Protective compounds in tea and heart disease – (08-06-01)

February 3, 2013 by James Bogash

Catechin intake and ischemic heart disease

The benefits of tea are well known, and generally, whatever black tea does, green tea does many times over. One of the compounds believed to provide the beneficial effects is a class of compounds called catechins. This article confirms that catechins, independent of the source (tea or otherwise) can lower the risk of heart disease. Add this to the preventative list which also includes osteoporosis, some types of cancers and diabetes. Remember, however, that just because isolated catechins show a positive result we should not run out and buy up supplements loaded with catechins…just drink tea!

AJCN — Abstracts: Arts et al. 74 (2): 227.

Homocysteine ups risk of heart attack and stroke – (10-24-02)

January 29, 2013 by James Bogash

Homocysteine and Risk of Ischemic Heart Disease and Stroke

This meta analysis finds an 11% increase in ischemic heart disease and 19% increase in stroke. While the authors were not jumping up and down about these results, I strongly disagree. First, one single solitary factor raised risk more than 10%. A single, solitary, VERY modifiable risk factor. (As far as cost, my office offers a 2,000 mcg B12 and 800 mg folic acid for about $8/month…that would equal to about $3,840 for forty years’ worth…hardly the cost of diagnosing CVD). Remember, Western medicine rarely gets beyond the idea of “one cause, one cure.” Natural approaches to CVD would attack multiple angles, with efficacy rising with a more broad scope approach.

Lastly, this review accepts what is currently accepted as “normal” for homocysteine levels. It is highly possible (and we see it in many other lab values) that “normal” values are actually too broad. That would result in patients with “high normal” homocysteine that contributes to their CVD but would actually have counted against association.

RISK OF ISCHEMIC HEART DISEASE – (02-25-08)

March 6, 2012 by James Bogash

Plasma and erythrocyte biomarkers of dairy fat intake and risk of ischemic heart disease

I can tell you that there are a few things that I really get drilled hard on because of patients deep seated beliefs based on truly admirable marketing. Top of the list is my aversion to dairy.

When you look hard at the research, there just isn’t much positive about dairy, and plenty in the negative column. Linked to pancreatic cancer, triples prostate cancer risk, common allergen, mucous forming, non-organic stuff contains antibiotics and hormones….and, in case that’s not enough, up to 2.36 times the risk of ischemic heart disease.

What amazes me is the depth to which the idea that dairy is good for us has permeated every level of health recommendation. While soy milk is a good alternative, just like anything else, too frequent is not good. Our household rotates between soy, almond and rice milk.
