OXIDATIVE STRESS AND INFLAMMATION LEAD TO MITOCHONDRIAL DYSFUNCTION – (08-11-04)

September 20, 2012 by James Bogash

No evidence for heritability of Parkinson disease in Swedish twins. I know when I speak in the community on neurodegenerative conditions like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, there is usually surprise and quite a bit of resistance when I describe them as diseases of lifestyle. However, the research is pointing more and more towards (sound familiar??) oxidative stress and inflammation leading to mitochondrial dysfunction. Ultimately the cells cannot keep up with the damage being done to themselves and they commit suicide (a process called apoptosis). Lose too many cells this way and you start losing function. No evidence for heritability of Parkinson disease in Swedish twins — Wirdefeldt et al. 63 (2): 305 — Neurology –

HOW TO CHECK THE MARKERS OF STRESS – (09-29-05)

July 22, 2012 by James Bogash

Potential markers of oxidative stress in stroke

This is such an important concept to get a grip on. Sure, we can homogenized our patient’s brains in a blender and directly measure markers of oxidative stress, but patients rarely benefit from this approach.

It does appear from several studies that malondialdehyde (MDA) is turning out to be a good marker. This is nice, because there are already several cheap and easy urine tests to determine qualitatively MDA levels.

Once we get a complete picture of how effective these markers for oxidative stress are in the nervous system, we can begin to take a more aggressive stance on targeted antioxidant therapies to lower risk/progression of neurodegenerative disorders and stroke.

INSULIN HELPS IN PROTECTION IN MIDST OF HEART ATTACK – (09-29-05)

July 22, 2012 by James Bogash

Insulin neuroprotection against oxidative stress in cortical neurons involvement of uric acid and glutathione antioxidant defenses

Lest you think that Mother Nature created a compound like insulin and all it does is nasty things (aka Metabolic Syndrome), remember that Mother Nature does everything with a purpose. Insulin is no different. While high levels are unquestionably horrendous to our long term health, their is much evidence supporting insulin in protecting patients in the midst of a heart attack and now, with potentially lowering oxidative stress in neurodegenerative disorders. Balance is the key word.
