Effect of vitamin C on neutrophil function after high-intensity exercise – (04-19-01)

Effect of vitamin C on neutrophil function after high-intensity exercise

This study used 2g of Vit C for one week in runners to determine if Vit C could alter the reduction in neutrophil function commonly seen in long distance runners. No difference was seen. However, there are two issues with this study. First of all, it was small (10 runners), and 2g of Vit C may be way too low of a dose for this application. I recommend 1-2g/day for the average person, and the amount of oxidative free radical production occurring in a long distance runner is very high. I would like to see if intakes on the range of 3-6g/day would make an impact.

BERRIES ARE STRONG SOURCE OF ANTIOXIDANT PROTECTION – (02-17-03)

Black currants, lingonberries, bilberries increases serum quercetin

Berries are strong sources of antioxidant protection. If you consider that the berry is exposed to much sunlight and needs a way to protect itself from oxidative damage from so much sunlight, the berry has developed substances to protect itself. When we eat these berries, we gain that same protection. Too bad for those people on the Atkins’ diet…

Consumption of black currants, lingonberries and bilberries increases serum quercetin concentrations

EXCESSIVE OXIDATIVE DAMAGE EFFECTS TISSUES AND IMMUNE SYSTEM – (12-04-06)

July 30, 2012 by James Bogash

Oxidatively modified autoantigens in autoimmune diseases

Only recently have we begun to change our views on autoimmune conditions. We used to view these conditions as a dysfunction of the immune system–it was attacking our own body and we needed to suppress the immune system to control the disease state. However, once we started taking a much closer look, we started to realize that the immune system was actually performing exactly as it was supposed to.

The problem is that there is excessive oxidative damage to the tissues and the immune system is working to remove this oxidatively damaged tissue. Oxidatively damaged DNA in lupus, oxidatively damaged Type 2 collagen in RA, etc… This can drastically impact the way these conditions need to be treated, and the best method of treatment HAS to include lifestyle modifications to lower overall oxidative stress and inflammation.
