Diet Influences Childhood Asthma Risk – (10-02-00)

August 19, 2013 by James Bogash

Diet Influences Childhood Asthma Risk

This is really no big surprise. Staying away from pro-inflammatory diets high in animal proteins and eating less saturated and hydrogenated oils and more fruits and vegetables can have an impact on almost any disease afflicting humans.

Thorax 2000;55:775-779 Eating at fast food outlets and having a diet particularly low in milk and vegetables are among factors that increase the risk of “wheezy illness” in children. Uni-variate analyses showed that a family history of asthma, a positive skin test result and a history of eating at fast food outlets were significant risk factors for wheezy illness. This was also true of the lowest intakes of milk, vegetables, fiber, and certain nutrients, including vitamin E and calcium. They conclude that diet in childhood is “an important influence in determining the expression of wheezy illness,” and that a change in diet may have “been a determinant of the worldwide increases in asthma and allergies.”

RISK OF SERIOUS INFECTIONS AND MALIGNANCIES – (10-02-06)

Anti-TNF Antibody Therapy in Rheumatoid Arthritis and the Risk of Serious Infections and Malignancies

Of all the new drugs on the market, this one definitely has me worried. By blocking one of our tools we use to fight both infections and cancer, you open up a Pandora’s box of problems if used long term. But never fear!! The powers that be have fully evaluated the risk of cancer (a disease which takes decades to manifest..) and serious infection when someone has been taking this class of drugs for up to one year. Wow.

How short sighted can we be? So now, when a patient is questioning their doctor about this class of drugs, he can honestly say that studies have found increased rates of cancer, but the numbers were small. Not to sound like a doomsayer, but check this again after 10 years. Most of the patients on this class of drugs are NOT being told about anti-inflammatory and pro-inflammatory diets and how much they can influence the disease severity in these patients.

IS MITOCHONDRIAL DYSFUNCTION THE ROOT CAUSE OF CHRONIC DISEASES? – (05-23-05)

April 22, 2012 by James Bogash

Mitochondrial dysfunction in cardiovascular disease

Regular readers of the Updates will know that I feel that mitochondrial dysfunction is the root of all chronic disease evil.  Remember that, in the process of generating energy for our bodies to function in the form of ATP, free radicals are produced that have the potential to cause severe damage to all types of tissues that they come in contact with.  The body and Mother Nature have hundreds of compounds that help us quench these free radicals and prevent damage.

But, with today’s’ lifestyles of poor protective compounds from foods, pro inflammatory diets and toxin/heavy metal exposure every time we turn around, the likelihood that the mitochondria cannot keep up is high.  These free radicals can damage the DNA of the mitochondria and, since the mitochondria don’t have very good repair mechanism, the mitochondria can no longer function and dies.  This process, occurring over time, can kill the mitochondria and the energy that the cell needs to survive.
