IMPAIRED GLUTATHIONE SYNTHESIS IN SCHIZOPHRENIA – (03-17-08)

March 5, 2012 by James Bogash

Impaired glutathione synthesis in schizophrenia: Convergent genetic and functional evidence

A friend had taken a class for her masters degree on psycopharmacology. One of the instructors staunchly believed that the ONLY answer for schizophrenia was pharmacology. Unfortunately, the research doesn’t support this notion, and this professor will only perpetuate dogma, leaving patients suffering with this condition that may be able to be greatly helped.

In this ex-vivo study, researchers determined that the cells of patients with schizophrenia may not deal with oxidative stress effectively, leaving the nervous system susceptible to damage. This could then correlate with lifestyle factors that increase oxidative stress such as lower phytonutrient diet, stress and environmental exposures to produce schizophrenia.

CAN WE BLAME PEDIATRICIANS TO SOME DEGREE ON THE OBESITY EPIDEMIC IN OUR CHILDREN? – (09-01-08)

February 27, 2012 by James Bogash

Early differences in fecal microbiota composition in children may predict overweight

The factors contributing to the increasing levels of obesity in our children are unquestionably multifactorial. Some of these risk factors are always modifiable–exercise, high energy / low phytonutrient diet, stress. Some, however, may not be modifiable as the child ages. These, to a certain degree, may weigh heavier because the importance of identifying the risks BEFORE they produce obesity is the only strong method of modification. So where does that leave the overuse of antibiotics in infants?

Do pediatricians really understand the Pandora’s box they create with even one short duration of antibiotics in an infant or toddler? Can we blame pediatricians to some degree on the obesity epidemic in our children? Maybe not in the past, but going forward from here the knowledge is known–antibiotic use may very well contribute to alteration of gut flora, subsequent altering of gut derived hormonal signals, and developing obesity.

VACCINATIONS IN CHILDREN FORCES NEW BACTERIA TO RISE

January 22, 2012 by James Bogash

VACCINATIONS IN CHILDREN FORCES NEW BACTERIA TO RISE.  I’m not sure at what point we decided, as a public health service, that we can eradicate all communicable diseases from society.  Guess what?  Mother Nature ALWAYS wins.  I consider it a giant “wac-a-mole” game.  Smash down an infectious agent and another one, sometimes more dangerous, pops up.

In this particular case, the vaccine for pneumonia (Prevnar) only protects against some of the strains that can cause invasive pneumonia in children.  And, for a few years, we saw a drop in cases.  But, as Mother Nature moves to establish her dominance, we’ve seen an increase in another subtype of the bacteria.  And guess what?  30% of these new cases were multidrug resistant.  The sad thing is that it is rare for pediatricians to discuss ways to raise healthy children and keep a strong immune system (environmental toxin avoidance, high phytonutrient diet, Vit D, no junk foods, etc…) but will jump on vaccination instead.  It is truly up to parents to be proactive in raising healthy children.  You can NOT rely on your doctor anymore.
