Prevention by lithium treatment – (03-22-04)

Stress-induced structural remodeling in hippocampus: Prevention by lithium treatment

I thought this article was very interesting considering how much our approach to psychiatric disorders have shifted away from the simple approaches to a much more complicated, drug ridden approach. Lithium was used for decades as a treatment for bipolar disorder but has now fallen out of favor and replaced with new drugs that affect the central nervous system. Interestingly, lithium was also used for many years as a treatment for diabetes because of its insulin sensitizing properties. Might this protection to the hippocampal region be mediated through its effects on insulin? Incidently, many of the side effects associated with lithium treatment come from using the carbonate form, which is less bioavailable than other forms of lithium.

MELATONIN USAGE MAY AID NEURODEGENRATIVE DISORDERS – (12-29-04)

Pro-oxidant activity of aluminum in the rat hippocampus: gene expression of antioxidant enzymes after melatonin administration

Maybe I’m just looking, but it seems like there’s been an awful lot of research on melatonin lately. I had previously just considered melatonin as a sleep aid, and did not consider it as an antioxidant. However, with the current literature supporting an oxidative stress/mitochondrial dysfunction etiology for seizures, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and other neurodegenerative disorders, I have begun to look at melatonin in a much different light with great therapeutic potential.

WHAT IS THE NEGATIVE IMPACT OF STRESS REDUCTION ON OUR HEALTH? – (05-16-05)

Glucocorticoids, depression, mood disorders: structural remodeling in the brain

While we’re on the subject of stress, it is well known that chronic stress shrinks certain regions of the brain.

This study adds that, in chronic stress we see atrophy of the hippocampus, but also an enlargement of the amygdala, resulting in increased anxiety and aggression.  I know that stress reduction is important, but sometimes I forget just how much of a negative impact it has on our health.

Articles such as these two really slam home just how devastating chronic stress it.  So, take a deep breath.  Inhale slowly….
