Previous studies have shown that refined carbs, which stimulate a strong insulin response, increase risk of many types of cancer. This may be the mechanism by which this happens. Also of note is the fact that the use of human growth hormone will raise the levels of IGF–creating doubt about the beneficial use of HGH as a fountain of youth wonder.

J Natl Cancer Inst 2000;92:1592-1600 The risk of colorectal cancer may be increased by chronically high levels of circulating insulin and insulinlike growth factors (IGFs) associated with a Western lifestyle, possibly by decreasing IGF-binding protein 1 and increasing the bioactivity of IGF-I. Dr. Rudolf Kaaks, of the International Agency for research on Cancer, in Lyon, France, and colleagues note in the October 4th issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute that “leading a Western lifestyle, being overweight and being sedentary are associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer.” “Furthermore, the slightly stronger association of levels of serum C-peptide with risk of colon cancer than with risk of cancers of the colon and rectum combined also fits observations that obesity and lack of physical activity are related to an increased risk particularly of colon cancer,” they conclude.

Amino Acids Strongly Enhances Insulin Secretion in Type 2 DM.

In patients with diabetes, the pancreas begin to putter out and ultimately produces less and less insulin (as opposed to syndrome X, where hyperinsulinemia is the damaging force). Many diabetic drugs are designed to force the pancreas to produce more insulin. Here we see that certain amino acids can have the same effects, thus giving dietary recommendations a strong therapeutic potential for treatment of diabetes. What is interesting is that the insulin response was strongest in a specific amino acid preparation along with a carbohydrate meal. This also puts a wrench in the works for those that say high protein diets work by lowering the body’s response to insulin.

Monounsaturated Fatty Acids Prevent the Deleterious Effects of Palmitate and High Glucose on Human Pancreatic Beta-Cell Turnover and Function.

This article finds that monounsaturated fatty acids (i.e. olive oil, nuts, avacodos…) not only protected the beta cells of the pancreas (the cells that produce insulin) from damage, but also increased their proliferation. This would make monounsaturated fatty acids absolutely essential for treatment of both diabetes and Syndrome X.

Well, I think with the link to gall stones, that pretty much implicates insulin as a conspiratory in just about all diseases known to man. I remember a “discussion” with a woman representing the American Diabetic Association at a health event. She say no problem eating processed sugars because she could just use her “fast acting insulin.” She just doesn’t get it.

Exogenous hyperinsulinaemia on VLDL composition in normal subjects

This study finds that exogenous insulin (from outside the body such as what diabetics inject) will produce unfavourable changes in cholesterol composition. This brings to mind a conversation I had with a diabetic representing the ADA at a health fair. She felt that it was okay to eat high glycemic foods because all she had to do was inject her fast-acting insulin and she would be okay. She just didn’t get it. Insulin itself, in high levels, is a dangerous hormone. This article points out just one potentially damaging effect of insulin therapy.

Influence of melatonin on glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity

I’ve always been a little nervous about using any type of hormone replacement therapy be it estrogen, growth hormone, testesterone, insulin or melatonin. Precursers to these hormones may generally be considered safer because the body may only convert into the active hormone that which it needs. Melatonin was viewed as the “anti aging hormone of the week” several years ago after some studies in mice showed lower levels in aged mice when compared with younger mice. This study suggests a effect of meltonin on decreasing our bodies ability to use glucose efficiently.

Large Artery Stiffness Accompanies the Insulin Resistance Syndrome

I am a firm believer that, as we discover more and more about the arteries and their modulation by insulin, that the concept of “essential” hypertension will fall by the wayside. 90% of HTN is essential with no known cause. It very well may be that the real cause of a large chunk of this hypertension is hyperinsulinemia adversely affecting the contractility of the arterial walls. The inter-related nature of physiology and organ systems really becomes apparent when you look at problems and solutions from a different angle–exercise is known to lower blood pressure. Could it be that exercise does this by increasing insulin sensitivity and lowering blood pressure through this pathway???
