This is a very important article to read for those of you living life with blinders on. The most disturbing news article appeared last Sunday in the AZ Republic as the front page story. The Valley of the Sun is experiencing a severe shortage of pharmacists. It was made out to be a serious situation. To me, the story was sickening to the effect that we as a population are not getting the message. Pharmaceuticals are dangerous. The drug companies control the research and many doctors are unwilling to report obvious side effects as what they are. You are a guinea pig each and every time you take a pharmaceutical drug. Maybe I’m just jealous that the nutriceutical company reps do not have $100K in their expense accounts (I am very appreciative of the occasional issue of Clinical Pearls…), but this concept bothers me. Despite everyone denying that it has an effect, studies show that it does. And drug companies would not do it if it didn’t work, plain and simple. This kind of relationship removes much of the objectiveness of the doctor. Pharmaceuticals should be the LAST place physicians get their information from, and yet, quite frequently for many busy doctors, it is the only place.

Requiring doctors to take part in continuing medical education doesn’t improve heart attack care

The bottom line that is probably at the heart of why research takes decades to reach clinical practice is that many physicians’ continuing education is sponsored by the drug companies. Every year there is a functional medicine symposium with some 20-odd experts in functional medicine. The cost is usually around $1000. I recently got an invite to a family practice symposium in CA with some 30+ speakers. The cost of this pharmaceutical sponsored symposium? $35 if you register early.

Ironically, most physicians themselves do not appear to be aware of this same influence… This article notes that between $8,000 and $13,000 is spent on each doctor annually for marketing.
