RISK FOR CVD DEATH WITH THE HIGHEST COCOA USERS – (04-24-06)

August 7, 2012 by James Bogash

Cocoa Intake, Blood Pressure, and Cardiovascular Mortality

Tea, red wine, chocolate, coffee, cocoa…all these have at one time been considered not good for us. Fortunately for us, all of these polyphenol-containing compounds have been found to be protective against a variety of chronic diseases.

In this study, the authors found a whopping half the risk for CVD death with the highest cocoa users.

PATTERN OF DECLINING BLOOD PRESSURE – (05-15-06)

August 7, 2012 by James Bogash

Pattern of declining blood pressure across replicate population surveys of the WHO MONICA project, mid-1980s to mid-1990s, and the role of medication

Okay. Let me get this straight. Study after study (with millions being spent) to determine which blood pressure lowering medication is best (and it turns out to be the cheapest–the brand new “fancy dancy” BP meds are less effective and much more expensive) and, when all the cards are laid out on the table, BP meds have had very little effect on the overall drop in BP over a decade. So, insurance companies want to limit chiropractic care to 6.7 visits per year, but they’ll pay indefinitely for meds to lower BP when they’re not shown to be effective over the long run. Sign me up for the lifestyle changes.

LINK WITH INSULIN RESISTANCE AND INCREASED RISK FOR DIABETES – (05-29-06)

August 5, 2012 by James Bogash

Glucose Metabolism in Patients with Essential Hypertension

Wow!! A full 2/3 of patients in this study with high blood pressure had sugar handling problems. And I don’t EVER recall a patient coming in on blood pressure meds that was told about the link with insulin resistance and the increased risk for diabetes. Talk about missing the boat on treatment!!

Of course, this study was strongly supported by the pharmaceutical companies–what a great idea for cross marketing!! Find a patient with one problem that is on drugs for that problem, and link this to another condition that needs drugs! What more could you ask for?

COCOA REDUCES BLOOD PRESSURE AND INSULIN RESISTANCE – (08-01-05)

July 30, 2012 by James Bogash

Cocoa Reduces Blood Pressure and Insulin Resistance and Improves Endothelium-Dependent Vasodilation in Hypertensives

Need I say more?  Of course.  Remember, the mostly likely compound that protects in chocolate is the flavanols (also found in red grapes, tea, coffee) and this is NOT milk or white chocolate.  Hersheys is not going to suddenly promote Mr. Goodbar as a way to stay healthy (unless, of course, they took the same “twist the research to support your marketing” classes that the dairy industry attends…).  Stick with the dark chocolate.

Ironically, however, I have not seen a strong push to come up with a supplement that is made up of dehydrated chocolate or something along those lines to achieve the same benefits.  Guess that would be a hard sell…”here, take two capsules and day,” or “how ’bout some chocolate?”

MEDICATION VS AGGRESIVE LIFESTYLE CHANGES – (07-25-05)

July 8, 2012 by James Bogash

Is Population-Wide Diuretic Use Directly Associated With the Incidence of End-Stage Renal Disease in the United States?

Well now, doesn’t this just open up an awful can of worms?  Over the past few years we’ve had evidence suggesting that the diuretics should absolutely be the first line of defense for patients with high blood pressure over newer, more expensive drugs.  So many physicians are now switching patients back to good old fashioned diuretics.  As with any other time we use medication, a dark side seems to be coming to play.

Given that this is a dark topic for a very, very common condition and the ramifications are huge, this is one that will get shoved under the table for decades.  This is a perfect time to relate a patient experience.  Had a female put in my office about one week ago.  She’s been a patient for several years and has kept a pretty advanced insulin resistance in check with lifestyle, but had been faultering the past few months.  A blood pressure check revealed 180/80–not exactly safe, by any means.

We had a conversation about medication vs aggressive lifestyle changes and she did not want meds.  Staying in close contact with her over the next few days, she was called FOUR days later and was below 140.  There’s no drug on the market that would’ve done that for her.

ARE CARBS EQUALLY CREATED? – (07-18-05)

July 8, 2012 by James Bogash

Rye Bread Enhances the Production and Plasma Concentration of Butyrate but Not the Plasma Concentrations of Glucose and Insulin in Pigs

Okay, so this is a pig study, but given what a large chunk of the US population eats….  Anyway, this study compared the effects on the GI tract and glycemic response of rye vs wheat and demonstrates beautifully that carbs are not all created equal.

Basically, the fiber in rye was much stronger at stimulating butyrate production (which leads to healthier GI tracts and less cancer risk) as well as a much lower glycemic response in the bloodstream.  However, this study used actual rye, not the highly processed “wheat bread disguised as rye” seen most often.

THINK BEFORE YOU DRINK THAT EXTRA CUP OF COFFEE! – (12-19-05)

May 20, 2012 by James Bogash

Habitual Caffeine Intake and the Risk of Hypertension in Women

This study found no link between caffeine from coffee and high blood pressure. However, the relationship was there for cola beverages, both diet and fully sugared. A few comments here. I believe coffee has gotten a bad rap because of the habits usually associated with it (i.e. coffee=breakfast, coffee & danish, stressed out office worker…) but the polyphenol content of coffee is pretty high and would confer a protective effect on a variety of conditions. The fact that colas increased risk should come as no great shocker.

But, for those decaffers out there, pay attention to how your coffee is decaffeinated. Many use a process involving trichloroethylene and methylene chloride-compounds which have been shown to cause cancer in the lab. Granted, the levels the animals were exposed to were much lower whatever residues are left in the coffee, but it does leave room for questions.

HOW GOOD IS TO CONSUME DARK CHOCOLATE? – (04-25-05)

May 6, 2012 by James Bogash

Short-term administration of dark chocolate is followed by a significant increase in insulin sensitivity and a decrease in blood pressure

Need I say more?  Remember, though, that this is dark chocolate, NOT milk chocolate with all it’s added sugar.
