omega-6 fatty acids

Omega 3, not omega 6 fatty acids inhibit tumorogenesis – (07-02-01)

July 21, 2013 by James Bogash

Omega 3, not omega 6 fatty acids inhibit tumorogenesis

All of us in natural medicine have a tendency to call certain things “bad” or “good” when what we really mean is that we need a balance between the two. Every element that the body produces is there for a reason, and problems occur when the amount of that substance increases or decreases compared to normal. Consider the COX-2 inhibitors for arthritis (Vioxx, Celebrex)…the COX-2 enzyme is there for a reason–nature does not do otherwise. Just because we have not identified what that reason is yet does not mean it does not exist. We are now seeing an increase in risks to the heart with the COX-2 selective inhibitors. Perfect example. The omega-3 and -6 fatty acids are no different. Most experts agree that a ratio of about 1:1 or 2 (omega-3 to -5) is ideal, but Western living puts it more like 1:20.

Global Assessment of Organic Contaminants in Farmed Salmon – (01-21-04)

Global Assessment of Organic Contaminants in Farmed Salmon

I have always recommended avoiding farm raised fish because they are typically fed feeds high in omega-6 fatty acids, total voiding the beneficial effects attributed to fish via the omega-3 fatty acids. Here we see another reasons to avoid–frequent contamination with organochlorine chemicals. Do we need any more reasons? By the way, wild salmon is generally healthy and does not seem to retain the heavy metals other fishes like tuna and mahi do.

BENEFITS OF A DIET HIGH IN HEALTHY FATS – (11-21-05)

August 19, 2012 by James Bogash

Relation between dietary omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and clinically diagnosed dry eye syndrome

Can’t say I’ll use this info every day in practice, but thought I’d include it to show how far reaching the benefits of a diet high in healthy fats can go. Of course, give it some time, and I’m sure you’ll skin eye cream made with quacamole with a line stating that “clinical studies PROVE that quacamole can reduce wrinkles..

DIETARY PATTERNS AND RISK OF DEMENTIA – (05-26-08)

March 4, 2012 by James Bogash

Dietary patterns and risk of dementia

While some information about dietary links to altered mental capacity has come out, the strength of these associations just hasn’t been given the press it deserves.

In this study, a protective effect of fruits and veggies as well as fish intake was seen for both dementia and Alzheimer’s. Even more important, an increased intake of omega-6 fatty acids that wasn’t balanced out by increased omega-3s (aka the Western Diet) more than doubled the risk! There is no doubt that neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s are strongly lifestyle related. However, if we don’t get the word out NOW, it will be at least 2 generations before we can see a decline in the incidence of these disorders.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN INFERTILITY, MEN AND FATS

November 21, 2011 by James Bogash

INFERTILITY, MEN AND FATS.  We often talk about infertility as it relates to women and  PCOS, but the man can be equally to blame.  In this study, researchers found that infertile men had higher levels of omega 6 fats (corn, sunflower, soybean oils) and lower levels of omega 3 fats (EPA, DHA).  In addition, they had higher levels of a compound called arachidonic acid (AA) compared to omega 3 fats.  AA is found in animal products such as meat and dairy.
