Aids

Actual Causes of Death in the United States, 2000 – (03-22-04)

Actual Causes of Death in the United States, 2000

Two leading contributors to death in the US in 2000. Tobacco related deaths #1, poor dietary and physical inactivity #2. All this money focused on findings a cure (to date relatively disappointing results as far as cancer and AIDS are concerned despite BILLIONS spent…) and the leading two causes of death are lifestyle related. Prevention. Period.

PROGNOSTIC FACTORS FOR POST-OPERATIVE COMPLICATIONS – (10-31-05)

Bioelectric impedance and individual characteristics as prognostic factors for post-operative complications

Being a big fan of the BIA as a clinical tool (mainly because I have one…), I am always happy to see it’s use expand. While the definition of phase angle eludes most except electricians, I usually have a hard time describing it without some reference to Star Trek.

But the phase angle has been gaining increasing ground as a mortality risk indicator for many conditions: AIDS, certain cancers, dialysis, and now post-op complications in surgical patients. For lack of a better definition, the higher the phase angle, the greater your likelihood of surviving something bad happening to you.

Effect of Introduction of the Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine on Drug-Resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae

I realize that there are bacteria out there that cause lots of nasty stuff in suseptable persons.  But, for some reason, today’s society is hell bent on getting rid of these infections that create problems, mostly through the use of vaccination.  The problem is that Mother Nature is not inclined to be happy about it, so while we eradicate some infectious bug, another pops up right behind it (AIDS, anyone?).

This article clearly demonstrates this.  While the pneumococcal vaccine has reduced the number of infections that it is made for, a subgroup of this same bacteria is increasing.  I envision it as one large “whack a mole” game.
