Did You Know Your Irregular Heartbeat Causes Brain Damage?

I don’t write much about atrial fibrillation or causes of irregular heartbeat, but I have a pretty strong understanding of how to fix it.

Why?  Because I wrote a book on migraines and seizures (which, incidentally, can be found by clicking here).  “What does that have to do with anything?” you ask.

Well, because the cells of the brain function very much like the cells that regulate your heartbeat.  They are heavily dependent on high levels of energy (in the form of ATP) to NOT fire.  Basically, a charge has to build up and build up until it is time for that cell to fire, whether it is to fire off a brain cell or the heart muscles.

Just like improving chronic migraine headaches or improving seizures in epilepsy, the key is to stop doing things to damage your mitochondria (the part of the cell that makes the needed ATP) and start doing things to improve the way your mitochondria function.  While that is beyond the scope of this blog post (other than mentioning that stress and too many low quality calories are major contributor), you can read about improving mitochondrial function in a previous blog article by clicking here.

The rates of Afib are increasing in direct proportion to how sick our population is.  Many times the condition is just watched, but in more problematic situations, beta blockers may be used (which will increase the risk of diabetes and stroke) or anticoagulants like warfarin or coumidin or a cardiologist may thread a wire up into your heart and burn out the cells that he or she believes are causing the problem (called ablation for afib).

All of this brings us to this particular study.  In it, researchers looked at what happens to the cognitive abilities of those over age 75 who developed atrial fibrillation.  Overall, it was clear that, in those who developed atrial fibrillation, there was a faster decline (about 2 years faster) in cognitive function that got worse the longer the Afib was present.

“But I’m not 75, so my Afib is not the same issue,” you say.

Yup.  It’s likely worse because YOUR atrial fibrillation will be present for many more years.  And while your atrial fibrillation may be noticeable, the subtle damage to your brain won’t be for decades to come.

The bottom line is that, if you have ANY degree of Afib, lifestyle changes are needed.  And caffeine avoidance, which may have been mentioned to you, is low on the list.  Stress management, exercise and a high quality / low calorie diet are at the top of the list.

You need to understand that the heart palpitations are only a single symptom of a much greater problem.

The sad part about situations like this is that the women undergoing these surgeries (along with bilateral prophalactic mastectomy) were probably never informed that there are countless other ways to lower your risk of certain types of cancer that do not remove the potential target. It just seems absolutely crazy–in no way whatsoever does this change the underlying biochemical defect that led to the increased risk in the first place! A perfect example is the ApoE4 genotype. Five years ago these people were basically given a death sentence from either heart disease or Alzheimer’s. Now, with additional information, we realize that patients with this genotype just need increase antioxidant protection to bring their risk down. Hopefully these patients did not have their brain or heart removed…

If you know that transthyretin is a protein that scavenges amyloid protein in the brain, this article really contains some interesting info as it relates to Alzheimer’s disease. Although this is a rat study, I’m sure we will find that the results transfer to humans.

As much as people don’t want to hear it, I consider Alzheimer’s and many other forms of dementia as consequences of a Westernized diet. Here we see that poor glycemic control (dysglycemia, Syndrome X…) leads to poor mental functioning performance. Anyone worried about memory and brain performance needs to address glucose control.

Dietary Intake of Antioxidants and Risk of Alzheimer Disease

Gosh…what more can I add here? The concept that antioxidants can impact chronic disease is far, far from new. Here we see that intakes of Vitamins C and E lower risk of AD. I would strongly add that anyone at risk or concerned about AD evaluate the potential for gluten insensitivity. Transglutaminase is probably one of the better lad values used to check for this. Patients with gluten insensitivity have shown higher likelihood of plaguing on the brain as well as increased risk for AD. As a quick story, I had a patient in several weeks ago that was put on dapsone (an antibacterial drug commonly used in leprosy) a decade ago for dermatitis herpetiformis (a skin condition associated with gluten insensitivity). He was told that wheat-free diets were too difficult and that this drug was a lifetime therapy. HUH??? At what point did common sense leave the medical profession?? This poor patient was clearly allergic to gluten and was likely doing additional damage to other organ systems, but never mind that–just take the drug. After a brief conversation he was off to buy books on wheat-free living.

Worried About Alzheimer’s Dementia or Parkinsons? You NEED to Add This

With any chronic condition such as Alzheimer’s dementia, whether talking about prevention or treatment, I never advocate a one disease: one cure model.  The natural approach necessitates a complete lifestyle change.  This is where the power of lifestyle comes in–the benefits of hundreds of positive choices adding together to produce a massive improvement.

I have certainly addressed the mitochondrial dysfunction model of neurodegenerative disorders in previous blog posts and will not go into this model in detail here (although previous blog posts on the topic can be read by clicking here).  However, it can be summarized by saying that anything that helps with the way your brain cells make energy is good while anything that harms the way your brain cells make energy is bad.  Too much of a loss in the ability of your brain to make energy and you start to lose brain cells.  While we can all tolerate the loss of a few here and there, too many brain cells lost can lead to the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s dementia or Parkinson’s disease.

Antioxidants clearly benefit our brain and protect the mitochondria within your brain cells, and thus, in general, will lower your risk of developing neurodegenerative disorders.  Antioxidants can come internally, such as cellular made coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) or the enzymes superoxide dismutase or glutathione peroxidase, or they can come from the foods you eat or what you drink.  Examples can include:

  • Vitamin E (ONLY as mixed tocopherols)
  • Coenzyme Q10 supplements
  • Coffee or tea
  • Other phytonutrients (the thousands of compounds that make up the colors, scents, smells and tastes of the plant world)

Some phytonutrients are more potent than others, which brings us to this particular study.

Researchers looked at a mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease to see how well an extract from pomegranates could halt or slow the progression of the disease.  The results were pretty good in the group of mice prone to the formation of amyloid plaques (like those seen in Alzheimer’s dementia) given the pomegranate extract compared to the same type of mice not give the extract:

  • The pomegranate feeding shortened the distance it took for the mice to get out of a maze.
  • The extract group had less inflammation in the brain (based on TNF-alpha and NFAT levels).
  • The pomegranate fed group had less “turning on” of the immune system in the brain (termed microgliosis).
  • The pomegranate group had less amyloid plaque formation.
  • 2 polyphenol components of pomegranate extract, punicalagin and ellagic acid, seemed to do the bulk of the work.

Overall, while this was a mouse study, the results were pretty strong in suggesting that the mere addition of a pomegranate extract was able to protect the brain in multiple ways from the Alzheimer’s progression.

As always, you should never follow a one-cause, one-cure model, but a sip or two of pomegranate juice may not be a bad idea.  Better yet, as the summer rolls around I’ll be able to pick my own pomegranates from my backyard trees and eat the seeds directly.

I’m sure my brain will thank me.

The sideline view of this whole debacle is very entertaining. We are now seeing a scramble to find a use for this multi-billion dollar gold mine. Lets see…lower your risk of Alzheimer’s only to die from breast or endometrial cancer or heart disease. If Alzheimer’s is a concern, how about boosting antioxidant intake (the ApoE4 genotype leads to increased risk unless balanced out with increased antioxidants), lowering aluminum exposure and balancing with increased zinc, ginko biloba use and checking for wheat allergy that can increase risk as well.
