Fertility is actually becoming quite big business in Western medicine and more and more of an issue with patients. If a woman is not fertile, their is something with their physiology that is imbalanced–estrogen dominance, polycystic ovaries, anovulation–that needs to be addressed. The medical approach of forcing ovulation on a system that is NOT ovulating because it is not ready for it just stumps me. Fix the menstrual cycle and fertility should return. I had a friend with poor lifestyle habits, including smoking. She had seen fertility doctors and was contemplating treatment. She finally quit smoking and was pregnant in weeks. With male fertility, external influences seem to be a major player–here we seen xenoestrogens affecting fertility. Want scary? Studies in mice has shown reduction in male fertility 3 generations later when zinc was deficient.

In Utero Estrogen Exposure Linked to Testicular Germ-Cell Cancer

More and more evidence is accumulating that suggests that a fetus’ exposure to chemicals in the womb can have long term effects. Recent studies suggest that maternal exposure to pesticides will increase the risk of a certain type of brain tumor in infants. This exposure to estrogen would include environmental estrogens (xenoestrogens) found as toxins in many foods.

Int J Cancer 2000;87:438-443 Prenatal exposure to maternal hormones, especially estrogen, appears to influence subsequent risk of developing testicular germ-cell cancer, according to researchers in Canada and the US. For instance, exposure to exogenous hormones (pregnancy tests or treatment for near miscarriage), preterm birth and first birth to a young mother were associated with an increased risk of testicular cancer. Maternal smoking during pregnancy (12 cigarettes per day or more), which is believed to have an “anti-estrogen” effect, decreased the risk of cancer. Bleeding or threatened miscarriage also reduced the risk of cancer, but the reason for this association is not yet clear, the investigators write. “Our results support the hypothesis that exposure to maternal hormones, particularly estrogen, is associated with testicular germ-cell cancer risk,” Dr. Weir and colleagues conclude. This link warrants further investigation in more “direct” studies, they believe.

US study highlights high levels of plastic compound in humans

This is an interesting article that brings to light a relatively important but overlooked aspect of health. Many practitioners urge their patients not to use plastic containers and definitely avoid heating anything in plastic containers due to the absorption of the plastics from the container. This absorption is confirmed in this study; with levels showing up in the blood and urine. These plastics are known to have an effect on human health; most notably on hormone levels. Some act as xenoestrogens and are believed to be a contributor to acceleration of puberty in females.

A mystery to whom? Add estrogen-mimicking hormones to the environment (called xenoestrogens), give all sorts of growth-stimulating hormones to cows so they can mass produce milk, increasing rates of obesity (fat cells are a source of estrogen), destroy the GI’s normal flora (certain unfriendly flora unconjugate estrogen in the gut, essentially thumbing their bacterial noses at the liver’s attempt to get rid of the estrogen via the bile) and store everything possibly edible in plastic or vinyl (believed to act as a xenoestrogen) and the “mystery” is solved.

