Allergy Induced Asthma Treatment Plans: 3 Things to Avoid

August 6, 2012 by James Bogash

Asthma treatment plans seem to include only medications.  However, what if you could identify household items that contribute to allergy induced asthma?

It seems all too common for toddlers, elementary school kids and teens to be dealing with asthma and allergies.  Both of these conditions are created when the Th2 arm of the immune system (specifically our cell-mediated immunity) becomes too dominant.  I call the Th2 cytokines the “guard dogs” or our immune system.  They stop stuff from getting in.  The Th1 aspect I call the “attack dogs.”  They work to destroy stuff once it enters.  We obviously need balance between the two.

Things like exposure to normal healthy bacteria in our gut and exposure to pets very early in life challenge our attack dog immune cells and keep them trained.  Antibiotic use EVER and living in an otherwise sterile, hygiene environment does not train the attack dog immune cells.

Vaccinations stimulate the guard dog immune cells, potentially leading to allergies and asthma.  We also know that Tylenol exposure, both in the womb and out, can increase asthma risk.

But did you also know that there are many chemicals in our environment that you are exposed to every single day that can increase the risk of asthma?  This particular study looked at the presence of compounds know to mimic hormones in the body as well as chemicals already known to contribute to asthma.  Researchers looked at just where many of these compounds may be lurking, and you’ll likely find most of the list present in your home, car and office.  They include:

  1. Vinyl products (think shower curtains)
  2. Fragranced products such as perfume, air fresheners, and dryer sheets
  3. Sunscreens

Researchers found that many chemicals that they were able to find on products you would be exposed to were not listed on product labels.

Let’s go back to number 2 above, because this is the one that I think most people have a hard time understanding.  Or maybe they are just not willing to admit that fragrances are a problem.  Just to clear things up–they ARE.

Think on this.  Just how many of these do you expose yourself to?

  • Dryer sheets (we use those dryer ball thingees)
  • Carpet fresheners (so the carpet still stinks, but you’ve covered up the stinky smell with a chemical one)
  • Most candles (very few are made with only essential oils)
  • Air fresheners (see carpet fresheners, above…)
  • Bath stuff (bombs, shampoos, bubble baths, salts)

As an example of just how oblivious society is, let me relate a recent experience I had in a fancy, “natural” bath type store.  This particular store sells many things that they tout as natural, one of them being bath bombs.

I asked one of the salespeople if they made any with just essential oils.  When she was unable to find ANY, I stressed my concern with the term “fragrances.”  She even called over her manager to assure me that these are still natural and that there are no problems with “fragrances.”  I figured that right then and there was not the time to get into an argument over asthma triggers with the store manager.  But you get the point….even this store promotes their products as “natural” and yet they are anything but.

So how many of these types of products do you have in your home that you, prior to reading this post, were not aware of?

Natural Remedies for Eczema in Infants, Toddlers and Children

July 13, 2012 by James Bogash

Our immune system starts out delicate. The first 2 years are critical. Luckily, natural remedies for eczema in infants, toddlers and children are safe and effective.

The phrase to understand here is “immune tolerance.” The immune system is supposed to attack things it is supposed to (like bacteria and viruses) and not attack things it is not supposed to (like our skin, thyroid or gut). This is called tolerance. And it develops very early. Like, “in the womb” early.

A few things are well known to increase the risk of asthma and eczema very early in life.

  1. Paracetamol (Tylenol) use in pregnancy increases risk of asthma in children
  2. While nursing is best, if formula is used, hydrolyzed formulas like Nutramagen or Alimentum may lower the risk of eczema and asthma
  3. Vitamin D intake during pregnancy may lower the risk of wheezing up to 3 years of age
  4. C-section babies are at increased risk of allergies and asthma

Hold on…C-sections can increase the risk of immune system problems? “How does that happen?” you may ask.

One of the most powerful factors helping newborns, infants and toddlers develop a healthy immune system and good immune tolerance is the presence of a healthy bacterial flora. I would have to venture to say that, based on the evidence, this may be THE most important factor for a healthy immune system. And not just in our younger years, but for the rest of our lives.

Back to the C-section dilemma.

In the womb, a developing baby’s gut is sterile. Nothing is growing in it, although it is a warm and very hospitable environment for bacteria to grow. So, as the baby passes through the vaginal canal, that baby’s first exposure should be Lactobacillus from healthy bacterial flora in the vaginal vault. Now, if mom’s had antibiotics this might not occur.

So think of the C-section baby. Rather than Lactobacillus, the first bacteria to hit that nice warm growing environment is kind of up for grabs. And sure enough, we see differences in the bacterial flora of the gut in infants born vaginally vs C-section. But can the C-section baby be spared the increased risk?

That leads us to this particular study. Researchers found that giving a Lactobacillus supplementation for the first 2 years of a high risk newborn’s life had some pretty amazing effects.

  1. Risk of having eczema at 4 years was cut 43%
  2. Rhinoconjunctivitis (think runny nose and watery eyes) at 4 years was a whopping 62% lower
  3. There were also smaller reductions in the risk of atopic dermatitis (26%)
  4. Risk of wheeze was down 21%
  5. Allergic sensitization down 28%

Interestingly, the probiotic Bifidobacterium animalis did not affect the risk of any of these.

