Calcium supplementation of chocolate: effect on digestibility and lipids – (02-08-01)

Calcium supplementation of chocolate: effect on digestibility and lipids

This article examines the effects of adding calcium to chocolate to lower the absorption of the fat. The addition of calcium carbonate lowered the absorption of lipids without affecting the taste. A few things to consider here. First, we all know that, if we knew a particular type of chocolate had less absorbable fat, we would just eat MORE of it (bottom line…by stock in Hershey’s). Next, what does this tell you about how effective calcium carbonate is at getting into our bones, where we need it? Not very effective is lipids can effect its absorption.

Effects of Diet and Simvastatin on Lipids, Insulin, and Antioxidants – (02-11-02)

Effects of Diet and Simvastatin on Lipids, Insulin, and Antioxidants

This studied evaluated the potentiating ability of a Mediterranean-type diet to a standard pharmaceutical regimine. The dietary changes in this study have some strong effects on certain risk factors for CVD. I would suggest dropping the simvastatin and adding exercise and possibly a natural cholesterol lowering compound such as garlic, niacin, policosanol or guggulipids.

Almonds & its oil lower cholesterol AND protect it – (04-08-02)

January 21, 2013 by James Bogash

Almonds & Its Oil Have Similar Effects on Lipids and LDL Oxidation

Most nuts and seeds have favorable effects on lipids, despite their high fat content. The fats in most nuts and seeds are monounsaturated, which has consistently been shown to lower LDL cholesterol.

This article does answer an interesting question–does the oil extracted from almonds retain its beneficial effects on lipids? The answer, in this case is yes. However, I still will stick with my whole foods ideology–eat the whole nuts instead. It’s a very good chance that Mother Nature threw some other stuff in the rest of the nut that we haven’t discovered yet…

SHORT TERM DIET AND EXERCISES EFFECTS CHILDREN’S HEALTH – (09-29-05)

Effect of a Short-term Diet and Exercise Intervention on Serum Insulin, Lipids, Oxidative Stress, Inflammation, and Adhesion Molecules in Children

I’m not quite sure which is more surprising–the fact that these children noted pretty drastic improvements in health markers within TWO WEEKS, or the fact that these kids needed this type of intervention at all.

So many times, I hear parents mention that they are not going to “deprive” their children of a “normal” childhood by not given them junk like Twinkies and Doritos. Can’t quite begin to describe how demented this position is. And if their kid wanted to start smoking?????

WHAT ARE GOOD BIOMARKERS OF OXIDATIVE STRESS? – (03-28-05)

May 9, 2012 by James Bogash

Biomarkers of Oxidative Stress Study II: Are oxidation products of lipids, proteins, and DNA markers of CCl4 poisoning?

Don’t you just love this?  An instant contribution to our dilemma!!  While the jury is still out, we are starting to gather evidence as to what are good markers of oxidative stress.

This study did support the use of malondialdehyde (MDA) as a marker–which is wonderful because there is already a very easy urine at-home test available that is also very inexpensive.  Stay tuned as more research comes out.
