Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Exercise – (02-22-01)

September 18, 2013 by James Bogash

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Exercise

This review article estimates that a whopping 23% of deaths from the leading chronic diseases in this country are related to a sedentary lifestyle. Twenty-three percent!!! That means that up to a quarter of these deaths could be avoided with an exercise routine. Add dietary changes and I’m sure that number will climb much higher. And the 23% is just deaths…just how much morbidity (suffering from poor quality of health) is associated with a sedentary lifestyle??

CRP, Interleukin 6, and Risk of Developing Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus – (07-23-01)

CRP, Interleukin 6, and Risk of Developing Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Inflammation plays a key role in many of today’s chronic diseases and lifestyle changes to lower overall inflammatory burden will cut across disease risk for a variety of diseases. Identifying and avoiding food allergies, choosing a more plant based diet over animal based, adequate fruit and veggie intake and exercise are just a few of the ways to lower inflammation. Of interesting note is that insulin is generally considered a proinflammatory hormone (with the exception of a few studies that suggest an anti-inflammatory action in certain instances)…it is possible that increasing inflammation is one way in which high insulin promotes diabetes.

METABOLIC SYNDROME VS FRAMINGHAM RISK SCORE – (01-09-06)

Metabolic Syndrome vs Framingham Risk Score for Prediction of Coronary Heart Disease, Stroke, and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Just a short gripe and then I’ll go…how can something as strongly predictive as the metabolic syndrome on a large number of chronic diseases continue to go ignored by clinicians interacting with patients every day? I have no rational explanation for the disconnect, and quite frankly, there is no excuse not to educate patients on managing this condition.

GLYCAEMIC CONTROL AMONG PATIENTS WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS – (11-24-08)

February 25, 2012 by James Bogash

Glycaemic control among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in seven European countries

The authors conclude that the progressive decline in glycemic control in most diabetics over time despite increasing medication usage indicate “the progressive nature of the disease and need for more effective disease management/therapeutic alternatives.” Maybe we should look at it from another perspective….maybe if we gave diabetics REAL lifestyle advice (lower glycemic, high plant based, no artificial sweeteners, impactful exercise, stress management, etc…) instead of relying on more and more medication, that we would not see the “progressive nature” of diabetes.

This review pretty much locks up the idea that lifestyle changes are the ONLY way to manage diabetes, and that reliance upon medication for management is a slowly progressive decline into worsening glycemic control.
