Mitochondrial Function

Oxidative Capacity, Lipotoxicity, Mitochondrial Damage in Type 2 Diabetes – (07-02-04)

Oxidative Capacity, Lipotoxicity, Mitochondrial Damage in Type 2 Diabetes

It’s always nice to have articles validating a multi-pronged approach to treating chronic diseases. While paying attention to the glycemic indices of a diet, it is also important to provide a multitude of compounds from foods that lower oxidative stress. In this review, oxidative stress was noted to be a contributing factor to onset of diabetes by affecting mitochondrial function. Basically, insults to the body (or, normal everyday living without the nutrients to protect our cells) will result in an increase in the machinery of our cells to defend against the insults. The mitochondria of our cells will produce more energy but, as a power station producing electricity, more “smoke” will be produced along with the extra electricity. Without protection (in the form of antioxidants, protective enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, etc…) from the “smoke” (i.e. free radicals, oxidative stress) the “smoke” will turn around and damage the mitochondria. More damage to the mitochondria means the cell will no longer function optimally.

TO TREAT MIGRAINE CHANGE YOUR GLOBAL LIFESTYLE – (12-03-07)

April 19, 2012 by James Bogash

Migraine and coronary heart disease mortality: a prospective cohort study

The bottom line is that migraine is a systemic disorder, most likely a result of altered mitochondrial function and / or oxidative stress. These dysfunctions are not limited to the brain, but rather have an effect everywhere in the body, playing a role in most, if not all, chronic diseases.

So, if this is the case, then finding increases in other diseases like heart disease should be no big surprise. So, the ONLY best way to approach migraine treatment is to look at the entire patient and make global lifestyle changes to improve the way their neurons are functioning.

METABOLIC ENDOTOXEMIA INITIATES OBESITY AND INSULIN RESISTANCE – (01-26-08)

Metabolic Endotoxemia Initiates Obesity and Insulin Resistance

Got out your dry erase marker and board for this one? A perfect example of just how convoluted physiology is and why dividing human health into specialties just doesn’t work. Here’s the deal… Regular readers of Updates know how much importance I place on mitochondrial function and dysfunction as it relates to chronic diseases. So the idea that mitochondrial dysfunction will lead to obesity and insulin resistance is no surprise whatsoever.

We know from animal studies that high fat diets increase the levels of LPS (lipopolysaccharides–products coming off the cell wells of bacteria, typically from the gut). Higher levels of LPS (called Endotoxemia) leads to interference with mitochondrial function. So, other then high fat diets, how else to we get higher levels of LPS? How about destruction of normal flora with antibiotics leading to overgrowth of bad bacteria in the gut? Couple that with a high fat diet and you’ve got the circle complete. Just a tad more complicated than an Arkansas family tree.

EFFECT OF HYPERGLYCEMIA ON MITOCHONDRIAL RESPIRATION

February 1, 2012 by James Bogash

A few things to think about here.  We could argue that healthy mitochondrial function is the Holy Grail of good health and longevity.  Anything that improves mitochondrial function is a good thing.  So, what does this mean if we focus so heavily in mainstream medicine on achieving good blood sugar control, but that this control does not change mitochondrial function?

Could it mean we’re barking up the wrong physiological pathway?  I could rant and rave about surrogate end markers, but I’m sure you’ve read it from me before… It boils down to the cold, hard, undeniable fact that the ONLY way to properly manage chronic conditions like diabetes is through lifestyle changes.  There is massive evidence that changing a particular number artificially through the use of drugs is not only not helpful, but dangerous.

STEPS TO REDUCE MITOCHONDRIAL DYSFUNCTION IN KIDS

November 19, 2011 by James Bogash

Prediabetic children already have mitochondrial dysfx. I know most of us slept through biology class, but the mitochondria generate energy for our cells to function. Some billion reaction occur per SECOND, & every one requires energy. Not enough energy & fecal matter hits. EVERY chronic disease, cancer begins here. Seeing this problem in kids is a sign of worse things to come. Stop processed foods. Reduce chemical exposure. Increase fruits, veggies, spices, tea.
