CALORIE RESTRICTION HAS A POSITIVE EFFECT ON THE MITOCHONDRIA FUNCTION – (08-13-07)

April 14, 2012 by James Bogash

Calorie restriction up-regulates the plasma membrane redox system in brain cells and suppresses oxidative stress during aging.

Calorie restriction has a definite, positive effect on the functioning of mitochondria.

This study adds to our understanding, and finds that CR also helps to increase the efficiency of the enzymes in the cell well of neurons that recycle antioxidants such as CoQ10 and Vit E. CR or alternate day CR needs to be a tool in the treatment box of neurodegenerative disorders such as epilepsy, Alzheimer’s and Parkinsons.

TREATMENT OF PATIENTS WITH ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE – (07-23-07)

April 6, 2012 by James Bogash

Evidence-Based Research in Complementary and Alternative Medicine III: Treatment of Patients with Alzheimer’s Disease

If you were ever looking for a good resource for finding out more about AD, this is definitely a great place to start. Notably, this article looked very critically at the available evidence for treatment of AD, and found that antioxidants, which would include Ginko, definitely play a role. It’s not to say that other natural approaches will not work, but the criteria that were set to pluck the research studies to evaluate were very strict.

Given the current mitochondrial dysfunction leading to neuronal apoptosis (preprogrammed cell suicide) model for neurodegenerative disorders, the fact that antioxidants would be effective should come as no surprise. Unfortunately, clinical recommendations, as usual, as lagging far, far behind the research.

SERUM URIC ACID AND BRAIN ISCHEMIA IN NORMAL ELDERLY ADULTS – (02-25-08)

March 17, 2012 by James Bogash

Serum uric acid and brain ischemia in normal elderly adults

The evidence linking insulin resistance and neurodegenerative disorders continues to accumulate. And, much like every other disease process, this link likely occurs through multiple pathways. From lowered insulin sensitivity in the neurons leading to reduced ability to generate energy for the cell to, as in this case, elevation of uric acid directly affecting the neurons.

The bottom line is that the incidence of neurodegerative disorders is going to be increasing dramatically over the next few decades. The only question is…how will our current “health” care system sustain itself with this type of a burden?

WILL GOING ORGANIC TO AVOID PARKINSON’S?

January 23, 2012 by James Bogash

WILL GOING ORGANIC TO AVOID PARKINSON’S?  The relationship between toxins and development of neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, migraines and seizures, is strong.  As spring rolls around, you may want to reconsider spraying for weeds and insects.  Toxic chemicals in our environment have become so ubiquitous that we no longer give any thought to our personal exposure.  Heck–DDT, banned over 30 years ago, still shows up in most of our bloodstreams!

Bottom line, you have to be proactive with doing your best to eliminate or reduce your exposure to chemicals in our environment.  This includes the fruits and veggies we eat.  Check out www.ewg.org for some great resources.

HOW TO PREVENT PARKINSON’S AND ALZHEIMERS DISEASES?

November 21, 2011 by James Bogash

Preventing Parkinson’s.  Diseases like Parkinsons and Alzheimers are diseases caused by lifestyle.  Unfortunately, this info rarely makes it to the general public, and, even worse, never makes it to the children of patients being diagnosed.  Which means this rapid increase in the incidence of neurodegenerative disorders will not stop for several generations because the ones that need to be educated NOW to prevent the disease in 20 years and not being educated.

The bottom line is that oxidative damage to brain cells leads to cell death.  Great when it happens for a few years in college, but years upon years of poor dietary choices, toxic environmental exposures and prediabetes (YES–prediabetes is a large risk factor) leads to accumulated deaths of cells in important regions of the brain.  Answers lie in stress management, “brain exercising,” high phytonutrient diet, exercising, strong intake of healthy fats, no intake of unhealthy fats and minimizing our exposure to chemicals.
