Work stress and risk of cardiovascular mortality

It is well known that chronic states of stress lead to increased cortisol levels, and this increase in cortisol wreaks havoc on most body systems. One way it does this is by increasing insulin levels, producing abdominal obesity and increasing risk of heart disease. Insomnia, difficulty focusing and hormone disruptions can also be added to the list of detrimental effects of hypercortisolemia. Anyone care to take up a collection for billboards advertsing “stress kills?”

RISK FOR CVD DEATH WITH THE HIGHEST COCOA USERS – (04-24-06)

Cocoa Intake, Blood Pressure, and Cardiovascular Mortality

Tea, red wine, chocolate, coffee, cocoa…all these have at one time been considered not good for us. Fortunately for us, all of these polyphenol-containing compounds have been found to be protective against a variety of chronic diseases.

In this study, the authors found a whopping half the risk for CVD death with the highest cocoa users.

Long-Term Effects of Stress Reduction on Mortality in Persons 55 Years of Age With Systemic Hypertension

So stress reduction makes you healthier and lowers your risk of dying from many diseases.  Big deal.  But a 49% decrease in risk of cancer in participants performing meditation?  Holy anti-carcinogens, Batman!!  That is cutting your risk of cancer in half from meditation alone.  There was also a 23% reduction in all cause mortality and 30% reduction in cardiovascular mortality.  These numbers are staggering.