(article) Scientists have known for several years that girls and boys are reaching puberty earlier than in the past, but they still do not know why this is happening, or what the consequences might be, experts said at a forum here Monday sponsored by the Environmental Media Services. A study of 17,000 girls, reported in the journal Pediatrics in 1997, found that the average starting age of puberty among white girls had dipped a year from previous studies, to 9.7 years. African-American girls were found to reach puberty even earlier, at an average age of about 8, according to Dr. Marcia E. Herman-Giddens, the principal investigator and a professor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Data on when puberty starts has been skimpy over the years — especially for African Americans. Still, Dr. Herman-Giddens said at the forum, “I am confident that this trend is a real trend,” adding that adolescence seems to be starting earlier and lasting longer in children worldwide. She is currently analyzing data on US boys. “What we’re seeing is a symptom of a very serious public health problem,” said Dr. Herman-Giddens, noting that the long-term physical and mental health effects of early puberty are not understood. Among the potential causes she mentioned are obesity or overweight, genetics, low birthweight, poor diet, lack of activity, and, surprisingly, an absentee father or a nonrelative male in the house. Scientists have also been exploring whether so-called endocrine disrupters — a group of chemicals thought to interfere with hormonal function — might be spurring or delaying puberty, Dr. Herman-Giddens noted. Dr. John Peterson Myers, director of the W. Alton Jones Foundation and author of a book on chemical contamination and fetal development, said that some of these chemicals have retarded sexual development in rat fetuses. Among the most controversial of these chemicals are phthalate esters, which are found in toys, vinyl flooring, detergents, and cosmetics and lotions. The science is not certain, but there is a plausible link, contends Dr. Myers. On Wednesday the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association released a statement noting that phthalates are widely used and have been favorably reviewed by the US Food and Drug Administration, the US Environmental Protection Agency, “and other scientific bodies in Europe, North America and Japan.” Dr. Diana Zuckerman, executive director of the National Center for Policy research for Women and Families, said that she worries about the psychological impact of early puberty on young girls. She explained that studies have shown that girls who develop at a young age begin dating earlier, have sex sooner, are subject to more psychological stress and behavior problems, and are more likely to drink and smoke. “No matter what they look like, they are still little girls,” she said. Dr. Zuckerman added that early puberty places stress on parents, who have to explain sexuality when their child is young.

Groups Urge FDA Not to Recall Abbott Laboratories’ Synthroid

It’s always interesting to follow a heated debate over what many times appears to be an ineffectual therapy. I have seen many patients whose lab values came back to normal using synthetic hormone replacement, and yet clinically they still had all the signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism. The pharmaceuticals get rich and the patient doesn’t get any better. Thyroid glandulars, nutrients helping the conversion of thyroid hormone to its active form, and removing all sources of xenoestrogens can be a much more powerful approach to managing thyroid problems.

(article) In response to reports that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) might force Abbott Laboratories’ to recall Synthroid (levothyroxine), three professional and patient advocacy groups urged the agency on Monday to defer any action for the sakes of the millions of Americans on the thyroid drug. The American Thyroid Association, The Endocrine Society and Thyroid Cancer Survivor Association expressed concern that the removal will lead to the unnecessary discontinuation of these patients’ prescribed treatment. About two thirds of the 13 million Americans with hypothyroidism, thyroid cancer and other thyroid conditions are on this third most commonly prescribed drug in the US, the organizations noted. Therefore, “Even the threat of an interruption could cause alarm, inconvenience, and cost for patients who are doing well on their current thyroid medication,” said Dr. Paul Ladenson, secretary of the American Thyroid Association. Despite this appeal, the future of Synthroid remains uncertain. In April, the FDA told Abbott Laboratories that its thyroid medicine Synthroid has a “history of problems” and cannot be “generally recognized as safe and effective.” The FDA’s concerns were expressed in a letter, rejecting an Abbott petition to have the compound approved without the filing of a new drug application (NDA) detailing the drugs safety and effectiveness. Abbott, who acquired Synthroid’s maker earlier this year, is now expected to submit an application to the agency by the FDA’s August deadline. However, the FDA’s statements still raise the possibility that the popular 40-year-old drug could be removed from the market. The agency previously has refused to rule out asking for the drug’s withdrawal, saying it believes there are two other drugs in Synthroid’s class that could fill the void. Earlier this year, King Pharmaceuticals and Watson Pharmaceuticals secured FDA approval for similar products. But Abbott maintains that it is confident the drug will be allowed to stay on the market. The safety and efficacy of Synthroid has been extensively studied and validated, the company said in a prepared statement. The results of these studies have also been published in prominent peer-reviewed journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, the drugmaker noted.

Estrogenic chemicals in plastic and oral contraceptives disrupt development of the fetal mouse prostate and urethra

The amount of evidence mounting on the potential negative effects of certain lifestyles and chemical exposure in utero is becoming quite long.  While this is a mouse study, it does begin to indicate that certain xenoestrogens exposed to the developing fetus may predispose to prostate problems much later in life.
