Microbial Metabolites from Gut Account for a Major Fraction of Polyphenols Excreted in Urine of Rats Fed Red Wine Polyphenols – (02-10-03)

Microbial Metabolites from Gut Account for a Major Fraction of Polyphenols Excreted in Urine of Rats Fed Red Wine Polyphenols

Sorry for the long title. This article points reminds us of how important our bacterial flora in our guts are. In this rat study, the researchers found that the bacterial breakdown of polyphenols (beneficial compounds for in such items as grape juice) produces some of the active compounds. There are two things to consider here. First, studies that look at whether red wine benefits health may show stronger benefits if we also controlled for other factors-in this case colonic flora. Second, this just draws further concern on the widespread antibiotic use and the potential long term negative effects (or at least loss of a positive effect).

Cocoa inhibits platelet activation and function – (08-03-00)

October 29, 2013 by James Bogash

Cocoa inhibits platelet activation and function

Cocoa contains polyphenols–those beneficial chemicals also found in green tea that are believed to account for its benefits. This may be a safer way to prevent heart attacks instead of “an aspirin a day.” Now, don’t confuse this with chocolate, which contains stearic acid and has definite bad effects on human health.

Cocoa and dark chocolate on LDL oxidative susceptibility – (11-08-01)

Cocoa and dark chocolate on LDL oxidative susceptibility

Great news for chocalate lovers!! It does appear that the polyphenols in chocolate do have some protective effects. However, this article does not take into effect the affect of stearic acid in the chocolate that are believed to have adverse effects of lipids.

Red Wine, Black Tea Polyphenols Modulate Expression of COX-2 – (06-10-02)

Red Wine, Black Tea Polyphenols Modulate Expression of COX-2

Geez–billions of dollars spent on developing and creating the market for a selective COX-2 inhibitor (quite an interesting tale if you follow Mansanto’s “public health” info on the dangers of non-selective COX inhibitors) when we’ve had several compounds that seem to do the same thing already in own kitchen cabinets. Oops…I forgot that you can’t patent and make gobs of money off of wine and tea. This study mainly focuses on the potential anti-cancer abilities of inhibiting certain enzyme systems in the GI tract.

Intakes of Antioxidants in Coffee, Wine, and Vegetables – (03-01-04)

Intakes of Antioxidants in Coffee, Wine, and Vegetables Are Correlated with Plasma Carotenoids

Coffee was found to have contribute the highest levels of dietary antioxidants in this study was coffee. Now, the author does not describe just how much coffee the study participants took in, but this still goes to show that some things just get a bad rap without having done anything bad (kindof like the minivan…). However, I might add that Starbucks’ iced white chocolate mocha is probably not loading with these same polyphenols as fresh brewed straight-up coffee. The same goes for tea brewed at home versus those teas found in bottles and drink dispensers at the local convenience store.

Polyphenols inhibit pancreatic cancer growth

I realize that, to some of you, this seems like old news (and it is…). For those of you new to Updates, fruits and veggies contain literally thousands of substances we have not even identified yet that protect us from just about every disease on the planet…

COFFEE MODIFIES GI HORMONE EXCRETION AND GLUCOSE TOLERANCE – (10-15-03)

September 30, 2012 by James Bogash

Coffee acutely modifies GI hormone secretion and glucose tolerance: glycemic effects of chlorogenic acid and caffeine. For me, coffee falls into the “everything in moderation” category (incidently, broccoli and other veggies from the brassica family are not in the moderation category–overindulge). What I do have a problem with is coffee drinkers who cannot function until their fifth gallon of coffee–these people usually have adrenal insufficiency that they are trying to override with super-physiologic doses of caffeine. For everyone else, coffee has shown to have benefits from their polyphenols.

JUST HOW GOOD IS CHOCOLATE FOR YOU?

January 24, 2012 by James Bogash

JUST HOW GOOD IS CHOCOLATE FOR YOU?  By now it should come as no surprise, but sometimes the numbers still surprise me.  In this study, researchers found that those with the highest chocolate consumption had a 39% lower risk of stroke and heart attack.  Even more powerful is the fact that, when looking deeper into the data, the people eating more chocolate had lower intakes of fruits and veggies.  So, despite the less healthy lifestyles, the polyphenols in the chocolate were still strong enough to outperform every drug on the planet.

Now imagine if this was done on dark chocolate covered nuts in the context of a healthy lifestyle???  The bottom line is that higher intakes of polyphenols (non-GMO soy, tea, coffee, esspreso, chocolate, red juice / wine) have consistently shown protection against a variety of chronic diseases.  Check out.
