Endothelial Dysfunction

Insulin Causes Endothelial Dysfunction in Humans – (02-11-02)

March 3, 2013 by James Bogash

Insulin Causes Endothelial Dysfunction in Humans

Mark this one down…this is another article in the developing saga of the relationship between hyperinsulinemia and hypertension. Many doctors focus on salt reduction in hypertensive patients, and yet education about whole grains vs refined carbs may be time better spent…

Black Tea and Coronary Heart Disease – (07-12-01)

Black Tea Reverses Endothelial Dysfunction in Coronary Artery Disease

I don’t remember seeing tea on Dr. Dean Ornish’s program to reverse heart disease, but maybe it should be added! Remember that the flavonoids present in tea have shown many other beneficial effects as well, ranging from anticancer to antidiabetic properties. This study was done only on black tea, but typically, whatever black tea does, green tea does better. If it hasn’t been already, tea should be replacing all the soft drinks and coffee in everyone’s lifestyle itinerary.

Effect of a Mediterranean-Style Diet on Endothelial Dysfunction and Markers of Vascular Inflammation in the Metabolic Syndrome

Same concept here applied to insulin resistance and endothelial dysfunction (the lining of blood vessels..).

INSULIN RESISTANCE RESULTS IN HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE – (09-01-03)

September 30, 2012 by James Bogash

Endothelial Dysfunction Induced by Hyperhomocyst(e)inemia–Role of Asymmetric Dimethylarginine

We’ve come across asymmetrical dimethylarginine (ADMA) previously. Basically, nitric oxide is a small molecule that has many functions, one of which is dilation of blood vessels to increase blood flow (ala nitroglycerin tablets, Viagra…). ADMA is nitric oxide’s arch enemy–the more ADMA, the less effective nitric oxide can be.

We are finding that insulin resistance disables the enzyme that breads down ADMA, effectively raising levels of ADMA and inhibiting nitric oxide vasodilation. The result?? High blood pressure.

OXIDATIVE STRESS MAY RESULT IN CORONARY ARTERY AND ATHEROGENIC DISEASE – (10-04-04)

September 23, 2012 by James Bogash

Oxidative stress and its association with coronary artery disease and different atherogenic risk factors

A good article, but I have to take issue with the first line of the abstract…”It is well known that free radicals contribute to endothelial dysfunction and are involved in the pathogenesis and development of cardiovascular diseases, such as atherosclerosis.” Well known? Certainly not by mainstream medicine. All cynycism aside, this article takes a not-too-often approach to the antioxidant benefit. They measured an overall “total antioxidant power” inside of measuring just levels of one antioxidant such as C or E. There is no one antioxidant that we can load up on and achieve all of the benefits of lowered oxidative stress. Rather, the protection is more of a summation of the intake of a wide variety of antioxidants from our diets.
