Breast-feeding protects against celiac disease

As the deluge of literature outlining the harmful effects of celiac disease on the body appears (neurological, gastrological, immune, hepatic…), the finding that breastfeeding may protect against this condition has tremendous implications on long term health of the infant. By inference, we could say that breast feeding has the potential to lower risk of Alzheimers and liver failure via protection against celiac disease. Quite a powerful statement and yet another notch in the feather of propenents of breastfeeding.

Celiac disease in patients with severe liver disease

Is anyone getting tired of hearing me rant and rave about food sensitivities causing systemic problems? Here’s another article implicating celiac disease (an allergy to a protein called gluten for in certain grains) in another serious condtion that was previously of unknown origin. An elimination diet is warranted in so many different patient presentations–cerebellar ataxia, Alzheimers and other dementias and now liver failure.

Risk of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in Celiac Disease

Allergy to gluten, a storage protein found in several grains (most notably wheat), has been all over the medical literature lately. Here we see a 3x increased risk for NHL. We need to start evaluating more regularly for celiac disease. Currently, a blood test called transglutaminase is one of the best ways to evaluate for this condition.

This article finds a prevalence of 1 in 133 of celiac disease. Celiac disease is an allergy to the gluten protein in grains that results in a wide variation of manifestations from GI problems to neurological problems to increased Alzheimer’s risk. Considering that the consequences associated with celiac disease can be great and the prevalence is so high, clinicians need to increase their awareness of this condition.

Coeliac disease and subfertility: association is often neglected

Infertility treatment in today’s society usually consists of fertility drugs and the birth control pill. These methods are designed to override normal human physiology and force the body to perform something it is not ready to perform. A more logical approach would be to restore normal physiology and allow the body to perform as it was meant to. This would include managing insulin resistance, use of progesterone cream, lowering estrogen exposure (endogenous and exogenous) and, in the case of this study, evaluating for coelic disease (allergy to the gluten protein found in several grains, most notably wheat).

AWARENESS OF CELIAC DISEASE – (07-25-05)

Physician Awareness of Celiac Disease

The incidence of celiac disease has been slowing increasing, most likely due to a combination of higher levels of gluten from nitrogenous fertilizers and a cross reactivity with candida albicans (levels of which will increase with antibiotic use).

This study puts the incidence at .7%, but it has been found to be much higher, on the range of 2%.  Given that patients with celiac disease have a higher overall mortality rate, the ignorance of physicians to celiac disease is not acceptable.
