Lifestyle, hormones, and risk of breast cancer

This is an interesting viewpoint in risk of breast cancer. It is nice to see an article that does not mention mammograms as a preventative measure for breast cancer (it is not in any way, shape or form…). It does relate caloric intake to the risk of breast cancer. Lower caloric intake will result in impaired ovarian function which in turn will lower risk of breast cancer. Remember from previous updates that caloric restriction is the most consistent and predictable way to prolong lifespan. This may be one possible mechanism by which this occurs.

Risk of Knee Ligament Injury Tied to Ovulation

I thought this article was interesting in that it related hormonal fluctuations with risk of ligamentous injuries. The idea that hormones change ligaments is by no means new–relaxin is secreted during pregnancy to allow the pubic symphysis to stretch and allow passage of the newborn through the birth canal. This article, however, suggests that other hormones may have similar characteristics. Consider this…hormones are readily modified by environment. It would be not great stretch to consider environmental impacts on hormonal regulation and subsequent alterations in ligament strength and flexibility. Might this lead to increased aches and pains seen in some chronic diseases such as fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis?

Meeting of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine Ovulation, and possibly oral contraceptive use, may play important roles in women’s risk of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, according to study findings presented at a recent meeting of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine in Keystone, Colorado. Principal investigator Dr. Edward M. Wojtys of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and colleagues evaluated 65 women with ACL injuries and collected urine samples within a day of each woman’s injury to establish the phase of her menstrual cycle. They found that more than 2.5 times the expected number of injuries occurred during ovulation than during other points of the menstrual cycle. Because this pattern emerged only among women who were not on birth control pills, the findings also suggest that oral contraceptive use may provide some measure of protection from the injury, the researchers note. However, lead study author Dr. Wojtys stressed that the findings do not suggest birth control pills offer a way to prevent ACL injuries. “This research does not justify pulling young ladies out of sports or putting young women on oral contraceptives in order to prevent ligament injuries,” Dr. Wojtys, the director of sports medicine at the University of Michigan, said in a statement. “There is some evidence that ACL injuries are tied to the menstrual cycle and probably to hormones,” he added, “but we don’t have enough information yet to justify the use of oral contraceptives in order to prevent ligament injuries.” Studies indicate that female athletes rupture their ACLs up to eight times more often than male athletes do. A number of factors — from differences in musculature and training methods to women’s wider hips — are believed to account for the higher rate of ACL injuries among females. Previous research has also pointed to the role of the menstrual cycle, showing that ACL injuries are more common during ovulation. Estrogen levels are increased during ovulation and some researchers have speculated that hormone fluctuations factor into women’s ACL injury risk. But Dr. Wojtys said this relationship remains unproven. “Even if it is the menstrual cycle that is having some effect on the susceptibility of soft tissue…the susceptibility is not clear,” he said in the statement. “People are jumping to the conclusion that it is estrogen and it is acting at the anterior cruciate ligament, when in fact, there are multiple places where any hormone could act, including muscles, the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system,” Dr. Wojtys added. He suggests further research is needed on how hormones affect ligaments and other soft tissue, as well as how hormones might alter the function of muscles and nerves.

Dairy foods and bone health: examination of the evidence

This is an excellent summary regarding the strong dogmatic belief that milk is good for us. Reading the article carefully, it suggests that, the stronger and more reliable the study, the less likely dairy products were to protect our bones. Now, add in the factor that dairy is a very common allergen and is loaded with hormones, antibiotics and other chemicals, why do so many Westerners insist on its use??

A mystery to whom? Add estrogen-mimicking hormones to the environment (called xenoestrogens), give all sorts of growth-stimulating hormones to cows so they can mass produce milk, increasing rates of obesity (fat cells are a source of estrogen), destroy the GI’s normal flora (certain unfriendly flora unconjugate estrogen in the gut, essentially thumbing their bacterial noses at the liver’s attempt to get rid of the estrogen via the bile) and store everything possibly edible in plastic or vinyl (believed to act as a xenoestrogen) and the “mystery” is solved.

