SOY BENEFITS HELPS TO INCREASE BONE DENSITY – (01-26-08)

March 18, 2012 by James Bogash

Effects of Phytoestrogen Genistein on Bone Metabolism in Osteopenic Postmenopausal Women

It still surprises me to hear such a strong anti-soy sentiment out there. Clearly, heavy, repeated exposure to any food antigen can lead to sensitivity, but the consistent research supporting the benefits of soy constituents makes any argument against soy sound weak.

This study finds the genistein compound from soy helping to increase bone density. However, as with any natural approach, improving bone density is multifactorial. Strong vit D status, calcium, a alkaline diet, exercise, whole body vibration. All these add up to increasing bone density. Sadly, many patients coming through my office are put on anti-resorptive therapy like Fosamax, but the lifestyle recommends rarely exceed “take Tums…”

POSITIVE HEALTH BENEFITS OF SOY DECREASES RISK OF PROSTATE CANCER – (02-04-08)

March 18, 2012 by James Bogash

Dietary Isoflavones May Protect against Prostate Cancer in Japanese Men

There are no shortage of websites out there touting that soy is killing us all, causing infertility, breast cancer, thyroid cancer and mineral deficiencies. The research just doesn’t match all this fear. While allergy is a concern, I feel it’s more from overdosing infants with soy-based formulas then anything else.

Here we have yet another study finding positive health benefits of soy, with men with the highest levels of isoflavones in the blood having a whopping 58% decreased risk of prostate cancer in Japanese men when compared to men with the lowest. Now, there are other things to consider here. Not only is the intake of soy products important, but we have to have the right type of bacterial flora in the gut to convert the isoflavones in soy to their more potent counterparts–the aglycone form. So antibiotic use could drastically alter the protective effect of soy on risk of prostate cancer. So…next time your PCP gives you that antibiotic prescription for a viral infection, ask how this is going to alter your risk of prostate cancer by destruction of normal flora.

ASSOCIATION OF DIETARY INTAKE OF SOY, BEANS, AND ISOFLAVONES – (08-04-08)

February 29, 2012 by James Bogash

Association of Dietary Intake of Soy, Beans, and Isoflavones With Risk of Cerebral and Myocardial Infarctions in Japanese Populations.

As I’ve mentioned before, there is no shortage of “deadly soy” articles all over the internet. Unfortunately, this just does NOT agree with the medical literature. Again, in this study we see some very drastic reductions for women in heart attacks and strokes with higher intakes of soy. With soy intakes greater than 5 times per week, the reduction in stroke risk was 36%, heart attacks 45% and for cardiac death 69%.These are massive reductions.

Compare this to the statin class of drugs, with huge costs and serious side effects, and NO reduction in cardiac mortality. It is also likely that the intake of soy in this study really correlates with the adoption of a more plant-based diet.

DO YOU KNOW THAT SOY PROTECTS AGAINST BREAST CANCER RISK? – (03-08-10)

February 25, 2012 by James Bogash

Adolescent and adult soy food intake and breast cancer risk

Ok…another article talking about the benefits of soy. And trust me when I say it’s not alone–the positive research on soy is strong. So why do we continue to see this demonization of soy on the internet? I can only think that some group with lots and lots of money is contributing to these anti-soy websites. Of course, we are talking about non-GMO soy and taken in unprocessed forms (tofu, soy milk, edamame–NOT veggie burgers).

In this particular study, the evidence of soy protecting against breast cancer is strong, especially when used as an adolescent (greater than 59% reductions). Where are the Susan Komen and the American Cancer Society on this? Do we really have to wait until the evidence suggesting its protectiveness is so massive that we can no longer deny it in good conscious?

HOW DANGEROUS SOY IS FOR OUR HEALTH -(05-04-09)

February 7, 2012 by James Bogash

Effect of Soy Nuts on Adhesion Molecules and Markers of Inflammation in Hypertensive and Normotensive Postmenopausal Women

Here’s another one of those article talking about how dangerous that deadly soy is. Seriously though, I remain confused as to how many websites talk about how dangerous soy is for our health, and yet, from a research standpoint, the outcomes are overwhelmingly positive.

This particular study adds further weight to the positive evidence, finding that the addition of soy nuts resulted in improvement in markers of the health of our blood vessels. Keep in mind that, when we talk about soy we are NOT talking about veggie burgers and tofu hot dogs and tofu turkey, but rather less processed forms of soy like soy nuts, soy milk and tofu.

WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF CHILDHOOD SOY INTAKE?

January 31, 2012 by James Bogash

Childhood Soy Intake and Breast Cancer Risk in Asian American Women

For some odd reason, soy has truly been demonized in this country.  We think it will grow breast on your boys and give women breast cancer in a week.  The evidence is overwhelmingly saying the opposite.

This article not only supports soy, but again reinforces the idea that things we do to ourselves in childhood will have long reaching effects later in life.  Look at these results–a whopping 60% lower risk of breast cancer!!  It is likely that soy intake in childhood sets up the guy flora to properly metabolize the flavonoids in soy to their equol products.

I do have to clarify that I am NOT a fan of processed soy products (tofu burgers, hot dogs, sausages, etc…) but in favor of things like tofu, soy milk or edamame.

SOY IS EVIL, BUT NOT SOLUBLE FIBER

January 19, 2012 by James Bogash

SOY IS EVIL, BUT NOT WITH SOLUBLE FIBER.  Funny how the first 20 or so websites that come up when you search for soy are all based around the fact that even sitting in the same room can be deadly.  Of course, this is flying in the face of heavily dominant soy-positive medical literature.  But of course, this is non-GMO, non processed soy (no veggie burgers or Tofurky).

One of the things anti-soy people talk about is the “anti-nutrients” in soy such as phytic acid and that phytic acid attaches to minerals and keeps them from being absorbed.  Well, so does tea and flaxseed, but you don’t see website after website demonizing them.  Anyway, in this study, the authors find that fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) such as those in soluble fiber actually help with mineral absorption and counteract the “anti-nutrient” effect of soy.  So, shockingly, a healthy diet containing soluble fiber and soy would actually have an overall very positive effect.  Who would’ve thunk it?

HOW TO DROP COLON CANCER RATES?

November 21, 2011 by James Bogash

Dropping colon cancer rates AGAIN? You’re now taking Vit D to drop your risk 45% or so. Increasing intake of soy for women can drop it another 21%. I know soy’s gotten a bad rap, but I can’t figure out why. The research is VERY strongly in support of soy.  However, this is REAL soy, not the processed junk (NO veggie burgers, soy dogs, Tofurky..).  Keep in mind that it is not just the soy, but the presence of health bacteria in the gut that produces some of the strongest benefits of soy.

So it is likely that things like antiobiotics will prevent soy from exerting it’s strongest protective benefits. But do the math…we’re practically eliminating colon cancer here!!  Where are the front page headlines?
