ASSOCIATION BETWEEN DIETARY ARGININE AND C-REACTIVE PROTEIN – (03-28-05)

May 12, 2012 by James Bogash

Association between dietary arginine and C-reactive protein

We really can’t let information like this get out.  That would totally ruin the drug company’s hopes for the next blockbuster drug when they finally figure out how to lower CRP pharmaceutically.  Of course, the fact that managing insulin resistance, exercise and fish oils bring down CRP levels has not stopped them.

But, mark my words–the second it is confirmed that a drug lowers CRP levels (there are currently several trials of the potential for statins to lower CRP), there will be advertisements all over telling patients to have their CRP levels checked…  We saw the same push with irritable bowel syndrome once the new anti-motility drugs were released.

EXERCISE, DIET AND NUTRITION ARE LESS DANGEROUS THAN DRUGS – (03-28-05)

May 9, 2012 by James Bogash

Effect of two alpha-glucosidase inhibitors on postprandial hyperglycemia correlates w/ abdominal symptoms

That’s just great.  The person who is most likely to respond to this class of drugs is the one who has the most stomach upset from the drug.  At some point don’t we have to decide that exercise, diet and targeted nutritional supplementation are just a little easier and less fatal?

TRY OTHER WAYS TO LOWER YOUR RISK OF HEART ATTACK – (05-01-05)

May 6, 2012 by James Bogash

A Randomized Trial of Low-Dose Aspirin in the Primary Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease in Women

I guess it’s not the results of this study that should surprise everyone, but rather the thought process behind it.  This study did not show a benefit in women in preventing a first cardiovascular event with the use of aspirin.  What surprises me is this never ending quest to find a single agent to effect a single disease (statins, anyone?).  Many of these, “one cause, one cure” approaches affect only the disease looking to be improved, if that.

However, the other 20 recommendations to lower your risk of a heart attack like a low glycemic index diet, exercise, fish oils, lots of fruits and veggies, etc… will have a side effect of lowering your risk for just about every chronic disease.  So we focus on one single intervention like taking aspirin to lower our risk of heart attack, when we should educate the public about refined carbs and insulin resistance.

AVOID FOOD ALLERGIES TO OPTIMISE HEALTH – (05-16-05)

April 24, 2012 by James Bogash

Exercise and aspirin increase levels of circulating gliadin peptides in patients with wheat-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis

Now isn’t this a convoluted mess?  Aspirin and exercise seem to increase the absorption of allergens into the bloodstream.  Such, aspirin can increase the permeability of the gut and allow stuff to get in that shouldn’t, but exercise?

Just goes to show that exercise is not the only key to optimal health.  Identification and avoidance of food allergies is an important aspect of optimal health.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CHARACTERISTICS AMONG ADULTS – (05-23-05)

April 21, 2012 by James Bogash

Healthy Lifestyle Characteristics Among Adults in the United States, 2000

Okay, so I don’t expect all of my patients to start eating tofu and rice just because I say so.  But in a recent survey of 153,000 US adults, only a whopping 3% follow the four.

“Healthy Lifestyle Characteristics” used in this study:  no smoking, 5+ fruits and veggies/day, health BMI and exercise 30 mins 5X/week.  3%. And these recommendations are basic!!  No wonder the health of this country continues to decline and we are now looking at a reduction in the life expectancy (something I have been predicting for several years now).

CONSUME FRUITS AND VEGETABLES TO REDUCE RISK OF COLORECTAL CANCER – (12-03-07)

April 21, 2012 by James Bogash

Dietary Flavonoids and the Risk of Colorectal Cancer

I’ve said many times before that one of the reasons I do not support our national organizations is that they spent very minimal time on prevention and consistently preach about finding a cure. The bottom line is that we have so many opportunities to prevent many types of cancer that they should essentially not be present in our society, let alone a major killer. But the appropriate details never seem to get out to the general public. The most specific we ever get is “eat your fruits and vegetables.” Hardly specific. Knowing which fruits and veggies pack the strongest punch can help.

This article reviews the effect of a variety of flavonoids on colon cancer and found that the risk reduction could be as high as 32% for quercitin (high in onions) and catechins (high in teas). This is with one single intervention. Add in vitamin D, exercise, high fiber coupled w/ healthy bacterial flora, etc, and you’ve pretty much eliminated all but the most tough cases.

EFFECT OF COCOA AND TEA ON BLOOD PRESSURE – (12-03-07)

April 21, 2012 by James Bogash

Effect of Cocoa and Tea Intake on Blood Pressure

Let’s face it. Adding dark chocolate to your daily life really isn’t all that painful. Dark chocolate is a regular staple around our house and my 2 year old always gets a small corner of whatever I’m eating. This article is actually a meta-analysis, looking at 5 different studies on cocoa consumption and blood pressure.

The authors concluded that, in a mere 2 wks, that cocoa could drop systolic blood pressure an average of 4.7 mm. Not that may not sound like much, but remember that the best approach to any chronic condition is multifactorial, and in this case increasing intake of dark chocolate is only one intervention that would be used to help manage blood pressure along w/ managing insulin resistance, exercise and stress management.

Depression In Epilepsy – 6 Tips to Heal Your Brain

March 26, 2012 by James Bogash

As if seizures were not bad enough, there is a high number of epileptics that also suffer from depression.  This becomes a problem for a multitude of reasons, from medication compliance to maintaining a positive outlook with an internal locus of control (yes–those who believe that they have control over their seizures have better overall seizure control and a high quality of life).
