LOWER SERUM VITAMIN D LED TO INCREASED STRESS FRACTURES RISK- (12-27-06)

July 30, 2012 by James Bogash

Association Between Serum 25(OH)D Concentrations and Bone Stress Fractures in Finnish Young Men

I think the most interesting thing in this study was the OR–lower serum Vit D levels led to an increase in risk for stress fractures by 3.6 times.  And in a relatively young population that we would not normally think of bone health/Vit D as being of concern.  So add Vit D supplementation to any patients that have stress fractures and shin splints that just won’t heal from anything else.

ANTI-AGING SKIN EFFECTS OF FISH OILS ON HUMAN SKIN – (07-17-06)

July 30, 2012 by James Bogash

Photoprotective and anti-skin-aging effects of eicosapentaenoic acid in human skin in vivo

I feel that our fear-mongering with sunlight exposure and skin cancer has done more harm than good (as usual…). Instead of focusing on rational sun exposure and the implications that a poor quality diet can increase the risk for skin cancers, we tell people to slap on SPF 75 to walk to the car. The result? Still no focus on the fault of low intakes of healthier fats on the increase in melanoma in kids (do you think today’s kids get more or less sun exposure??) and endemic levels of Vit D deficiency.

This article again supports the concepts that healthy fats have a large contribution to the general health of our skin.

BONE LOSS IN OLDER DIABETIC ADULTS – (12-27-06)

July 30, 2012 by James Bogash

Thiazolidinedione Use and Bone Loss in Older Diabetic Adults

Avandia and Actose are a class of diabetic drugs known as TZDs that act on the PPAR gamma receptor.  Unfortunately, like every other drug out there, they have some long lists of side effects.

This particular study looks at the bone damaging effect of these drugs.  Interestingly, while sticking with the near-Vitamin-D-worship status of this Updates, Vit D not only protects bones but also helps manage insulin resistance, a precursor to diabetes.  You can also add exercise to that list as well.  So basically, the approaches we should be taking that involve diet and lifestyle will lower the risk of diabetes while protecting the bones.  This class of drugs, however, actually contributes to more bone loss the longer you’re on them. Would SEEM like a no-brainer, huh?

VITAMIN D LOWERS RISK OF PANCREATIC CANCER – (12-27-06)

July 30, 2012 by James Bogash

Vitamin D Intake and the Risk for Pancreatic Cancer in Two Cohort Studies.

Aw heck…I thought I’d begin and end this Update with more info on the importance of Vit D.  And to add hear–pancreatic cancer is a great killer.  We just don’t get 5 year survival rates with pancreatic cancer.  With all the research showing strong protection of Vit D on several types of cancer, I am waiting for the American Cancer Society to come out with recommendations to increase Vit D intake.  They wouldn’t even notice this drop in the bucket for prevention within that massive budget devoted to “finding a cure….”

OSTEOPOROSIS, A DISEASE OF LIFESTYLE – (06-20-05)

July 8, 2012 by James Bogash

Vit D Inadequacy in Postmenopausal Women Receiving Osteoporosis Therapy

Vit D is one of those compounds (it is actually a hormone–not a vitamin) that is receiving much attention in the research lately.  More and more researchers are starting to scream that our society is extremely Vit D deficient, largely at the fault of our irrational fear of the sun.  I get questions about how to help fight osteoporosis all the time, and I always reply that osteoporosis is a disease of lifestyle–NOT a calcium deficiency disease.

It needs to be approached from many angles–diet (plant based vs animal based), calcium supplementation along with other minerals known to positively affect bone, exercise and Vit D.  It appears that my approach is not favored, and that the multi-pronged approach is not as favorable as just giving a drug and ignoring Vit D…

MELATONIN-CYTOKINE MAY CAUSE RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS – (07-25-05)

July 8, 2012 by James Bogash

The melatonin-cytokine connection in rheumatoid arthritis

I must say that this one caught my eye.  There has been much research lately into how much melatonin protects the brain from oxidative stress, but like any natural compound, there is a potential downside.  Melatonin has an ability to up-regulate the immune system.  While this may be a good thing for someone with a suppressed immune system, it may be a bad thing for someone with a Th1 dominated autoimmune condition–in this article rheumatoid arthritis.

I know that I, for one, will no longer recommend melatonin if there is any concern for autoimmune conditions.  Interesting to note, though, is the vit D, sunlight and melatonin connection.  Sunlight suppresses melatonin production and stimulates vit D production.  Might this interaction somewhere play a role as well?  Picture today’s typical office job–indoors most of the day with little vit D production (which is known to protect against some autoimmune disorders) and maybe elevated melatonin levels at inappropriate times of the day.  This may be a recipe for disaster.

HOW TO IMPROVE SKIN CONDITION IN WOMEN – (08-28-06)

June 25, 2012 by James Bogash

Long-Term Ingestion of High Flavanol Cocoa Provides Photoprotection against UV-Induced Erythema and Improves Skin Condition in Women.

It’s studies like this that lends more credence to the idea that increased rates of melanoma in our kids are NOT coming from increased sun exposure but rather from poorer nutritional support from within. There have also been studies that found that olive oil on the skin has a protective role against cancer as well. So, instead of taking a rational approach to sun exposure, we play the fear game and now we’re paying the price in the opposite direction resulting in upwards of 75% of the population being deficient in Vit D.

VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY IS DUE TO UNREASONABLE FEAR OF THE SUN – (05-01-05)

May 6, 2012 by James Bogash

Hydroxytyrosol, a natural antioxidant from olive oil, prevents protein damage induced by long-wave ultraviolet radiation in melanoma cells

I still contend that the increase in melanoma rates in our kids are not from increased sun exposure, but rather from reduced intake of compounds that may protect us from sun damage and cancer formation.  It is estimated that as high as 75% of the population is vit D deficient, and the unreasonable fear of the sun is contributing to this extreme deficiency numbers.
