I must admit, this is the first I’ve ever heard of tungstate being used for anything other the light bulbs; let alone health care. But, there was a time I would’ve said the same of lithium, vanadium or chromium when it came to glucose control. Live and learn…

Diabetes 2001;50:131-138 Dr. Joan J. Guinovart from Universitat de Barcelona and colleagues have previously shown that tungstate lowers blood glucose levels in rats made insulin deficient to simulate type 1 diabetes. In the current study, the researchers administered tungstate orally to 7.5-week-old Zucker diabetic fatty rats, which are “considered the closest available rat model to human type 2 diabetes associated with obesity.” The animals had begun to show hyperglycemia, and the treatment temporarily reversed this for about 10 days. Glucose levels then rose again but stabilized at about 200 mg/dL at day 24. In contrast, the glucose level of untreated rats rose to a maximum value of 450 mg/dL. Tungstate treatment caused serum triglyceride levels to fall by 42%, and normalized hepatic concentrations of glucose-6-phosphate. The researchers also found that the treatment led to 55% higher glycogen levels in the liver compared with untreated diabetic or healthy rats. Treatment did not cause a significant change in phosphotyrosine-modified proteins in cultured hepatocytes from diabetic animals. “These data suggest that tungstate administration to Zucker diabetic fatty rats causes a considerable reduction of glycemia, mainly through a partial restoration of hepatic glucose metabolism and a decrease in lipotoxicity,” Dr. Guinovart and colleagues conclude.

Chromium Supplementation Lowers Glucose, Lipid Levels

Chromium has been recommended for years for sugar handling problems, and is nicknamed GTF, glucose tolerance factor. It is not a stretch to believe that it can lower cholesterol levels as well. Since insulin stimulates HMG-CoA reductase, the enzyme that makes endogenous cholesterol, and chromium can lower the need for insulin, it’s a rational train of thought. This study dropped HbA1c levels with no side effects, and even very small changes in HbA1c result in major benefits of end organ damage.

(article) Dietary supplementation with chromium decreased glucose and lipid levels in type 2 diabetics enrolled in an active rehabilitation program, Dr. Haim Rabinovitz reported here in a poster presentation at a meeting of the Gerontological Society of America. In addition to receiving standard diabetes treatment, all subjects were given 200 mcg of chromium twice a day for 3 weeks. Participants were placed on a low-sugar diet of 1500 calories a day. Blood samples, dietary intake, and anthropometric data were collected before and after supplementation. The researchers found a significant decrease in the subjects’ fasting blood glucose levels, from an average of 189 mg/dL to 150 mg/dL. Their hemoglobin A1c levels also improved, falling from an average of 8.15 to 7.58. Total cholesterol dropped from 225.26 mg/dL to 211.42 mg/dL. Triglyceride levels fell from 152 mg/dL to 136 mg/dL. Chromium appears to work by increasing the sensitivity of the patients’ insulin receptors, so they are able to use the insulin more effectively, Dr. Rabinovitz explained. There have been no side effects from it, he added.

Vitamin Supplement Use and Diabetes Mellitus – (06-14-01)

Vitamin Supplement Use and Diabetes Mellitus

This study does not identify specific vitamins, but I can guess at some of the specific vitamins present in a multi that could reduce the risk of diabetes. Vanadium and chromium are known to help insulin do it’s job. The B vitamins help the liver process glucose. However, I would rather see a patient take multivitamin in conjuction with a healthy lifestyle instead of having them take specific nutrients to lower the risk of specific diseases. Remeber that maintaining a healthy lifestyle lowers your risk of ALL diseases…

Add zinc to the list of nutrients that has an impact on insulin resistance right next to chromium, vanadium and CLA. Considering that zinc is involved in a large number of enzymes that protect our bodies from oxidative damage, we know that a deficiency can have a wide range of negative effects.