These are some pretty massive impacts from such a simple and safe natural remedy for eczema in our infants, toddlers and children. And keep in mind that these effects are likely lifelong–those first 2 years are so critical that they can set up a lifetime of protection or problems.

Looking at the flip side, it becomes clear that antibiotics can be a major contributor to the development of these same problems by killing off the good bacteria.

Given that some 90% of kids are given antibiotics by the time they are 2, did your child’s pediatrician explain some of the problems that might occur with destruction of the normal flora? Better yet, did they recommend probiotics after antibiotics? Feel free to share!

HIGH DOSE THERAPY EFFECTS THE QUALITY OF PATIENT’S LIFE – (08-28-06)

July 12, 2012 by James Bogash

Effects of high-dose sublingual immunotherapy on quality of life in patients with seasonal asthma: a pilot study

It’s funny that with the increasing amount of studies being done on this very safe and effective approach to allergies, that it’s still relatively unheard of. I’ve got a few docs in my area that I refer patients out to and the response is usually quite positive.

One thing I do love is that this therapy is actually looking at FIXING the problem, not just suppressing the immune response. About 2/3 of our immune system is centered around the GI tract and this immune group has the ability to turn up or turn down the immune response in the rest of the body.

So, give these immune cells a small amount of antigen, and there is a chance that they will send a signal out to the rest of the immune system that this molecule is “ok” and will tone down our response to that molecule.

EARLY LIFE ANTIBIOTIC EXPOSURE – (08-28-06)

July 12, 2012 by James Bogash

Atopic wheezing and early life antibiotic exposure: a nested case control study

With all the research pointing to just how darn important a good, balanced, healthy bacterial flora in our GI tract is, you would hope at SOME point pediatricians would back off on antibiotic usage for everything that comes through their office.

But hey–give the 3 month old antibiotics for the ear infections caused by cow’s milk formula, and you’re practically guaranteed that you’ll get some extra visits with the child gets older and develops allergies and asthma. Talk about practice building techniques!!!

ASSOCIATION BETWEEN CAESAREAN SECTION AND ASTHMA – (12-19-05)

May 20, 2012 by James Bogash

Caesarean section delivery and the risk of allergic disorders in childhood

Probably one of the single most important things we can focus on in a newborn up to 2 yrs of age (other than, of course, breastfeeding and good maternal nutrition…) is maintaining a healthy normal bacterial flora. This starts from the passage down the birth canal and is obviously disrupted during C-section birth. Should it not be ob/gyn obligations to warn new mothers of C-sections babies what improper acquisition of normal flora may do to their newborn?

Also, while this study showed an association between C-section birth and asthma, I’m sure the association would’ve been much stronger if we compared C-section birth to vaginal births from mother’s with high levels of lactobacillis in the vaginal vault (i.e. mom never received antibiotics, is prone to yeast infections, etc…).

DIETARY INTAKE IN PATIENTS WITH ASTHMA – (04-25-05)

May 5, 2012 by James Bogash

Dietary intake in patients with asthma: A case control study

It is funny how little we look at dietary factors in the treatment of asthma.  I remember a few years back I had a middle aged male patient who I could not even adjust without him going into a one minute coughing spasm that require water to calm down.  He had been seeing a pulmonologist for 10+ years.  I mentioned to him that refined carbs and caffeine could affect airway reactivity.  Turns out he was drinking Mountain Dew several times per day.

Bottom line–one month later, after avoiding Mountain Dew alone, he was back to normal.  This was never once mentioned to him by his “specialist.”

WHAT ARE THE SAFE MEDICATIONS DURING PREGNANCY? – (11-05-07)

April 19, 2012 by James Bogash

A matched patient-sibling study on the usage of paracetamol and the subsequent development of allergy and asthma

Despite mounting evidence of links between paracetamol (Tylenol) use and asthma in children, it seems that many OBs have not caught on just yet.

The bottom line is that there really are NO completely safe medications during pregnancy. This is such an important time in development of future health risks of the child / adult, and we need to be careful of everything that is put into a pregnant woman’s body. This does work out well for chiropractic, however, as adjusting pregnant women doesn’t seem to cause asthma.

HOW VITAMIN D SUPPLEMENTATION HELPS DURING PREGNANCY? – (11-05-07)

April 19, 2012 by James Bogash

Vit D Intake During Pregnancy and Risk of Recurrent Wheeze in Children at 3 Years of Age

The rates of vit D deficiency in pregnant women and their newborn babies is unconscionably high. While immediate concerns like rickets jump to mind, of greater concern is how important Vit D is for health immune system balance.

The findings of this study further cement this importance and, extrapolated out, would have impacts on asthma, allergy and autoimmune risk years later. Supplementation of pregnant women with Vit D is very cheap, safe and easy. Individual dosages can be given in a one time dose a month or so before delivery. We need to move on this as a medical culture or this fear mongering of sun exposure is going to further drain our healthcare future.
