Flavonoids, Whole Juice From Purple Grapes Inhibit Platelet Function and Enhance Nitric Oxide Release. – (06-21-01)

Flavonoids, Whole Juice From Purple Grapes Inhibit Platelet Function and Enhance Nitric Oxide Release

Many people jumped on the news release over the past few years that red wine is good for our health. Indeed, the research does support this, but it is not the red wine–it is the bioflavonoids found in the grapes (mainly resverotrol) that actually provide the benefit. This study looks at the cardiovascular benefits, but grape seed extract containing pycnogenol has also shown the ability to stabilize cellular membranes, potentially helping with many nervous system disorders.

ApoB is inhibited by the flavonoids, naringenin and hesperetin – (05-31-01)

ApoB is inhibited by the flavonoids, naringenin and hesperetin

This japanese sounding title refers to the ability of certain natural compounds found in various fruits, to lower cholesterol levels. Ironically, naringenin is the substance in grapefruit that leads to the recommendation of avoiding it (actually…only about 50% of patients on coumidin get this recommendation…) while on coumidin because of its ability to inhibit phase I detoxification in the liver.

Flavonoids of Cocoa Inhibit Recombinant Human 5-Lipoxygenase – (07-08-02)

Flavonoids of Cocoa Inhibit Recombinant Human 5-Lipoxygenase

I’m not saying we need to run out and inhale Hershey’s bars, but cocoa does seem to consistently achieve benefits from it’s flavonoid (epicatechin and catechin polyphenols–similar to those in green tea) components. Remember here that we are talking about cocoa–not the chemically treated and milk mixed chocolate that we normally think of. If it is chocolate your trying hard to justify (and aren’t we all?) stick with dark chocolate.

Flavonoids in grape juice protect the LDL from becoming oxidized – (12-05-02)

March 26, 2013 by James Bogash

Comparison of antioxidant effects of Concord grape juice flavonoids & alpha-tocopherol on markers of oxidative stress

While the findings that flavonoids in grape juice have potent antioxidant properties should not drop anyone’s jaw, this is a good time to remind everyone that, while we throw on our blinders and look only at cholesterol as the “bad guy” in CVD, the reality is that LDL cholesterol does not do any damage until the LDL itself gets damaged. The flavonoids in grape juice protect the LDL from becoming oxidized.

Effects of white and red wine on endothelial function – (07-02-04)

Effects of white and red wine on endothelial function in subjects with coronary artery disease

Along those same lines… The research is strongly in support of flavonoids found in cocoa, tea and red wine when he comes to keeping our blood vessels healthy.

Black Tea and Coronary Heart Disease – (07-12-01)

February 3, 2013 by James Bogash

Black Tea Reverses Endothelial Dysfunction in Coronary Artery Disease

I don’t remember seeing tea on Dr. Dean Ornish’s program to reverse heart disease, but maybe it should be added! Remember that the flavonoids present in tea have shown many other beneficial effects as well, ranging from anticancer to antidiabetic properties. This study was done only on black tea, but typically, whatever black tea does, green tea does better. If it hasn’t been already, tea should be replacing all the soft drinks and coffee in everyone’s lifestyle itinerary.

ASSOCIATION WITH ANTIBIOTIC USE AND BREAST CANCER – (01-17-05)

May 19, 2012 by James Bogash

FLAVONOID GLUCOSIDES ARE HYDROLYZED AND THUS ACTIVATED IN THE ORAL CAVITY

You can add this one to the damaging effects of antibiotics. Always irks me when all the concern about antibiotic overuse focuses on antibiotic resistance, when the real, long term damage comes from destroying normal bacterial flora.

This study finds that the bacterial conversion of certain flavonoids (genistein from soy and quercetin from onions) can occur as early as the oral cavity, thus producing more effective compounds to protect the oral cavity from diseases such as cancer. So, while antibiotics may not cause cancer, they may remove some of the potential protective effects given to us by foods. We have seen an association with antibiotic use and breast cancer recently as well.

FISH OILS AND FLAVONOIDS REDUCE ARRHYTHMIAS – (03-28-05)

May 10, 2012 by James Bogash

QTc Prolongation by Grapefruit Juice and its Potential Pharmacological Basis

After a class I taught recently, I had a patient come up and ask me about coumidin’s interaction with other natural compounds (specifically, I believe, fish oils).  She was on coumidin for atrial arrhythmia which, quite frankly, is not a bad idea if nothing else is attempted.

However, with rising evidence of fish oils and now flavonoids being able to reduce arrhythmias, the permanent use of blood thinning agents may need to be re-evaluated.  Especially in the light that patients on blood thinners have to avoid most green leafy veggies which have unquestionable major benefits on long term health.
