Now, while this is a rat study, the implications are pretty important.  Basically, by controlling inflammation by controlling the activity of NFKB actually reversed heart enlargement.  This has wonderful implications for those patients with congestive heart failure.  While the drug companies are desperately trying to come up with an effective drug to inhibit activity of NFKB, nature has already provided us with several, including hops and rosemary.

However, lifestyle changes to lower overall inflammatory burden and special attention to mitochondrial function would most likely help as well by removing the need for the activity of NFKB in the first place.

My friends think I’m nuts, but I really am starting to believe that oxidative stress and subsequent mitochondrial dysfunction is darn close to the root of all evil. Here we see the link to enlargement of the heart and how this event is protected against by a synthetic version of resveratrol. Resveratrol is the compounds found in red wine, grapes and peanuts that is known to protect the heart.

My question is, we already know that resveratrol protects the heart–why are we looking for a synthetic version? Can you say patent…?

Personally, I think that “tetrahydrobiopterin” is a wonderful word to use in daily conversion and will not only score big points in Scrabble, but will make you appear much smarter. Boiling it down to a physiologic level, BH4 is a cofactor that is involved in some very important processes, including the production of neurotransmitters involved in mood and energy, as well as the activation of nitric oxide synthase (NOS). Remember that NOS is an enzyme that produces, nitric oxide, and that nitric oxide helps to relax blood vessels and make blood vessels happier.

So this study finds that the use of BH4 has a positive effect on the function of the heart muscles. Another important thing to consider is that, for proper formation of BH4 to occur, the body has to be able to methylate properly–which requires adequate levels of folic acid, B12 and B6 and is highly effected by genetic uniquenesses.
