High insulin levels linked to deaths from breast cancer – (07-07-00)

High insulin levels linked to deaths from breast cancer

Just how much more evidence do we need to realize that the Western lifestyle is killing us?? All the enriched wheat flour, sugars, corn syrup and lack of essential nutrients all leads to higher insulin levels.

Dietary Fat Intake as Risk Factor for the Development of Diabetes – (02-24-03)

Dietary Fat Intake as Risk Factor for the Development of Diabetes

Let’s see…increased animal fat is a risk factor for diabetes? This may seem like a no-brainer, but I’m sure the Atkin’s diet people are out there scratching their collective heads saying that they thought high protein helped control insulin levels. Well, maybe lean proteins and wild game may contribute to a healthy lifestyle, but there are no good nutritionists on the planet that would agree that higher animal intakes protect against any chronic diseases.

Inflammation and death in Chronic Heart Failure – (01-02-01)

Cytokine Parameters and Mortality in Chronic Heart Failure

This is an interesting article, not only looking at different types of tissue necrosis factor (TNF) in heart disease, but also other cytokines as well. As happens so often with human physiology and disease, we start to see the tangled web that decides our health. TNFalpha levels are increased by insulin and abdominal adipose tissue. Both high insulin levels and obesity are linked to increased risk of heart disease. Could this be one of the mechanisms by which this occurs? Maybe this is the route by which whole grains protects against heart disease; by controlling the insulin response and lowering production of TNFalpha…

Frequency of eating and concentrations of serum cholesterol – (12-17-01)

January 21, 2013 by James Bogash

Frequency of eating and concentrations of serum cholesterol

This study finds that the more frequent someone eats, the lower their cholesterol. Knowing that insulin directly stimulates HMG-CoA reductase (the major route of cholesterol production in humans), and knowing that smaller, more frequent meals stabilizes insulin levels, this study is no great shocker. Still interesting, though…

BENEFITS OF CALORIE RESTRICTION IS LOWERING OF INSULIN LEVELS – (04-25-05)

Undernutrition w/o malnutrition as a protective factor to prevent DNA damage in the elderly

Despite the infomercials, emails and all the anti-aging miracles you get in the mail, the only thing that has consistently shown to extend lifespan in mammals in calorie restriction without nutrient restriction.

This is an interesting study in that it is done in healthy elderly patients.  With a mild caloric restriction of 10-20%, the research found less DNA damage in the patient’s white blood cells.  Most of the research seems to suggest that much of the benefit of calorie restriction has something to do with lowering insulin levels.
