Determinants of serum enterolactone concentration – (06-04-01)

June 20, 2013 by James Bogash

Determinants of serum enterolactone concentration

Enterolactone is a lignan found in many whole grains, fruits and berries. This study looks at factors that would influence plasma levels of enterolactone. Enterolactone is a substance that has a wonderful effects on lowering risk of many hormone-related cancers. The authors lend much weight to the contribution that healthy GI flora play a large part in production of these lignans.

PROGNOSTIC FACTORS FOR POST-OPERATIVE COMPLICATIONS – (10-31-05)

August 5, 2012 by James Bogash

Bioelectric impedance and individual characteristics as prognostic factors for post-operative complications

Being a big fan of the BIA as a clinical tool (mainly because I have one…), I am always happy to see it’s use expand. While the definition of phase angle eludes most except electricians, I usually have a hard time describing it without some reference to Star Trek.

But the phase angle has been gaining increasing ground as a mortality risk indicator for many conditions: AIDS, certain cancers, dialysis, and now post-op complications in surgical patients. For lack of a better definition, the higher the phase angle, the greater your likelihood of surviving something bad happening to you.

VITAMIN D AND RISK OF MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS – (07-30-07)

April 8, 2012 by James Bogash

Serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D Levels and Risk of Multiple Sclerosis

We have known for some time now that Vit D and sun exposure was very protective against multiple sclerosis (not quite as effective for treatment, however).

What was surprising about this study, and maybe actually not so surprising given that most chronic diseases start long before onset of symptoms…was that higher levels of serum 25 hydroxyVit D were MOST protective prior to 20 years of age. How much will current recommendations to avoid sun exposure at all costs going to impact future rates of MS? Expect higher rates in the near future, as well as ever increasing rates of certain cancers, diabetes and hypertension (all of which Vit D is very protective for…). Of note is that the protective effect was noted only in whites.

EPIDEMIOLOGY OF SECOND PRIMARY CANCERS – (07-09-07)

April 5, 2012 by James Bogash

The Epidemiology of Second Primary Cancers

The issue here is twofold. First, I believe that our bodies are constantly fighting off cancerous cells. It is not until the immune surveillance is overwhelmed that cancerous tumors sneak past the immune system and begin to grow. This would indicate that the cancer that first shows up may just be one of many “hidden.” Thus, the idea that a second cancer may arise later fits in with this theory.

Another issue is that chemotherapy is very damaging to the body and destroys the immune system. This would leave the body open to future cancers, especially if the needed lifestyle changes are not made. Likely a combination of the two is what occurs, as many oncologists do not even broach the idea of lifestyle changes with their patients. I have had patients see cardiologists that even go so far as to tell their patients to avoid any supplements because they don’t want it the “interfere” with the treatment.
