VITAMIN D INTAKE FROM TANNING AND BONE DENSITY – (12-15-04)

October 8, 2012 by James Bogash

TANNING IS ASSOCIATED WITH OPTIMAL VITAMIN D STATUS (SERUM 25-HYDROXYVITAMIN D CONCENTRATION) AND HIGHER BONE MINERAL DENSITY

As I’ve said before, sunlight has gotten a bad rap over the past ten years or so, and yet moderate sunlight exposure has tremendous protective benefits from the increase in Vit D production. The term “vitamin” for D is actually misleading…vitamins help enzymes do their job by acting as co-factors. Hormones, on the other hand, affect the well a cell expresses it’s DNA. Vitamin D acts as a hormone and every cell in the body has a receptor for this compound, with an incredibly long list of beneficial effects.

PRENATAL ANXIETY CREATES HEALTH DIFFERENCES – (09-06-05)

July 30, 2012 by James Bogash

Prenatal Anxiety Predicts Differences in Cortisol in Pre-Adolescent Children

The implications for this are staggering.  Consider a few scenarios:  pregnant mother told antidepressants are okay in the 3rd trimester, a pregnant mother under abnormal levels of stress, or an insulin resistant mother with abnormally high levels of cortisol.  All of these scenarios lead to differing levels of neurotransmitters in the bloodstream.  The developing fetus is bathed in these hormones.

So, take the antidepressants–the developing fetus becomes used to abnormally high effectiveness of serotonin.  Baby gets born, no more drugs and their brain now detects a serotonin deficiency, even though their is no true physiological deficit.  Run the same scenario for a stressed out mom with high cortisol levels.  Not a good situation for the child, and this is one of the reasons I am a little pessimistic about our future generations’ risk of chronic diseases.  I think we have yet to have scratched the surface of chronic diseases and shortened lifespans.

DAIRY CONTRIBUTES LESS TO WEIGHT MANAGEMENT – (12-3-07)

April 21, 2012 by James Bogash

Is higher dairy consumption associated with lower body weight and fewer metabolic disturbances?

In public health circles, the devotion to dairy is almost godlike. Try to find ANY kind of public health recommendation that doesn’t include daily dairy servings. The problem is, there is very little strong research to actually support these recommendations, and plenty of reasons not to. There has been much blame on childhood obesity on the switch away from milk to soft drinks.

However, we see in this study that dairy has very little ability to help manage weight, and this was at 4.1 servings / day. Combine this with the hormones, antibiotics and allergy potential, and it really has no right being on the ranks of every public health recommendation.
