Bacterial Regulation of Epithelial Responses – (10-05-00)

June 20, 2013 by James Bogash

Bacterial Regulation of Epithelial Responses

This is another article presenting evidence that beneficial bacteria can help reduce inflammation in the GI tract. It’s a little technical, but the take home message is that this is a separate route or method of reducing inflammation. Different bacteria have different routes, and when working in concert, can have a significant effect on reducing inflammation in the GI tract and the rest of the body.

Exposure to Soy-Based Formula in Infancy – (11-26-01)

June 20, 2013 by James Bogash

Exposure to Soy-Based Formula in Infancy

When it comes to infant feeding breastfeeding for at least 6 months is unquestionably the best. Unfortunately this is not common and the infant is moved to formula too early. At this point we have an immature immune system being bombarded with foreign proteins via the GI tract. I don’t care what type of formula is offered–dairy, soy, goat…the risk of sensitization is high. The developing immune system just cannot handle it. If breastfeeding cannot be continued (and many times it is discontinued inappropriately because of some GI or skin complaint in the infant that is really related to the modifiable maternal diet and NOT the breastfeeding itself) than a hydrolyzed formula that has already undergone significant protein degradation is the best option. Less proteins for the infant to react to.

Campylo enteritis, post-dysenteric IBS and increased gut permeability – (12-07-00)

June 17, 2013 by James Bogash

Campylo enteritis, post-dysenteric IBS and increased gut permeability

There is an important message to take home from this article. The damage inflicted on the GI tract following infection can persist beyond one year. I have talked with a GI specialist and an infectious disease specialist that refused to believe that an infection in the GI tract could have long term effects. This idea that the body comes back to homeostasis is WRONG. If we can accept that these changes become ingrained, then we can begin to treat the altered permeability and upregulated immune cells.

Red Wine, Black Tea Polyphenols Modulate Expression of COX-2 – (06-10-02)

June 14, 2013 by James Bogash

Red Wine, Black Tea Polyphenols Modulate Expression of COX-2

Geez–billions of dollars spent on developing and creating the market for a selective COX-2 inhibitor (quite an interesting tale if you follow Mansanto’s “public health” info on the dangers of non-selective COX inhibitors) when we’ve had several compounds that seem to do the same thing already in own kitchen cabinets. Oops…I forgot that you can’t patent and make gobs of money off of wine and tea. This study mainly focuses on the potential anti-cancer abilities of inhibiting certain enzyme systems in the GI tract.

Probiotics: effects on immunity – (02-05-01)

May 12, 2013 by James Bogash

Probiotics: effects on immunity

Once we finally accept that the GI tract has a strong ability to modulate the response of the immune system throughout the entire body, then using probiotics to help boost immune function becomes an entirely rational therapeutic avenue. And remember…antibiotics will kill off these normal, protective flora. Could it be shown in the years to come that antibiotics actually lower our immune response?

Evidence Assessment of Management of Acute Otitis Media – (08-13-01)

May 5, 2013 by James Bogash

Evidence Assessment of Management of Acute Otitis Media

I’m not going to go into this in more detail, but I do want to once again stress that antibiotic resistance is really only a minor complication of antibiotic miss use.  Consider the long term chronic effects that destroying the normal flora has on overall health. Alterations in the GI tract can lead to a host of quality of life-destroying illness, potentially including allergies, asthma, Crohn’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis and most all autoimmune conditions. Consider that next time you’re given an antibiotic for a condition that will clear up just as quickly without it.

Chronic stress can have some serious, negative, long term side effects – (03-29-04)

December 30, 2012 by James Bogash

Increased antigen and bacterial uptake in follicle associated epithelium induced by chronic psychological stress in rats

Okay, so we’re not all rats. But this does suggest, and common sense will tell you, that chronic stress can have some serious, negative, long term side effects.

In this study, the altered GI permeability will result in stuff getting past the GI tract into the body that should never get in. Now the immune system and liver have to deal with these invaders, and many times the liver is already overloaded from our chemical-laden lifestyles.

STUDY THE SUBLINGUAL IMMUNOTHERAPY FOR RESPIRATORY ALLERGY – (10-13-04)

October 11, 2012 by James Bogash

Randomized controlled open study of sublingual immunotherapy for respiratory allergy in real-life: clinical efficacy and more

While we’re on the subject…another safe approach to respiratory problems is sublingual immunotherapy. This concept works by inducing oral tolerance via the immune system in the GI tract–the immune system cells lining the GI tract identify the compound being given sublingually, and then send a signal out to the rest of the body that this compound is NOT an invader, thereby lowering the immune response all throughout the body, including the respiratory tract. Randomized controlled open study of sublingual immunotherapy for respiratory allergy in real-life: clinical efficacy and more.
