Omega 3 fatty acids and CVD – (01-14-04)

August 22, 2012 by James Bogash

Omega 3 fatty acids and CVD—fishing for a natural treatment

You’ve probably heard that omega-3 fatty acids are good for lots of stuff. The reason is that these fatty acids effect such a basic level of physiology that their benefits extend outwards in several directions. We know that a healthy balance of omega-3 to omega-6 affects the end products of inflammation or anti-inflammation depending upon which fatty acid is available for an enzyme to work on. Also, omega-3 fatty acids seem to affect our genetic expression of a family of receptors that alter the way fats break down in our bodies. So, the intake of the right type of fat may actually stimulate the overall breakdown of fat. So, this fanaticism with “low fat” and “fat free” has never been a good idea–the types of fats are much more important then their absence.

FLU VACCINE BOOSTS ONE’S IMMUNE SYSTEM – (10-20-05)

July 22, 2012 by James Bogash

Intake of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids and fish and risk of community-acquired pneumonia in US men

Didn’t see any headlines in the paper on this one about skipping the flu vaccine and boosting your immune system through healthy lifestyle changes. Probably not as dramatic as “Thousands predicted to die as flu vaccine shortage ravages the nation.”

AVOID CANNED NUTS TO LOWER CHOLESTEROL – (07-09-07)

April 5, 2012 by James Bogash

Almonds Decrease Postprandial Gylcemia, Insulinemia, and Oxidative Damage in Healthy Individuals

When discussing the health benefits of nuts, it is important to differentiate the unaltered nut (as found in most bulk food sections) vs the canned, “Plantars’ nut” type of nut. Most canned nuts have cottonseed oil added in, raising the levels of omega-6 and completely undoing the health benefits of the fats in the nuts.

I recently had a patient that “tried everything” to lower her cholesterol. Reminds me of the drug commercials that make it sound like lifestyle changes are not always enough… A mere switching away from canned nuts brought her cholesterol under 200 for the first time in years. Besides the healthy fats, nuts contain a mixture of tocopherols and tocotrienols; compounds well known to protect us from oxidative damage.

DECLINING WILD SALMON POPULATIONS IN RELATION TO PARASITES (08-04-08)

March 4, 2012 by James Bogash

Declining Wild Salmon Populations in Relation to Parasites from Farm Salmon.

It is very rare that a server in a restaurant understands that there is a significant difference between farm raised and wild caught salmon. One server even thought that “Atlantic salmon” on the menu grown in aquifers in a river (must’ve been the “Atlantic” river….) but fed corn are a good thing.

Farm raised are generally fed corn (high in omega-6 instead of the omega-3 we associate with fish) and given a dye for the pink color. No comparison to wild caught. Now, in this article, we find that the growing of farm fish is creating a hazard for wild caught salmon. Yet ANOTHER reason not to eat or support farm raised.
