Osteoporosis and Fractures in Postmenopausal Women Using Estrogen – (12-05-02)

March 26, 2013 by James Bogash

Osteoporosis, Fractures in Postmenopausal Women Using Estrogen

The house of cards is certainly coming down. Here we see a ten year study on ERT use and risk of fractures. Basically, the results do show ERT users as “somewhat” better protected. “Somewhat??” Increased risk of breast and endometrial cancer and heart disease and all we get is “somewhat” better protected? And, for those of you into research statistics, the p value was only .05 (the p value is an indicator of how likely these results were due to pure chance and not a protective effect). A p value of .05 is not really anything to brag about.

Effect of Estrogen Plus Progestin on Stroke in Postmenopausal Women

Ditto on the above with an increased risk of ischemic stroke. Hey, this isn’t me making this stuff up just to make it look bad!!

HRT LOWERS RISK OF HEART DISEASE AND HOT FLASHES – (04-22-02)

November 16, 2012 by James Bogash

HRT Falls Out of Favor With Expert Committee.

Let me get this straight… Years of prescribing HRT for women in the peri and postmenopausal periods to lower risk of heart disease, osteoporosis and hot flashes based on basically shoddy research; current research showing lack of efficacy and additional studies showing downright increased risk of adverse effects such as cancer… And we need an “expert” committee to say this ain’t such a great idea??

BENEFITS OF INTENSE EXERCISE ON BONE DENSITY AND PHYSICAL FITNESS – (07-16-04)

Benefits of 2 Years of Intense Exercise on Bone Density, Physical Fitness, and Blood Lipids in Early Postmenopausal Osteopenic Women

While this study does kind of fall into the “how much did we pay for this??” category, the numbers found are interesting. And considering that in the last Updates, there was an article about biphosphonates NOT fixing microtrauma damage (the repair of which would occur in this current study and produce, in my opinion, a stronger bone), the percentage increase in bone density was pretty substantial. The increases in other indexes of health (muscle strength, triglycerides…) were also pretty impressive. Arch Intern Med — Abstracts: Kemmler et al. 164 (10): 1084 –

SOY INTAKE IS PROTECTIVE FOR THE BONE – (05-15-06)

August 7, 2012 by James Bogash

Cooperative effects of isoflavones and exercise on bone and lipid metabolism in postmenopausal Japanese women

The study strongly illustrates the brilliant orchestra that is our physiology and how, unless researchers understand this dynamic, the wrong message can make it to the public. The isoflavones in soy have been found to be protective for bone, but not in every study. As it turns out, the isoflavones in soy have to been acted on the correct bacteria in the gut to produce equol. Equol is the compound that has consistently been found to protect bone. So, while soy may be protective to bone, this benefit may be reduced in those patients who have ever been on antibiotics or have a disturbed bacterial flora.

OSTEOPOROSIS, A DISEASE OF LIFESTYLE – (06-20-05)

Vit D Inadequacy in Postmenopausal Women Receiving Osteoporosis Therapy

Vit D is one of those compounds (it is actually a hormone–not a vitamin) that is receiving much attention in the research lately.  More and more researchers are starting to scream that our society is extremely Vit D deficient, largely at the fault of our irrational fear of the sun.  I get questions about how to help fight osteoporosis all the time, and I always reply that osteoporosis is a disease of lifestyle–NOT a calcium deficiency disease.

It needs to be approached from many angles–diet (plant based vs animal based), calcium supplementation along with other minerals known to positively affect bone, exercise and Vit D.  It appears that my approach is not favored, and that the multi-pronged approach is not as favorable as just giving a drug and ignoring Vit D…
