Severe nutritional Deficiencies in Toddlers Resulting From Health Food Milk Alternatives – (05-03-01)

Severe nutritional Deficiencies in Toddlers Resulting From Health Food Milk Alternatives

I left the title exactly as is to illustrate a point. In reading this title (which is ALL many practitioners will do) many would gather that milk alternatives can lead to life-threatening conditions. Better to just stick with dairy. Right? Wrong. In reading the article, we find two case studies. The first is a case of kwashiorkor’s disease in a patient who happened to be using rice milk. Read the report. The diet taken in by the infant was very poor and imbalanced and This is what resulted in the condition, not the milk alternative. The second case study involves rickets in an infant using a milk alternative that was not fortified with Vit D. This was a poor choice by the parent, but hardly a reason to demonized the milk substitute. Many dairy products are not fortified with Vit D either. As an aside, read the responses to this article.

Hypovitaminosis D associated with insulin resistance and beta cell dysfunction – (06-01-04)

Hypovitaminosis D associated with insulin resistance and beta cell dysfunction

The authors state that the relationship between Vit D and diabetes is well recognized, but this is the first I’ve heard of this relationship. Vit D (in it’s active form 25-hydroxyvitamin D) has been all over the medical literature in the past few months. What I do know, is that sunlight exposure has gotten such a bad rap in the past few years because of the increase in skin cancer. So people are staying out of the sun and wearing sunblock. I’m not saying to go bake for 3 hours in the AZ sun with baby oil on, but 10-15 minutes a day of good strong sunshine is part of a healthy lifestyle.

Serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D are a good marker of Vitamin D – (03-29-04)

Severe Hypovitaminosis D in Patients with Persistant, Non-Specific Musculoskeletal Pain

I must admit that an article like this really does open up my eyes. I know that osteomalacia (softening of the bones) can present as generalized pain, but this is not something that I routinely check for in my office.

The results of this article are definitely eye-opening. Receptors for Vit D are found on every cell of the body, which means that Vit D has functions in all cells, most of which have not yet been identified. Serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D are easily checked and are a good marker of Vitamin D status.

PREFER VITAMIN D3 OVER VITAMIN D2 – (11-21-04)

October 14, 2012 by James Bogash

Vitamin D2 Is Much Less Effective than Vitamin D3 in Humans

Given the literal explosion of Vit D research over the past few years, this information is of great importance. Many of the lower quality multivitamins contain the D2 form of Vit D which (ergocalciferol=D2, cholecalciferol=D3) in this study was about 1/3 as potent and its effect was much shorter. Yet another reason why spending a little extra money on a good quality multi is not just “making expensive urine.”

VITAMIN D INTAKE FROM TANNING AND BONE DENSITY – (12-15-04)

October 8, 2012 by James Bogash

TANNING IS ASSOCIATED WITH OPTIMAL VITAMIN D STATUS (SERUM 25-HYDROXYVITAMIN D CONCENTRATION) AND HIGHER BONE MINERAL DENSITY

As I’ve said before, sunlight has gotten a bad rap over the past ten years or so, and yet moderate sunlight exposure has tremendous protective benefits from the increase in Vit D production. The term “vitamin” for D is actually misleading…vitamins help enzymes do their job by acting as co-factors. Hormones, on the other hand, affect the well a cell expresses it’s DNA. Vitamin D acts as a hormone and every cell in the body has a receptor for this compound, with an incredibly long list of beneficial effects.

HOW TO PREVENT FLU DEATHS? – (12-12-05)

September 8, 2012 by James Bogash

Are US flu death figures more PR than science?

And, for those of you who believes the fear-mongering, this article is a must read. In 2001, the CDC announced some 62,000 deaths attributed to influenza and pneumonia (which they conveniently lump together). Unfortunately, according to the CDC’s own number, the actual confirmed deaths from the flu we a little less–18. How’s that for hype? How about a little effort towards boosting immunity so those with the flu do not progress to something more severe? Avoiding refined carbs, exercise, more vitamin C, D and A, etc… would give us a heck of alot more bang for our buck than flu shots.

BONE LOSS MAY LEAD TO INCREASED RELEASE OF SUBSTANCE P AND TNF-ALPHA – (01-14-04)

August 22, 2012 by James Bogash

Bone Loss Induced by Magnesium Reduction to 10% of Nutrient Requirement in Rats Associated with Increased Release of Substance P and TNF-alpha

Sorry for the long title, but there are two lessons here. First, osteroporosis, despite what you may believe from the dairy advertising, is not all about calcium. There are many other factors such as Vit D and magnesium that go into bone health. It is a disease of lifestyle and magnesium depletion may be one facet that osteoporotic patients are affected by. Second, magnesium deficiency resulted in up regulation of the immune system via TNF-alpha. So, you can take from this that magnesium may help lower overall inflammatory burden, or you can see how inflammation also plays a role in osteoporosis just like every other chronic disease it partakes in…

VIT D LOWERS THE RISK OF FRACTURE – (04-24-06)

August 11, 2012 by James Bogash

Effect of Cholecalciferol Plus Calcium on Falling in Ambulatory Older Men and Women

Wow. We are really just starting to understand the full impact that Vit D has on our health. In this study, confirming many other studies before it, the authors find that Vit D supplementation at 700 IU/day (a pretty low dose) has a 46% reduction in the number of falls. And, given that Vit D is essential to bone health, the likelihood that this same Vit D will lower the risk of fracture is great as well.
