HIGHER GLUTEN LEADS TO LUPUS- (10-20-04)

October 12, 2012 by James Bogash

Gluten sensitivity masquerading as systemic lupus erythematosus

Here we have yet another GI condition that has an effect on the entire body. Allergy to gluten (a protein found primarily in wheat) in these three case studies led to a systemic response that was mistaken for lupus. How’s that for a dramatic manifestation of gluten sensitivity? Two intersting tidbits.

First, gluten is a nitrogenous storage proteins in grains. Give the growing grain nitrogenous fertilizer and it has no choice but to take in the nitrogen and then has to store it as excess gluten. More gluten = higher exposure and likelihood of allergy. Second, yeast overgrowth with candida shows a cross reactivity between a protein segment in candida and a protein segment in gluten. So, antibiotic use again has potential ramifications that most clinicians are totally unaware of.

EXCESSIVE OXIDATIVE DAMAGE EFFECTS TISSUES AND IMMUNE SYSTEM – (12-04-06)

July 30, 2012 by James Bogash

Oxidatively modified autoantigens in autoimmune diseases

Only recently have we begun to change our views on autoimmune conditions. We used to view these conditions as a dysfunction of the immune system–it was attacking our own body and we needed to suppress the immune system to control the disease state. However, once we started taking a much closer look, we started to realize that the immune system was actually performing exactly as it was supposed to.

The problem is that there is excessive oxidative damage to the tissues and the immune system is working to remove this oxidatively damaged tissue. Oxidatively damaged DNA in lupus, oxidatively damaged Type 2 collagen in RA, etc… This can drastically impact the way these conditions need to be treated, and the best method of treatment HAS to include lifestyle modifications to lower overall oxidative stress and inflammation.

TONING UP OR DOWN THE ENTIRE BODY’S IMMUNE RESPONSE – (01-15-07)

March 20, 2012 by James Bogash

The gut-joint axis: cross reactive food antibodies in rheumatoid arthritis

While the research has supported this for some time, clinicians have been slow to catch up.  Bottom line is that the GI tract has a strong ability to tone up or tone down the entire body’s immune response.  Insult the GI tract too much with food allergies and a signal will go out to the rest of the body that we’re under attack, raising our overall defense and increasing likelihood of our body mistakenly attacking our own cells.  An elimination diet is absolutely essential for anyone with an autoimmune disease.

Additionally, our view of autoimmune disorders is changing.  While we have always viewed AI conditions as dysfunctions of the immune system that need to be surpressed, evidence is increasing that the immune system is actually doing what it’s supposed to be doing, but that the tissues themselves (DNA in Lupus, myelin sheat in MS, Type II collagen in RA…) are being excessively damaged.  This is what needs to be fixed, not the immune system.
