BONE QUALITY IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN BONE DENSITY – (12-15-04)

October 14, 2012 by James Bogash

BONE FRAGILITY AND COLLAGEN CROSS-LINKS

So much attention over the years has been focused on purely bone density without any thought to the quality of the bone present.

This research has started to surface, and it’s not very pretty. The fragility (and therefore the quality) of the bone is a very important factor in whether or not a bone is going to fracture. The quality of a bone is much more than just stopping the bone’s breakdown (via biphosphonate therapy like Fosamax) and needs to involve a wide spectrum approach including more of a plant-based/alkaline diet, high quality calcium as well as the numberable micronutrients needed for health bone. This also lends much credance to check the urine for the breakdown products of bone–a urine test that has been commercially available for many years now.

SUPPLEMENT CALCIUM AND VITAMIN D3 TO PREVENT FRACTURES – (05-23-05)

April 22, 2012 by James Bogash

Calcium and cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) for prevention of fractures

Doesn’t this appear to fly in the face of what “they” tell us?  If you read the above article, and if you realized that osteoporosis is a disease of lifestyle that will not be fixed with only one or two approaches, than the above article should come as no surprise.

Osteoporosis prevention/treatment needs to consist of a plant based diet (to achieve an alkaline balance rather than acid balance), supplements to include adequate vit D (see above!) and calcium (along with a good bone support formula to contain micronutrients such as molybdenum, strontium, magnesium…) and weight bearing exercise.

Regular readers will of course, not be surprised that I left out dairy.  Which is ironic, because that would probably be the first thing most people would list as was to prevent osteoporosis.  Remember that the literature is weak, and any studies showing a positive effect have usually not adjusted for Vit D intake, and that dairy, as we know it today, is fraught with many negative health consequences.

ADEQUATE SUPPLY OF MICRONUTRIENTS NEEDED FOR ORGANISM FUNCTIONING – (07-09-07)

April 6, 2012 by James Bogash

Low Micronutrient Intake May Accelerate the Degenerative Diseases of Aging Through Allocation of Scarce Micronutrients by Triage

I would have to admit that through government mandating fortification of foods that we do okay on some of the basic stuff. Calcium, folic acid, vitamin C (at least enough to prevent scurvy), thiamine…. But it ends there. Our food is so processed that the redox potential of phytonutrients and many micronutrients are gone. This leaves our diet sufficient to keep us alive for a few years, but woefully prepared for a lifetime of health.

So, basically, one theory purports that, in the absence of an adequate supply of micronutrients, the body will allocate these resources to functions that will keep us alive for today while NOT performing functions designed to keep the organism functioning at top capacity.