(article) Scientists have known for several years that girls and boys are reaching puberty earlier than in the past, but they still do not know why this is happening, or what the consequences might be, experts said at a forum here Monday sponsored by the Environmental Media Services. A study of 17,000 girls, reported in the journal Pediatrics in 1997, found that the average starting age of puberty among white girls had dipped a year from previous studies, to 9.7 years. African-American girls were found to reach puberty even earlier, at an average age of about 8, according to Dr. Marcia E. Herman-Giddens, the principal investigator and a professor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Data on when puberty starts has been skimpy over the years — especially for African Americans. Still, Dr. Herman-Giddens said at the forum, “I am confident that this trend is a real trend,” adding that adolescence seems to be starting earlier and lasting longer in children worldwide. She is currently analyzing data on US boys. “What we’re seeing is a symptom of a very serious public health problem,” said Dr. Herman-Giddens, noting that the long-term physical and mental health effects of early puberty are not understood. Among the potential causes she mentioned are obesity or overweight, genetics, low birthweight, poor diet, lack of activity, and, surprisingly, an absentee father or a nonrelative male in the house. Scientists have also been exploring whether so-called endocrine disrupters — a group of chemicals thought to interfere with hormonal function — might be spurring or delaying puberty, Dr. Herman-Giddens noted. Dr. John Peterson Myers, director of the W. Alton Jones Foundation and author of a book on chemical contamination and fetal development, said that some of these chemicals have retarded sexual development in rat fetuses. Among the most controversial of these chemicals are phthalate esters, which are found in toys, vinyl flooring, detergents, and cosmetics and lotions. The science is not certain, but there is a plausible link, contends Dr. Myers. On Wednesday the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association released a statement noting that phthalates are widely used and have been favorably reviewed by the US Food and Drug Administration, the US Environmental Protection Agency, “and other scientific bodies in Europe, North America and Japan.” Dr. Diana Zuckerman, executive director of the National Center for Policy research for Women and Families, said that she worries about the psychological impact of early puberty on young girls. She explained that studies have shown that girls who develop at a young age begin dating earlier, have sex sooner, are subject to more psychological stress and behavior problems, and are more likely to drink and smoke. “No matter what they look like, they are still little girls,” she said. Dr. Zuckerman added that early puberty places stress on parents, who have to explain sexuality when their child is young.

Glycemic and insulinemic responses to regular and fermented milk

Gee, yet another reason to avoid dairy? Do we really need another? The high allergenicity, presence of hormones and pesticides and antibiotics are not enough? Now we find that milk has a glycemic index close to that of white bread. When the milk is fermented, such as in yogurt, the glycemic index lowers dramatically. This would put milk into the category as refined sugars and should be avoided in anyone concerned about insulin resistance or diabetes.

Bone turnover markers and sex hormones in men with osteoporosis

There are a few nice take home ideas here. First, the concept that there are tests other then bone densitography studies to assess bone health is clear here. Urine markers of bone metabolism have been used in research for many years to assess the effectiveness of various therapies. These tests are simple and available through many physicians’ offices. Second, I know many men do not like the idea that we have “female” hormones circulating around. Not only is this true (although the levels are very different) but deficiencies can lead to adverse health outcomes. This study found decreased estradiol (one type of estrogen) and increased sex hormone binding globulin-leaving less available testosterone to do its job. A salivary hormone profile is warranted in every male with osteoporosis.

Pharmacological and endogenous progestins induce vascular endothelial growth factor expression in human breast cancer cells

I left the long title for a reason here. At first glance, this article appears to suggest that progesterone produced by the body may increase breast cancer risk. Reading into the article itself arises some very, very important issues. These are related to nomenclature. Progestins are synthetic hormones that have been altered in order to create a patent on the substance. They mimic progesterone but THEY ARE NOT PROGESTERONE. They have been mutated and the body knows the difference. This article does NOT use progesterone–the authors used progestins and then extrapolated the results over to natural progesterone–a very dangerous and unforgivable error. It would be interesting to see if natural progesterone actually did have the same effects. I believe it would not.

Hypothalamo-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis Dysfunction in Chronic Fatigue

It is wonderful to see an article address this aspect of fatigue, whether related to CFS or not. Slowing down of the adrenal cortex, most commonly as a result of the nutrient deprived, high stress Western lifestyle, can lead to fatigue. Adrenal function tests are well accepted and easy to do. Salivary analysis of the free hormones (remember that the “free” ones are the form of hormones that do the work…typical bloodwork looks for the bound hormones, which are non-functional) can give a very good picture of the health of the adrenal cortex. Most studies look for levels of dhea and cortisol. Treatment for hypocortisolism in this study looks to low dose hydrocortisone. However, natural treatments to balance out cortisol levels are also quite common and effective.
